People In Hurricane Ike's Path

Pray for those in the path of Hurricane Ike.

PO, Esther, AG, & Steadfast.
Steadfast & his Church have not fully recovered from Rita & are praying to be spared this time round.

Anyone else that you know of beside a few million?

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

The storm has been tracking farther NE and the eye of the storm should be around Treasure Island in Galveston County.

They are expecting a 20 foot storm surge, which will destroy anything it its path. Please pray for all those coastal residents, because many will lose everything in this storm.

I know that it is a very real possibility... but we can pray that this one doesnt do much and God can too grant this... Just like they thought it would destroy NO when Gustav hit... and it did no damage at all there... I place my trust in HIM!!!

Praying. Having just survived the damages of Gustav, I am really praying! I have got friends in Orange, TX that will probably ride this one out.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

Guys, I wouldn't take this storm lightly.

Here is the local advisory from the National Hurricane Center.

I admit I've never seen this type of language in a NHC advisory before.

http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/WTUS84-KHGX.shtml

MAXIMUM WATER LEVELS FORECAST:

GULF-FACING COASTLINE WEST OF SARGENT...5 TO 8 FEET

SHORELINE OF MATAGORDA BAY...5 TO 8 FEET

GULF-FACING COASTLINE SARGENT TO HIGH ISLAND
INCLUDING GALVESTON ISLAND......12 TO 16 FEET

SHORELINE OF GALVESTON BAY...15 TO 22 FEET

LIFE THREATENING INUNDATION LIKELY!

ALL NEIGHBORHOODS...AND POSSIBLY ENTIRE COASTAL COMMUNITIES...
WILL BE INUNDATED DURING THE PERIOD OF PEAK STORM TIDE. PERSONS
NOT HEEDING EVACUATION ORDERS IN SINGLE FAMILY ONE OR TWO STORY
HOMES WILL FACE CERTAIN DEATH. MANY RESIDENCES OF AVERAGE
CONSTRUCTION DIRECTLY ON THE COAST WILL BE DESTROYED. WIDESPREAD
AND DEVASTATING PERSONAL PROPERTY DAMAGE IS LIKELY ELSEWHERE.
VEHICLES LEFT BEHIND WILL LIKELY BE SWEPT AWAY. NUMEROUS ROADS
WILL BE SWAMPED...SOME MAY BE WASHED AWAY BY THE WATER. ENTIRE
FLOOD PRONE COASTAL COMMUNITIES WILL BE CUTOFF. WATER LEVELS MAY
EXCEED 9 FEET FOR MORE THAN A MILE INLAND. COASTAL RESIDENTS IN
MULTI-STORY FACILITIES RISK BEING CUTOFF. CONDITIONS WILL BE
WORSENED BY BATTERING WAVES. SUCH WAVES WILL EXACERBATE PROPERTY
DAMAGE...WITH MASSIVE DESTRUCTION OF HOMES...INCLUDING THOSE OF
BLOCK CONSTRUCTION. DAMAGE FROM BEACH EROSION COULD TAKE YEARS TO
REPAIR.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

They used similar language in the advisory for New Orleans for Katrina. I agree this is a serious storm and everyone needs to be very cautious.

Again, I have bedrooms to spare. If y'all change your mind, please, please know you can head to Austin and have a place to stay. I'm sure I can round up more rooms if more people show up than I have space for.

Well Tim the wheels are off the double wide, and I am not sure the Honda could pull it anyway so I guess we'll just stick it out...

My Mom and I were called to pull an all nighter at Cambell Center, our district enclosed arena, when the county decided to use it as an emergency shelter for those who are diabled. I had gotten off work at 6:30, and then was called in at 8:30 to work until 6:00AM this morning. We both got up just a minute ago, that we must check our individual schools before 6:00PM Saturday and again before 12:00PM Sunday.

This storm is a major monster.

All of Houston owes emergency personnel and state and city workers like you and Mama Price a great debt of gratitude.

Good to see you posting knucklehead.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

I am barely here. The storm is destroying lives, even before it comes upon land. The roads in Galveston are starting to receive water. I am tired now, but at least our home is hurricane ready, as best we can, before the call.

I am getting ready for my first cup of joe after waking up, like my third in total since midnight. This thing makes you think, makes you pray, and makes you search yourself.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

I am afraid some folk are going to see that this is "just" a catagory 2 storm and think they can ride it out, but due to its size, the experts are saying the surge could be as high as a cat 4 or worse.

Also there will likely be a lot more tornados because of the size of the thing.

After Gustav being considered a dud by a lot of those in its path, people seem to be less serious about this one.

we have such short attention spans.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

This is a post from an LSU message board keeping close track of the storm. Several meteorologists have been posting.

Now please note: This is not anything "official" from the National Hurricane Center - this is just a guy posting but again - this is not a storm to take lightly.

And yes, the "category" is really meaningless as far as assessing how dangerous Ike is.

Quote:

Galveston is done. The water is topping the 17 foot sea wall. The storm surge has not really even gotten started yet. Then pack 10ft+ waves on top of the potential 20 foot storm surge and it is going to be catastrophic. Not might, will be. I cannot believe people are staying. The Cat2 two rating is SO misleading it is almost a joke with this storm. When it is all said and done with this storm a lesson of relying on the Cat system is going to be scrutinized heavily (and critically I believe) and is going to have to be supplemented going forward so people get the picture.

Re: People In Hurricane Ike's Path

I heard this morning that this storm is 70% LARGER than Katrina!

It is something like 500 miles accross!

I have a friend 25 miles from galveston... she says they are boarded up and are staying.

True, best case scenario under present circumstances, entire island underwater for several hours.

I just read where a bunch of people at a bar called the "Poop Deck" are staying in Galveston to ride out the storm together, while they party.

They say in Tyler we're going to still see Cat 1 levels, too, that's more than anyone around here is ready for. Also, pray for us, they're housing evacuees about 2 blocks from us in an old walmart, and the sirens haven't stopped...seen some shady looking characters walking up and down our street.

Check out these photos of hurricanes from space! I was just looking at them and suddenly understood that what you're seeing is water in the ocean being swirled. That's not just wind - it's the effect of the wind! Amazing!

Right now the only loss of life that Fox News is showing is a 16 year old boy who was drowned in his home. It didn't say the circumstances behind it.

Please pray for those there without water and power; I know this is the case with JimGriffin & his family.
