Gospel Today
Gospel Today magazine, published in Fayetteville. LIVING
Latest Headlines:
Gospel Today, the Fayetteville-published magazine, was pulled off the racks by the bookstores owner, the Southern Baptist Convention. The problem? The five smiling women on the cover are women of the cloth — church pastors.
Southern Baptist polity says that’s a role reserved for men.

Teresa Hairston, owner of Gospel Today, whose glossy pages feature upbeat articles about health, living, music and ministry, said she discovered by e-mail that the September/October issue of the magazine had been demoted to the realm of the risque.

“It’s really kind of sad when you have people like [Gov.] Sarah Palin and [Sen.] Hillary Clinton providing encouragement and being role models for women around the world that we have such a divergent opinion about women who are able to be leaders in the church,” Hairston said. “I was pretty shocked.”

Chris Turner, a spokesman for Lifeway Resources, which runs the stores for the Southern Baptist Convention, said, “It is contrary to what we believe.”

It bases those beliefs on their interpretation of New Testament Scriptures.

Southern Baptist representatives at national meetings have adopted statements saying women should not be pastors, but each church is independent. A few churches have selected women, such as Decatur First Baptist, where the Rev. Julie Pennington-Russell preaches each Sunday from the pulpit.

Pastor Tamara Bennett of California is one of the featured pastors on the magazine cover and talks in the article about the challenges of breaking through the stained-glass ceiling.

“God’s assignment is that no souls are lost and all are saved,” Bennett said. “Gender is not how God sees it. We are about winning souls, period.”

Southern Baptists are not the only ones to frown on women preachers. Catholics, the largest Christian denomination in the nation, do not allow women priests. And some conservative evangelical groups, such as the Presbyterian Church in America, do not ordain women.

“We weren’t trying to pick a fight,” Hairston said. “We just did a story on an emerging trend in a lot of churches.”

I don't think this is petty.

I agree with Lifeway's actions. I will go out of my way to purchase something from them because of their stand on this issue.

I don't think it is God's will for women to be Pastors.

The Bible says
1 Corinthians 14
34Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law.
35And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.

So you should not attend, associate, or believe any church that allows a woman to teach or sing either. Nothing verbal from the ladies in church please. It is forbidden not just by Paul in his teachings, who said these things were the command of the Lord but also by the law. So it is not the will of God for women to pastor, preach, teach, sing, speak.... NOTHING from the ladies in church. And anyone who associates with churches who do so are a shame also.

:whistle

Well if yours are raised it is time to sit quietly in church and to teach the younger women.
Titus 2
3The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
5To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Speak up and be blasphemous.

Oh, but you can have some wine, just not a lot of it.

The following contains some good teaching against women preachers.

For all who are truly sincere seekers of the truth concerning this subject, I suggest you give it a read:

That was my grandmother and my mother and is how mine is going also. My mom had a brother who was white as snow by the time he came home from WWII. He had a full head of dark hair when he left for the war and came back with a full head of white hair. His nickname was Whitey. I wish mine would get it over with.

No, I wouldn't say that.

My pastor has been a UPC pastor in the same church for over 30 years, a UPC District Super for most of those 30 years, probably still has a valid UPC license until it runs out, and is now with the WPF. Being a UPC District Super. for around 30 years apparently made him the second longest still-living member of the Board before he resigned.

I don't know much about Reckhart other than it looks like he's apostolic with kind of a Jewish slant.

I just use references to his bible studies that I agree with seeing I can't find any UPC online bible studies concerning certain things.

So again, no, I wouldn't consider myself a Reckhart disciple.

Ok, thanks for the clarification. However, we're defined by our associates and the teaching we espouse, so you can understand my confusion.

I understand, but like I said, I don't know much about him, but just use his resources on the web for lack of those same materials elsewhere. I'm not part of his organization; I was born again under a UPC pastor who is now WPF.
