A question about changing ones name.

Alright, if someone wants to have a legal name change, must it be done in the state in which they were born?

Re: A question about changing ones name.

Qualified no.

Generally it is county of residence.

Purpose of name change?

Because like any good attorney, the answer usually is "it depends"

Generally speaking it can be filed in county of residence.

Generally a year before applying.

As always there can be exceptions.

I changed the spelling of my first name some years ago and had to have a close family member fill out a form and have it notarized to attest that I was who I said I was.

That sounds kinda backwoods-ish to me.

That sounds like an ignorant statement to me. :D

My name is pronounced the same, I had always spelled it a different way all of my life and finally had it changed.

That reminds me of a story.

My great uncle was born Jay Asbury Miller. His middle name was a family name. It was his grandfathers middle name.

But Uncle Jay hated that name and one day he came home and told his family that he had legally changed his middle name to Brown.

He did all his business as Jay Brown Miller and even his own children thought that was his name.... until he died....

all his business and even his home was listed under the name Jay Brown Miller but when he died (his wife preceeded him in death) and his estate went thru probate, it was discovered that he had never really legally changed his name!

Dude just did it himself! LOL! I think it added some headache to his kids dealing with probate but not too much.

We all did get one final laugh from Uncle Jay. He was a great man with a very dry sense of humor.

My wife's birth name that was given was "Ann Elizabeth Taylor".

When family members started calling her "Liz" after Elizabeth Taylor the actress.

Her mom legally changed it when she was around 3 to "Ann Michelle Taylor".

We have a bCertificate that shows the date handwritten back in 1968 where they wrote the change in the county books...

My dads legal name is Roney or Ronney, I can't remember which. He has gone by Ronnie his whole life, I don't know what my grandparents were thinking. Of course, his mother is the person who has gone by her middle name her entire life, Lenora (legal name Roberta Lenora) and turns around and names my aunt Roberta Delisa, the same first name she will not use. My aunt goes by Lisa... :crazy

Here is a great way to have fun on a new job. Have your drivers license, social security card, and birth certificate all have DIFFERENT spellings of your first name! (Like mine.... Randy, Randal, and Randall).

What is strange is that I had no problems getting my passport (which says "Randy" on it).

I think it costs about $100 in our county. My wife checked. I wonder why?

She could change her name but it might cost you 50% of what you have and 25% of what you will make! :O.)

Maybe they think you are related to "John"

Re: A question about changing ones name.

My wife has been trying for years to get me to change the pronunciation of our last name. If you have a thick Southern accent it sounds like you're referring to a rather uncomely bodily orifice when you say our last name. I think it's pretty funny...but she isn't so humored by it.

They are hard to find - but even if I find one - I am keeping my name. I have too much money invested in licenses and such! :gift
