The Spirit of Fear

Have you ever dealt with a spirit of fear?

Last night, I was having a hard time. After going to bed quite late, as I was drifting off to sleep, I kept having strange 'visions' (they weren't dreams yet, just things that go on in your mind as you drift off) of scenes like, waking up to someone slashing my throat, someone killing my kids, and things like that.

I tossed and turned for a few minutes, trying to get those things out of my head and thinking of better things....

And I hear a noise in my living room. Sounds like someone opened a screen.

I jump up, heart pounding, and listen. Nothing. I turn the hall light on and peek in the living room. I have a cat who, if someone was there, would have ran for cover, but there he is, just looking at me.:crazy

Ok. So I go back to bed. I am laying there, trying to calm down when I hear a man's voice talking low. It's almost like a TV or radio is on. I have a fan in my bedroom window to help drown out background sounds, as I have cats who like to play all night, but they can't talk. Not like that.

Again, I get up and there's nothing going on. I live sorta in the country so there isn't anyone walking around outside or anything. There aren't even cars driving down the street. My kids are both sleeping and no radios or TV are on. I'd turned the living room TV off when I went to bed.

I laid back down and several times my eyes just popped open, believing that I was hearing things. I didn't get back up, but considered not going to sleep at all until this morning. I finally did go to sleep somewhere about 2:30am.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Not long ago, I was just getting to sleep when I 'felt' a presence in my bedroom. I didn't open my eyes because I was afraid of what I'd see, but I could feel it. I also felt my blanket moving as if someone was taking it off me, and at that point, I opened my eyes.

Nothing. My blanket wasn't moved and nobody was there. But I wasn't dreaming. I was fully aware of what was going on.

As I finally drifted off, I kept repeating the verse about God not giving us the spirit of fear, and that fear is not of God. I silently rebuked that spirit, perhaps the reason why I finally went to sleep. And I had a restful sleep, albeit a short one.

How does one deal with this, and has anyone ever dealt with this on a long-term basis? I can deal with a lot of things, but being scared isn't something I take very well.

I have had fear but not quite like that, did have a fear of going to sleep at night after my daughter died. You are under a lot of stress with all that is going on in your life. Will be praying for you.

Re: The Spirit of Fear

This does seem like a stress related situation to me.

I have gone through some similar stuff in the past few months. We also have a "fearless wonder" of a dog who is anything but, and if HE is sleeping well then I know it is all in my head. :)

I hope it's just stress and not that I'm under spiritual attack. I don't need anything else going wrong in my life!

H1, I really believe this is probably all stress related. You've certainly had more than your share of it lately! I would strongly suggest to you that you might want to contact your doctor to see if he can give you something to help you get thru this time. There is no shame in needing to take something to help at times like this. When Walt had the aneurism, my friend called my doctor and told him all that was happening. He sent me out a scrip for medicine to help me. I took 2 doses. That's all it took, but those 2 doses were huge for me.

I can agree with this, but I also don't want to ignore anything spiritual that might be going on as well. This is just really weird for me.

Yes...I can relate with you sister.
I really don't have a great explaination for it other than ...It's just a test"...

When these things happen, it's a perfect opportunity to excersise our faith muscle.

One time , while everything is going along just fine, I had a dream that a truck came down the road and struck my son. This happened twice. Each time I prayed and rebuked this. I prayed a prayer of safety over my son.
I prayed until I had peace about this.

It's not unusual to have these crazy things happen. If the enemy can get to us and wear down our faith, he's got us. And he starts with our mind. That's what he does.

Greater is he who is in you that he that is in the world.

I'd take some oil and go through my home and annoint every door post and every window and ask and trust Jesus to take care of the rest. My husband and I awhile back did something like that in our home. :)

From time to time I am stll bothered with those kinds of dreams where you are awake, but not awake....you know what I'm talkin bout. The last I had was of these little gremlin like critters jumpin into my bed. They were actually biting me...I could feel it...nothing really bad...justmore like aggravating pests. In this "vision" I finally grabbed one by the neck and was literally choking it to death and saying "IN THE NAME OF JESUS" you have no power over me!! :) I came "awake" speaking in tongues.

Satan is "like" a roaring lion seeking whom he "may" devour. I refuse to give him permission to eat at my soul......My Jesus has ALL power!!! Praise His Holy NAME!!!! :)

A friend of mine gave me that same advice this morning. Not sure if I'll anoint it with oil (woodwork and all), but prayer is a definite!

Another thing my mamma taught me and I've since taught it to my own children is to take the Bible and put it under your pillow while you sleep.

I know, it sounds really corny, but it works!

And the anointing of the house all the way thru is something I'd recommend too! Who knows what went on in the house prior to you living there (unless you know the previous owner...lol)!

Sending up prayers for you today!

I too recommend this....there is much comfort knowing that the word of God is near by. Also...just praying and calling on the name of Jesus will be great peace to mind so that you may get your much needed rest.

I too have gone through something similiar. It went on for days. I tried not to read too much into it....but put into perspective that there are spirits that are at work. During this time I just kicked up a notch my bible reading and prayer....just to let him know that I am not an easy prey. And calling on the name of Jesus...I would always find peace.

This helped me....:o

Re: The Spirit of Fear

What you described, especially feeling the presence in your room, reminded me of attacks that I had experienced in my past. Praying and annointing each room of your house would be a good start to prevent such attacks from reoccuring.

Another thing to remember, having a spirit of fear is being in contrast to having a sound mind.

"For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." 2 Timothy 1:7, KJV

When we lose control over our own spirit, when we lose control of our mind, when we fail to bring every thought into captivity in obedience to Christ, we are in effect defenseless, just like a city without walls.

"He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls." Proverbs 25:28, KJV

If there are no walls of defense up, if we have not put on the full armour of God and are not standing guard then we are more open to attack.

We have not received the spirit of fear, but the spirit of adoption by which we call, ABBA, Father. [ Paraphrased]

Dear Lord, Send your angels to bind the spirit of fear that is trying to overtake our sister. She is your child by adoption and I ask that you let your peace sweep through her heart, soul, and mind as she sleeps...Proverbs states that her sleep will be sweet...We believe and trust you Jesus.

Thank you ABBA

Thanks, everyone.

I had a good time at church tonight. We went out to all the schools and prayed over them for about an hour. I feel really good and know I'll be alright tonight.

Re: The Spirit of Fear

Heavenly One-

I'm praying for you. I agree with the brother who said this is probably caused by stress. Has there been alot of changes in you life recently? Job, moving. Use to the city, but now in the country? (Its amazing how accustom we can get to city noise, and how scarry the quiet in the country can be). New and unfamiliar surroundings. All of these things give us stress and can lead to "strange" things happening. Just find what works to give you peace, annointing the house, sleeping with the Bible under your pillow. Nothing strange or "corny" about it. Just do what gives you peace.

Could be spiritual attack but I doubt it.

Re: The Spirit of Fear

sister, my wife has had the exact same thing happen to her from time to time. The best thing is to get up and read your bible and pray. Also actually sometimes we just get out of bed and calm down, even by watching TV. The attack is more mental than spiritual. Not to say that there is not a spiritual influence, but more specifically it is an attack from the devil or demonic spirits against your mind, not actually against your soul or body. The mind is the gate to the soul. Fight the battle, you can win. Fasting is extremely effective against this type of spirit, and prayer. I think sometimes this kind of thing God allows to actually draw us closer to him. Rememmber the devil cannot touch you or your family unless God allows. My wife has experienced the very same things you describe, everything. But be strong in your faith and God will take care of it all. Also, don't let the devil cause doubt, encourage yourself in that even as the evil spirits literally exist, that is direct proof of a living God and heavenly angels that are on your side. Be encouraged, remember the devil doesn't have any power beyond threats and fear, it is all bark, but no bite. Encourage yourself knowing that God ultimately controls everything in your life and your childrens life.

Hope this helps, Bro. jason

OA and Jason, thanks for much for your kindness and your advice. I'm heading to bed soon and feel really good, as well as really tired (from lack of sleep last night!).

I believe all will be well. And I'm praying before bed.

This is no joke.... Watch some Three Stooges, or episodes of The Office, or anything like that! Anything to change the frame of mind. Once you become afraid, then everything becomes scary -like settling wood, or cars outside. The goal is to lighten up.

Thanks, Rhoni. I had a good sleep last night with no negative thoughts or feelings whatsoever. Never even crossed my mind.

But I wish I could have stayed in bed a little longer.....LOL!

I have dealt with those types of things before but usually, just the fact that my husband is in bed with me makes me go to sleep peacefully. Have you considered getting a dog? I think I would need one if I wasn't married. I'm not saying a dog is a replacement for a husband or anything like that. :ursofunny I can just see where someone might take this.

I'm getting a dog in a couple weeks. He's a very LARGE 2 yr old chocolate lab, and he's a good dog. I can't wait.

My cats, on the other hand, will probably all go into cardiac arrest......
