I've Lost 18% of my retirement this week!!!

Due to the current financial crisis on Wall Street, I looked at my retirement account, as of today I have lost about 18% of it's value this week alone. I am glad that my retirement horizon is far off and have a longer time period to recover.

But I feel sorry for those that are currently seeking to retire or will so soon.

No wonder people are guiled into voting for Obama.

Mine is up a little.

I bailed out of the market over 6 months ago.

I hope there is a time of recovery for you... or bare minimum... this is the end of your losses...

My confidence is not high for either though.

Re: I've Lost 18% of my retirement this week!!!

truth is long term this may be just a bump in the road, but the most important thing is to have a diversified portfolio, that mirrors the risk you are willing to take on my friend, dt

I'm not even looking at mine.

The only good news about this situation is that at the end of each month, when I buy stocks, I get quite a few more for the same investment!

I have lost 20% but I am not worried. I got in at the top of the dot com bubble and I don't expect this "crisis" to be any worse.

dollar cost averaging into the market right now will make up those losses.

That is what I told a co-worker in my office, at least now, I can buy more of the shares at a lower price.

I really do feel sorry for older workers who want to retire and just saw a whole lot of money go bye bye!

Right! But my company match went in a couple of months ago. I would think that right now would be a good time to make the year end IRA or 401K contributions.

I have a 403(b) and we can only purchase through one company. American Funds, thank God they have no relation to AIG, but according to my broker, they are well run, and highly capitalized, but I imagine they all say that. They only thing I don't like is that it is front loaded.

But hard not take advantage of tax savings of automatic withdrawl of my paycheck.

These loses are a killer. hard for me to make up a 2.5 million loss.

I mean if I had that much to lose. LOL

funny truthseeker, i can tell you that if people lose just a few thousand, some of them never get over it, they just dont have the stomach for loss, and dont need to be in the market, dt

Re: I've Lost 18% of my retirement this week!!!

I got brave and took a peek at mine yesterday and it was painful. I realize the best thing to do is just sit tight, but I need to diversify some - I have too high a percent in company stock.

I just hate trying to decide what to change it to - low risk - high risk, bonds, international stock, etc. right now.

older workers should have been adjusting thier portfolio before they got older.

I know that isnt the nice way to put it, but really there is a forumla that everyone needs to reveiew annually.

Yep, I have 27% in company stock and need to reduce that to around 10%.

One unforeseen blessing is I exercised some stock options a couple months ago at 56 and our stock is 45 today.

Actually, I do appreciate the insight that some of the more "mature" :) ones are giving. At my age, I am still trying to become better versed in some of these things and I really appreciate the conversation and the transparency here.

Re: I've Lost 18% of my retirement this week!!!

I've lost about 25%. Normally, I wouldn't be overly worried about it, as I have 30+ years until retirement, and I also have a portion in CD IRA's that are safe from the market issues.

My biggest concern right now is that before all this happened we filed papers, whereby I agreed to give my soon-to-be-ex a portion of my 401(k). My biggest concern is that when the time comes there won't be enough left.

I hate to sell now and take such a big loss now, but if the balance drops below the amount I have to give, I have serious problems.

You should have agreed to a percentage instead of an amount.

you might want to check GE. I hear not good things.

might be wrong though....

I would be taking a really good look at the financial sector. many of these banks are in great shape or will be in a year or two but have taken a beating on their stocks.

What you're hearing is probably not wrong. The GE factory not far from here is cutting jobs.
