I'm Starting A Grant for Homeschooled Apostolics

I am considering starting an annual college grant for Homeschoolers.

I know, I know... we will consult an attorney etc., but I want some input from others - especially those with legal experience.

Can we write anything into the grant we want?

Like to be considered the student:

must have been Homeschooled for the past two years?

must be Oneness Pentecostal?

of the local church applicants given priority?

More questions...

Should I fund the account for several years and invest the funds before awarding the first grant?

Or simply fund and disperse as we go, realizing this will effect the groweth of the funds.

It would be nice if we could accumulate enough to have it fund it'self through groweth.

Would you consider awarding it to adults who are continuing their education through something similar to homeschooling? I believe it is called "cruiseschooling". It is a wonderful educational tool to learn about the ocean, nature, sand, and physiology. If so I would like to apply for my wife and myself.

Why not set up a 501 c3 non profit foundation that would allow others to contribute to the scholarship fund.....

Right. It most certainly it will be. For my own benefit and so others can give tax free.

This is in part why I am asking the questions concerning our discretion

I can't believe how many of you minimize and belittle the cruise/beach ministry. Shame on you!

If the grant was large enough I could guarantee you an Acts 2:38 door hanger put on the doorknob of every cabin on the ship!

Yeah and MOW promised us an Acts 2:38 tatoo on leg somewhere between the knee and the speedos!

Serious question: I know we have a few legal folk on here...

Since this will be non profit and for a good cause, even benefiting the church, is anyone out there qualified and willing to handle the legal work pro bono. I am sure we could work it as a tax break for value of the services rendered.

The moment you decided to do it you should have started accumulating funds. Ideally the grant money comes from dividends and interest off the capital, but that's not practical when you're just getting started and are committed to adding capital.

Yes, it's not practical for me to open it with $20,000 or $25,000 at this time. I do want to get the paperwork done so we can contribute. If we can't award the funds immediately then so be it. I am commited for long-term funding, Lord willing.

Yes it is pricey... I think Kristin got the commuter version this year.

Thank you to those who responded by PM.

Next question...

If this happens we will need a name for the foundation.

I am likely going to provide the primary funding - at least initially. However, I am not fond of using any part of my name. I have considered using a cute name of some sort - incorporating a word like "cinder" "ashes" or "soot" but I think that would limit the appeal of the foundation when soliciting funds. We want the broadest appeal possible, with hopes of giving away tens of thousands of dollars or even more, in the future.

Any suggestions?

Steve

Enjoying these comments! As I said - I really want this to become bigger than the Steve Hoover and want to be able to appeal for funds from all others. I don't want it to sound like a foundation for my trade.

PS I have this slogan beneath our company name, "Everything Your Hearth Desires"

Oh boy, I paid for those ABeka videos and then DVD's for many many years! It was $1,000 per year back then; not sure how much it's gone up.

For the record, becoming a 501c non-profit requires tons of paperwork! I know....we filed for 501C status for our Competition!

Good luck! :)

Re: I'm Starting A Grant for Homeschooled Apostoli

We had to go through that 501C-3 paperwork too, for each church and for the ministry covering. It is a pain, but we got a professional to help us - a guy in Ohio. That's part of what his company does for churches. I'm not sure if he works with other para-church organizations or not. Steven, if you would like to talk to him, let me know.

Seeing these comments and knowing you are from the same state, I question whether the level of difficulty varies from state to state. I am somewhat familiar with several 501C3 orgs in MO and have not heard that it is tough to acheive.

I have a legal advisor working on this (investigating) pro bono and I'll let you know what we discover.

Thanks!

Re: I'm Starting A Grant for Homeschooled Apostoli

I have filed said paperwork before. It is a lot of work but its worth it for a worthy cause.
Without it, your always suspicious in the IRS eyes. Not fun. Status keeps you on the up and up in their eyes....just food for thought!

Right. Also, we must have it to allow those contributing to take a tax deduction.

Couple of questions.

1. Are you going to have a panel to decide who wins the grant?

2. Are you planning on having a qualification requirments?

Such as: Grade, community involvment, etc.???

I think this is a great idea.

As to a universal name, I will think on it. :)

Some thoughts:

"Education from Home Grant"

"Christian Homeschoolers Grant"

"Apostolic Education Grant"

"Apostolic Homeschoolers Grant"

"Hearth to College Grant"

There will be a panel or board, of which I will be Chairman or Administrator or Facilitator - whatever it's called.

The first and primary qualification will be a Homeschooled, Oneness Pentecostal student. (the board will have the ability to make exceptions)

The application will also provide for information as you noted, and their aspirations for a college education and their career orientation.
