Half Hour Of P.E. A Day!

Before you guys say that we are all Liberals, our Government in British Columbia for almost the last ten years has been Right Wing & Conservative in scope.

That being said, I have learned that the Vancouver School Board in conjunction with the Provincial Ministry of Education is asking that Elementary School kids
have 30 minutes of Physical Education a a day.
This year is Awareness of the need.
2009-2010 is something else.

2010-2011 is Mandatory!

While I think P.E. is good for kids overall, a Government "Mandating it!" sticks in my craw the wrong way!

What do you think?

It was mandated when I went to school.

It's already mandatory as far as I know.

Nope it's not mandatory in the states... they would like you to think so...

I know quite a few who do not participate in PE.

I also know quite a few that do not receive "mandatory" immunizations...

I know about the immunizations but PE is mandatory for graduation in high school, I don't know about every state.

It depends on the state as to whether or not it's mandatory. And there's always personal exemptions.

I am not saying I am personally in favor, but almost everything has a "religious exemption", including high school itself.

I remember girls did not "dress out" or wear gym shorts in school. They were however allowed to wear skirts over them, so they wouldn't fail. This was in the 50's and 60's.

I know the the state curriculum mandates 30 minutes of Physical Education in Elementary school. It can be carried out several ways- organized games and sports, board games, free play, exercise... In middle and high school it is 50 minutes. With increased standards and compressed curriculum, many schools have waived the PE time to add more academics to the school day. Now the student population is getting more obese- so there is a new emphasis on PE. I do know that students can be waived from participation. I am just speaking from my state, but this is true in a lot of states.

It was "mandatory" in my high school, all four years. But somehow I got out of it my Junior & Senior year. So there are exceptions to most rules.
