Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
THE ELDERS WERE RIGHT AGAIN !!!!
Blurb and link to rest of article below. CHICAGO – Groundbreaking research suggests that pregnancy rates are much higher among teens who watch a lot of TV with sexual dialogue and behavior than among those who have tamer viewing tastes. "Sex and the City," anyone? That was one of the shows used in the research. The new study is the first to link those viewing habits with teen pregnancy, said lead author Anita Chandra, a Rand Corp. behavioral scientist. Teens who watched the raciest shows were twice as likely to become pregnant over the next three years as those who watched few such programs. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081103/...teen_pregnancy |
Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
Really...
Did the elders teach that, when watching TV, to not watch shows with sexual content on them? I don't think so. That would be teaching personal responsibilities and morals in ones every day actions. The elders taught a method that suggested that people did not have within themselves the ability to judge between what is acceptable content and what is not. This study suggests that a certain type of show tends to bring about this type of behavior. I think that it is fair to say that nearly everyone teaches that we should be wary of the content of the shows that are on TV and adjust our viewing habits accorndingly |

Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
There's probably a higher rate of teen pregnancies among teens who read racy books also, and teens who frequent inappropriate chat rooms. It's not the medium, it's the content.

Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
This doesn't pertain to the "elders" bro. Any sincere christian know that watching(or intake of any kind) filth, will not benefit, but harm, them or their children.
Garbage in, Garbage out. You are what you eat, same principle. |

I wonder if reading Playboy would influence my opinions on sex more than reading Popular Mechanics... or should I just avoid all magazines just to be on the safe side?

Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
Garbage in, garbage out. I DO believe what we "feed" our minds will influence our behavior. It's one thing to be exposed to garbage in the secular world, but we should not deliberately surround ourselves with, read, watch or listen to trash.
Children are particularly susceptible to media, and responsible parents WILL supervise their child's environment. |

Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
The following is a post I made on a "content based or technology based filters" thread on another forum.
I believe it may apply here. __________________________________________________ ________ The biggest challenge right now is integrated technology, the only real filter is the Holy Ghost. The technology does not exist to filter cellphones. Therefore no fool proof way to keep it off your child's phone. It is predicted that porn by phone will go from virtually zero to multi-billion in a couple years. Furthermore things which most Apostolics would consider harmless. Hand held games. Some have the ability to go into wifi hotspots so the kids have the ability to challenge each other online. So what? Well, they also have built in I-Explorer which means once again unfiltered, unsupervised internet access. The only hope: quit preaching against technology and start preaching Christ, holiness, and inner braces. I have to agree with the premise it is now impossible to externally filter our kids, families and saints the way it was a few years ago. Then it was simply don't own a TV or go to the movies. Sorry won't work now. My youngest daughter is part of a pilot program all 1,500 students at her high school are REQUIRED to use school issued laptops. The parents were assured all filters were in place, the kids could not even get on MySpace. Took the kids about a week to figure out ways around them. I have spent A LOT of time with my daughters over the past few years in very frank and and candid discussions about what is out there, how to avoid it and why. Those who know me know I almost never post is this tone. But for this one to me there is no middle ground. Some will insist on staying Apostolic Amish. But the ONLY way to win this battle is to focus on inner braces more than external stimulus. |
Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
Along these lines, I believe the constant barrage of gays in sitcoms has made kids think it's just the norm. They are definately pushing the agenda.
Does it make more kids experiment with it - - probably so. There is no doubt that TV does influence people. I agree with James' post above as parents we have a lot of responsibility to protect our kids! |

And I agree with James' post as well. We MUST teach principles. It's imperative. Technology is part of life now. Saying no TV, no internet, etc. just won't cut it. Nor will it do anything to protect our kids. Teaching them how to make moral, godly, wise decisions WILL. |

I remember it going around my small town that an adult member who was reclusive was 'gay'. I remember it not being a good thing to claim to be a friend of his because that made you 'gay' too. It impacted me so much that although I never met the guy, I remember that his name was David Watson. It was a name that I associated with something disgusting. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that 25 years later, my kids would be exposed to gay children and it be thought of as normalcy, or that it would be seen as 'being cool' to 'be gay'. My son knows many boys as well as girls who are gay in school, and they aren't afraid to let it be known. Thankfully, my son isn't buying into that lifestyle. Neither is my daughter. They both think it's gross, and I agree. I shudder to think what will be acceptable in 25 years when my grandkids are in school. |

Re: Sexy TV shows tied to teen pregnacies
My mom really did stick a bar of soap in my mouth for saying the word "pregnant". Well sort of. She was cutting my hair and was talking to a neighbor about someone who was pregnant. I knew the woman they were talking about, and knew her mid-section was getting fat. So, to my young mind "pregnant"= "fat". A few minutes later my sister came walking in and I started chanting, "Margarets getting pregnant (fat)". Thats when the bar of soap made its way into my mouth.
