Re: Veterans Day

We call it Remembrance Day in Canada & it is a national Holiday.
90 years ago today the guns went silent of the first World war!

By: Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD (1872-1918),Canadian Army

IN FLANDERS FIELDS the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

Re: Veterans Day

The Veteran's Day parade was held at 11 am today as usual. Rain had been predicted but thank God it didn't happen. Once again I was blessed to see my dad marching with the WWII vets. We owe so much to the men and women who spent much of their youth in foreign lands fighting for what we in America often take for granted.

I also want to give my heartfelt thanks to all Veterans! I had/have many in my own family from past and present war. America should never take for granted such great sacrifices these brave men and women have made. God bless America!

My Father and grandfather served in the Navy in WWII. I appreciate all those who have served and given their lives for the freedom we enjoy every day.

God Bless America

This is a little video clip that is ten minutes that shows a little how Canadians honour our vets on Remembrance day.
We play the Last Post & there is a poem about "in the morning and at the going down of the sun we will remember them.

I have a lot of my family that was in both the Canadian Army & the Air Force.
One uncle saw battle in Europe during WW 2 & another uncle saw battle in Korea on the front lines.

My dad is a World War II veteran. I remember my mother singing me to sleep with those "War Songs"....Hey, I was not alive during the WWII, but Mom and Dad were married during those days.

This was one of my favorites...Mom could sing it much better than Vera Lynn.

My dad fought in Korea and Japan in the army in 1950-1952. He ended up getting to be the company clerk (like "Radar") and was pulled from the fighting because he was the only one in his company who had happened to take typing. I think he only took typing in high school because that's where most of the girls were. LOL!

It sounds as though he was probably a smart guy. Dad was in World War II, the Korean War and would have been sent to Vietnam if he had not gotten out (after almost 30 years of being in the military).

Please pray for my nephew. He left for Afghanistan today. He is in the Marines. He's already had a tour in Kuwait and Iraq.

Re: Veterans Day

Thank you really isn't enough.

But it's what I'll add to this thread.

My grandpa served in World War II. My uncle in Korea. My dad in Vietnam. My cousin in Operation Desert Storm. My brother now serves in the US Coast Guard.

The town I grew up in tops out at around 1000 people now. It was around 800 people the entire time I was growing up. But we attracted thousands of people from the surrounding area for our 4th of July celebration. I watched this tradition die out with my grandpa's generation. He's still living, but as he and his friends have aged (and yes, died), and my uncle and his friends as well, they were less and less able to plan and participate.

Memorial Day in my home was 2nd only to the 4th of July. Seriously, Christmas wasn't as big of a deal growing up as those two holidays.

My mom wouldn't let us participate in the Veteran's Day ceremonies, but I was very aware of them as a child and very, very proud of my family members for serving.

My uncle was part of the color guard for the VA for every ceremony all year long.

We stood at attention, we saluted the service men and women, past and present. We put our hands over our hearts. And I don't see this so much anymore. I really think we've lost something..so much really..in these younger generations.

We recently moved to Texas and I have seen something in the schools here that I haven't seen anywhere else since I was a young child. They say the pledge of allegiance to the flag every morning. My kids ask me why they have to do it, and I smile and tell them it's respect for all the people who have served in the military for our country. And I sit here crying while typing this because those people have faces in my mind and in my memory.

Take courage in knowing your nephew is courageously going to confront an enemy of peace that needs to be destroyed.

The U.S. Marines are a far more superior fighting force to the taliban. His training and experience has adequately prepared him to meet and overcome that threat.

You should be proud!
