Anyone know Foreign Languages?

Just curious who all on here speaks anything other than English. I had three years of French, and have lately been brushing up on it. I am getting ready to take a Spanish class at church really soon, as I know very little of it. I have taken a course in Swahili, and just recently bought the Rosetta Stone Swahili course, so I will get a little more indepth teaching with that. I love other cultures and languages! I think Americans are about the only ones on earth that only know one language!

I speak "fluent" Pennsylvania Dutch - a German dialect that evolved in and around William Penn's experiment and it's descendants. It was my first language.

That's awesome. You know my German grandparents said they spoke Dutch, which I never could figure out. Is it very similar to German? When they would get excited or angry, they would revert back to the "Mother language". I loved to listen to it, but never learned any of it.

Interesting. I am told... The natives in Pennsylvania asked the newcomers where they migrated from and were told they were "Deutsch" (or Germans) The language barrier did not work in their favor and the natives thought they meant "Dutch" - so even after the truth was known the immigrants were known as the "Pennsylvania Dutch".

Re: Anyone know Foreign Languages?

Wikpedia gives much more on the Pennsylvania Dutch http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsyl...erman_language
Including this...
"Only Amish and Old Order Mennonites, i.e., the plain people, are passing the language along to their children in the current generation, although they were originally minority groups within the Pennsylvania German speaking population. According to sociologist John A. Hostetler, fewer than 10 percent of the original Pennsylvania German population was Amish or Mennonite."

I had 3 years of Latin. I was taught some German too.

I used to speak Portuguese, daily, taught by my neighbors.

Learned some Japanese while stationed there.

Almost fluent in Pashto.

I pick up languages kind of quick, but I don't retain what I learn unless I use it regularly.

I took three years of Spanish.

I really should be able to speak French though. My grandmother and a number of other relatives speak fluent French. My mother understands most of it. But, alas, I was never priveleged.

I did the Pimsleur Swahili course ($99) and I learned basic phrases, but I can only say those things that are actually on the CD's, such as,...."I would like two beers please". LOL!

I just bought Rosetta Stone's computer course for Swahili, so we will see. Everyone says it's the best, but it's also over $200, so we will see if it's worth it.

I had a friend use it, and the system works well.

LOL, yes, it's from Star Wars, the original. When I was a kid, they played that movie on HBO like twice a day. My brother and I most likely know all the dialogue of the entire movie.

I'm kinda decent at Spanish. I read it better than I speak it though.

My bilingual Bible (King James/Reina Valera) has gone a long way toward helping me with my Spanish. I highly recommend a bilingual bible to anyone looking to learn or brush up on a foreign language.
