CC1's Wife Overdosed By Pharmacy Mistake

I have not been on AFF hardly any the last week or so due to a variety of things including a business trip, crazy work weeks, computer issue, etc.

The last month has been so crazy with emergency surgeries, cars totaled in car wrecks, etc for my family that I didn't think anything else weird or bad could happen but it has.

My wife is on a medication for RLS (restless leg syndrome) that we get through the mail in 90 day supplies. Her latest refill was late in coming so her doctor called in a precription of just a few pills to a local large chain pharmacy we use to tide her over.

The precription was just four or five pills in a small box like you would buy cold medicene in at the store with the pharmacy's label covering the entire one side of the box. The label showed the medication, dosage, my wifes name etc.

Because she had been out of the medicene for a couple of days and she can take either one or two pills of it she took two to try and get some rest. Strangely the opposte occurred. She could not sleep at all that night and felt really bad.

The next day she was going to take another pill when she happened to turn the box over and saw the product info printed on the back of the box and saw a medicene name she did not recognize. She looked closely and realized that the pharmacy had dispensed the wrong medicene. The label was correct but the actual pills were not.

Unfortunetely the pharmacy gave my wife a very strong medication totally unrelated to her condition. This medicene is prescribed in varying strengths and the one they accidently gave my wife was the strongest prescrbed by 14
times the weakest dosage. One pill is supposed to have been taken once a week and she took 2 pills.

This medicene has complications for persons with esophegal or gastric problems and she suffers from acid reflux and esophagus problems already. Over doses can cause stomach and esophegal ulcers among other things.

She called the pharmacy and they freaked out. They called her doctor and had her come in and get some paperwork, swap out the medicene for the right stuff, etc.

The wrongly prescribed medicene is time released so the complications of no sleep, aches in her muscles, esophagus and stomach hurting ,etc all ease up then get bad again as more is released into her system.

She went to the doctor yesterday and she has an irregular hearbeat now. They sent her home with a heart monitor attached to record it then tomorrow she has tests done on her heart and a gastro Dr. is working her in today or tomorrow to check out her esophagus.

We should have known there was potential for bad and long lasting side effects when the day after we discovered what happened and called the pharmacy somonene from their HQ called and tried to offer my wife $1500 to settle for the mistake. I have a feeling she will be spending a lot more $$$$ than that on the health issues this has caused.

My big concern is my wifes short term and long term health. She has had many medical issues and new ones is absolutely something she does not need. Please help me pray for her that she will recover fully.

My gracious!

Praying here and thank the Lord that nothing terrible happened on the onset.

Hang in there for a good settlement!

Praying CC1. Was it CVS? My physician has a note posted that they make the most mistakes in medications and he recommends other pharmacies.

I think that you're going to have a great vacation.....:whistle

Actually, as a healthcare worker, I think you should really think about the best way to really teach them a lesson. This is completely negligent and I'm sure you folks are not the only one's that this has happened to. Their policies and procedures need to be examined they really need someone to blow a whistle.

WOW! It could have been much worse if the med was dispensed in a prescription bottle and the name of the read pills inside the bottle were no where to be found by your wife!

Praying for her that the effects will not cause any long lasting problems and that she recovers completely.

My BIL had a similiar situation with Walmart tranfering his prescription to another Walmart. He is a severe diabetic and the medicine they gave him was NOT for diabetics with a side affect of kidney problems which he later developed.

Don't settle to quickly until you know the long term affects she may have.

I am very thankful that she read the label before taking anymore.

Praying for her a complete recovery, in Jesus name!

Man, CC1! When it rains it pours!! I will be praying for you guys.

I'm sure you know not to settle with the payment. I would wait this thing out and see what happens and sign nothing.

Isn't there anything they can do to flush her system?? Maybe you should really push this and not just let the dr's take the wait and see approach.

Exactly. I told that to my wife this morning. If it had just been pills in a bottle she would have taken another two the next day and would probably be dead or in very bad shape.

No. It was the pharmacy department of a major retailer I don't want to name.
They probably have the strongest legal department of any retailer and the deepest pockets. I imagine they are used to playing hardball because every scam / con artist in the world probably tries to get their money.

However we do not have a history of being litigious. In fact we have NEVER sued anybody for anything. My big concern is that if there are any long term health issues because of this that the expense of that be taken care of and also they take into account the tremendous pain and suffering my wife is going through.

Once we get the analysis of her irregular hearbeat, the results of the effects on her esophagus, stomach, etc (re ulcers, etc) I will probably get legal representation on how to proceed.

Brother,

When she is over the complications, Lord willing, RLS can be totally cured by taking calcium.

Most women need it anyway.

God bless her with total recovery,
Nina

Re: CC1's Wife Overdosed By Pharmacy Mistake

CC1 - I would absolutely do that!

You aren't looking to get rich off this, but just compensated for the expense, damage and suffering she is having to endur because of their neglect.

Nothing wrong in doing that.

I hope it's not Walmart!

I had a client that was shopping at a Walmart store, when he walked BEHIND a truck that had been unloading. The truck suddenly backed up and ran over him almost killing him. His leg was so mangled that he would never walk again.

He filed a lawsuit against Walmart, but they successfully delayed any judgment for several years. Out of frustration to pay medical bills that had piled up, they finally settled for a whole lot less.

He died about six months ago from his complications. He was 45 years old!

Walmart has the money to wait you out until you'll probably never see any money! It's really sad!

Good heavens!, my heart is just broken, it was a pleasure meeting your wife, she is a very special person.

I agree with Dave, you should throw the hammer down. I wouldn't let them gloss over this for $1,500.

I think this individual, God bless his family, made a mistake. He should have gone to the media.

I would start calling all of them just to get one or two interested in the story. I would want to know this information for my family especially considering, not the fact they are big business, but the fact they made an insulting offer equating your wife's condition with their mistake at $1,500.
