I did not listen to them. Those folks just look to worldly to me. I just hate it when people change the tune to our most sacred songs of faith.

I still feel the Holy Ghost goose bumps run up and down my spine when we soing that old Anthem, The great speckled bird.

Oh my gracious, how I do await that big old bird to fly in and carry me away to glory. Hallelujah !!!!

The first one is sung very professionally.
The second one is sung by an Irish family group. This was several years ago. Young Paddy gets all emotional when he does his part.
The third one, of course, was Elvis. Elvis was somewhat of an enigma with Pentecostal roots. People who worked with him said he was very courteous and overly generous. He loved Gospel music and there was an anointing on him as he sang it. In later years he became addicted to medication and needed uppers to get him going and then downers to bring him back.

I love that old song, The Great Speckled Bird. I have one CD which has 13 or 14 different versions of that one song on it.

There are different versions and words for that song.

This is pretty typical

Here's Roy Acuff doing a version that he was known for
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6PXk3JFKIAU

This one is pretty much the same
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNAmyElPAco

I couldn't find the one version where it says something like

they envy her glory and fame
they hate her because she is chosen
and has not denied His dear name
(or something like that)

Amazing Grace was not written to an original tune and I never heard anybody play it the way it was written. I would not like it if I did.
In my opinion Amazing Grace is the greatest song ever written and it is adaptable to a wide range of styles. The first one above sounds fabulous.

Did you know you can sing Amazing Grace to the tune of House of the Rising Sun and also to the tune of the Theme from Gilligan's Island?

Go ahead and try it.

I have heard that if you watch Elvis, it will make your leg shake. Therefore, I have abstained.

Re: Three versions of an old favorite

I found some words for Great Speckled Bird.
It's been around for some time and different folks sing it a little differently.

This is based on Jeremiah 12:9 from the KJV. Other versions have a different reading. Here is the KJV:
"Mine heritage is unto me as a speckled bird, the birds round about are against her;"

Great Speckled Bird

1.What a beautiful thought I am thinking
Concerning that great speckled bird
Remember her name is recorded
On the pages of God's Holy Word.

2. All the other birds are flocking 'round her
She is so despised by the squad
The great speckled bird in the Bible
Representing that great church of God.

3. I am glad I have learned of her meekness
I am proud that my name is on her book
For I want to be one never fearing
On the face of my Savior to look.

4. All the other churches are against her
They envy her glory and fame
They hate her because she is chosen
And has not denied Jesus' name.

5. Desiring to lower her standard
They watch every move that she makes
They long to find fault with her teachings
But really they find no mistake.

6. She is spreading her wings for a journey
She's going to take by and by
When the trumpet shall sound in the morning
She will rise and go up in the sky.

7. In the presence of all her despisers
With a song never uttered before
She will rise and be gone in a moment
Till the great tribulation is o'er.

8. When He cometh descending from heaven
On the clouds as He writes in His Word
I'll be joyfully carried to meet Him
On the wings of that great speckled bird.

I thought of mixing Amazing Grace with At The Cross; sing Amazing Grace to the tune of the verse of At The Cross, then sing the chorus of At The Cross.

That brought back memories.
Probably half a century ago I heard that sung sort of that way.
The words to Amazing Grace sung to the tune of the verses of Oh How I love Jesus.
