More Pictures!

Ok, sorry if you're bored, but I actually did have a request for more Africa pictures. So here goes.....

These are homes and businesses that were owned by Kikuyu tribe members who were in the post election violence riots. They were burned by members of the opposing tribes. The other two are pictures of a tented refugee camp for some who still don't have homes to return to.

This lady won a bicycle that we gave away at the conference. She hugged the bike, shouted and ran up & down the aisles singing, and just had a good old time over a bicycle. I sat there and wept as I remembered three nice cars sitting in my driveway at home!

Here are some typical western Kenya homes. Anything west of Nairobi gets progressively poorer. Some of our pastors live in the little "bomas" which are the round huts with the thatch roofs that I just love.

Do they have classes like we do. High, middle and low? From very rich to very poor. Are most of the people y'all minister to very poor?

They basically have very rich and very poor. The very rich are high governmental officials, which are notoriously corrupt and accept bribes for everything and then there are several British left over from the colonial days. There is quite a lot of wealth in Mombasa which is on the Indian Ocean side, but I've never been there. It's predominantly Muslim.

If you go west from Nairobi, most of our churches are located between there and Uganda, but we have four in the Sudan desert region of Kenya and several across the border in Uganda. All of our pastors are very poor, except one who is in the Sudan region. He is a school counselor and she is a teacher, but compared to the U.S., they are still very poor. A teacher may make $35 a month or so. The average yearly income in Kenya is about $300 and the prices are so high right now because of all the violence that took place. There's a real food shortage so the prices are horrible. Honestly I don't know how they survive.

Do those houses make you homesick for Africa?

They sing worship songs all in the key of G flat, which I haven't quite figured out yet. Maybe that's the only key those guys knew how to play in. I never could master G flat!!

The last two times we went they were always singing this song about "Jesus is a Weener" and we couldn't figure it out until we realized they were saying "winner". We kept waiting to hear that song this year and no one sang it the whole time! But they did do this song over and over and over and over......it just said, "Ni wewe, Bwana" hundreds of times. (pronounced "nee way way bwahna"). It means "It's only You, Lord" but they sang it so many times, just that one line. I keep hearing it over and over in my head and it won't go away! LOL!

There is no experience quite like a trip to Africa. I intend on going over to do a conference with my parents within the next year. I love the pics of the countryside and the services. God bless you all for the sacrifices you are making. I guess Eddie is a testament to the fact that missions can be a lifelong calling.

Well, actually if either of us has a "calling" to missions, it would be me. He feels like he did his time. LOL! He does not enjoy going, but he does enjoy teaching the pastors once we get there. I love the people, the shops, the food, the land, the smells, everything. It's very sad to me when I have to leave to come back here, even though I love our church and home here too.

I know Eddie's dad would be proud of him. He goes even if he doesn't really want to in his carnal nature.

Thanks for the pics. These are good to remind us of how much we really have in America.

My wife and I sit and wonder how to get out of debt so we can come up with $4000 to put hardword floors in part of our house when our garage is more than most of those people have to live in.

Yeah, going over there really puts things in perspective. I don't even want to shop when I come home (and that's a miracle in itself)!:heeheehee

I do love the pictures Sherri. The little girls in their dresses are so precious. It touches my heart that all they want to sing about is only Jesus. Praise the Lord for the pastors there that struggle every day.

I hate the way they shave the little girls' heads just like the boys. The only way I can tell them apart is by what they're wearing. It's because they're in the public schools and they do it to keep down the bug population. I think the ones in private schools don't have to do it, but very few kids are fortunate enough to go to those.

Oh that is sad, but understandable. I still think they are all so adorable.

They LOVE to have their pictures made! Those little dancer girls in the service danced forever and they are so limber and they just don't wear out! I wanted to get out there and join them so bad, but Eddie would have disowned me. LOL!

That's awesome!!! I assume she'll have an interpreter for Swahili - or do they all understand English? Be sure to tell her to take pictures!

That is amazing how blessed they are to receive a bicycle!
It really puts a lot of things into perspective.

A lot that are first shall be last & vice versa.

The other thread was just called "A Few Kenya Pictures" or something like that.

The conference was for our 28 pastors in Kenya/Uganda plus about 150+ other pastors/wives who came. Eddie taught eight sessions on "Blessings and Cursings" covering everything from the power of the spoken word to the curses of witchcraft. It was powerful! Many people were set free and the pastors were all excited and renewed. I love those African pastors! This is our third time to go and teach, but we have other pastors who have been before we ever started going three years ago.
