Toys From Our Childhood

I was just thinking about all of the toys we used to play with when I/We were kids.
Remember Clackers? I use to bang up my arms with that thing.
Hands Down, Cherry Pick, Kerplunk?
Kenner toys?

My daughter has an Easy Bake oven that I know was around when I was a kid.

Do you remember any other toys that you use to play with?

I'm probably the only one who had a brown hair, brown eyed, freckled face Chatty Cathy. I believe she was the first talking doll. It was 1962.

I remember the clackers. That was before people held others responsible for their own safety.

Probably my favorite... I had the whirly bird helicopter

The Cocopah Indian Reservation my grandfather lived on in the dunes or Somerton, AZ!
No electricity,
adobe huts,
raising chickens,
pulling big hairy spiders out of my shoes every morning,
making my own toys,
walking 4 miles into town to watch "Lost in Space, Capitan Nice, and Mr. Terrific" in the window of the furniture store in downtown Somerton, AZ!

Ah, those were the days!

I bought my wife one for Christmas last year. She had one as a kid and always wished her mother hadn't given it away.

As a side note, one of her friends was the inspiration for the name Chatty Cathy. I can tell you it is still an appropriate name.

Re: Toys From Our Childhood

Chatty Cathy was around when I was a kid but we could never afford one.

One year when I was in the 4th grade my dad had 2 heart attacks in the fall of that year. My mom told us not to expect things for Christmas that year because there was NO money.

Somehow a church outside of our town found out about us. They showed up with gifts and food. LOTS of gifts and food. All I had really hoped for that year was a Barbie. turns out I got Barbie, Midge, Skipper and Ken and tons of clothes. Then my grandpa made us a doll house that we could literally sit in ourselves. It was huge! And he made furniture for it. I still have the couch. He also made child sized furniture for all of us. He had gotten a great deal on naugahide, so everything was covered in that stuff. I still have the couch and chair from that set sitting in my family room even today. The kids use it every day and it is as solid today as it was the day he built it. Then he took all these scrap pieces of wood, sanded them, painted them and filled 50 lb. onion sacks with them. And those were our blocks to play with.

Turns out it was our best Christmas ever! :)

Soooo, I'm not the only Chatty Cathy fan! One of seven children, it seems there was always a baby in the house and always a jack-in-the-box with the familiar tune, "All around the mulberry bush the monkey chased the weasel..."

I had one of those! :yahoo Two of them actually. There were three of us kids, so we had to share the two of them. My little brother was the roughest on his bike, and eventually started stealing parts off the nicer bike that my sister and I rode mostly.

I remember when I was 12 I wanted to be a dirt bike racer! Vvroom...Vvvrrrooomm! :lol

Banana Seat Bikes!

I remember I had myself and two other friends "piggybacking" on the bike.

I got my foot caught in the spokes!

Don't ask! Yes it hurt, but we had fun!

My favorite was a Thumbelina doll. She moved just like a real baby.

Of course, I love playing army nurse (Barbie) with my brother and his G.I. Joe's. He had the whole army theme going on - - tent, jeep, etc. We played for hours in the backyard making an army camp. Years later when we extended our patio - dad dug up all sorts of plastic army men we had used!

I had these plastic space alien monsters that I used to play with when I was about 3 or 4.

I was very fond of my LEGO's, generic linkin logs, "Construx", frisbees and Matchbox Cars. I loved breaking rocks with rocks too.

Lost in Space was my Favorite TV show.

I made a Jupiter2 from cardboard and a Space Pod from balsa wood and cardboard.

I wrote my own comics (my art was awful).

I made clothes for my GI Joe and my sister's Barbie.

I had a real Erector set with motors and gears.

My sister and I had real Dam Dolls, not Wishniks but the ones that had Dam carved into the doll's back.

We built cities out of cardboard and made elevators out of milk cartons!

Army men!!!! Shot with my Daisy BB gun!

Major Matt Mason, I wrangled a barter with some kids for these two and a partial space station!

I got a Mattel's THING MAKER and made MORE Army men to shoot!!!!

Talk about the stone ages! Yet, I never quite had as much fun on a computer as I did during those days.
My online experience (on the C64) consisted of a 300 BAUD HES modem. You actually had to dial the number on the phone, listen for the computer warble on the other end, then quickly unplug it and plug it into the modem itself -it was not capable of dialing internally.

I wasn't hip enough at that point. I think I came on board at about the time of the first Atari. When you compare what we though was hot to what they have now, it is incredible how much they develop every five years or so.

I remember that modem well!

My first 6 months of the BBSes operation, when a call would come in, if it was a modem, I had to fake dial the C-64 and then plug in the phone line to allow the 64 to answer the call: OUCH!

Yep, I had rock 'em sock 'em robots, GI Joes', a cowboy and cowgirl (Jane West?) with horses.

I also had a robot, about 36" tall. He had flashing red lights for eyes, one of his arms was equipped with a spring that allowed you to shoot ping pong balls at others,he had a rocket launcher on his foot, and a knob that you turned on his back to make him "talk". 'Bout scared me to death when I first got him!

Those were the days. I spent hours riding my dirt bikes and racing, and went from working on mine to fixing everyone else’s bike in the neighborhood.

Built a shop in my parent's two car garage. Only knew one girl who rode a dirt bike when we were kids. She wasn't very good at it. Then again she was a girl, and girls ride like girls. Come to think of it there are also guys who ride like girls. :lol

Ahhhhh, memories!

I had a Commodore 64 with STACKS of disks with all kinds of games & programs. Did anybody have the clipper thingy that would cut the notch on the other side of the 5-1/4" disk so you could use both sides?

WHen I first started using the C64 it had a cassette tape drive.

My first modem was a screaming fast 2400 baud (not on the C64... that was on my first PC)

I used to get on BBS's and telnet out to the internet from there. We played Legends Of The Red Dragon on BBS's until they kept adding modules and the game got too risque. Then we bailed on it.

Oh yeah... tons of fun.
