I have never been to one.
I have always wanted to sing Christmas Carols by candle light!

I never had been to one either until last night. Our church did one and it turned out beautifully.

Yes, we're doing one this coming Sunday.

I've only been to one in my whole life, and it was a candlelit communion service. I loved it. It felt so intimate and special. And the music was all acoustic or acapella--which was a refreshing change.

I would love it! However here in Brazil candles are associated with the Catholic and Spiritist religions...

Our church does it, but I'd stay home.

So what's your problem with it that you'd stay home?

Candles used as part of worship service is my problem. Check out the history of Christ mass and candles associated with it.

Ok, for someone who is totally clueless-

How does it work?? Does everyone get a candle? or you just have the church lit by candles or what???

What did they used to light the church with before electricity?

Lamps and stuff, Using candles just for light is not a prob but part of religious ceremony like catholics do is wrong. Many pagans/cults use candles. I would stay home.

I can respect your conviction, although I don't believe there to be any Biblical reason for it.

Matt 5:15
Mark 4:21
Luke 8:16
Luke 11:36

As long as it is not a ritual or rite, there is nothing wrong with a little symbolism or just the plain fact that candle light is very pretty.

We should be careful with symbols or using things for religious meaning that is not scripture. Yes we should be the light of the world.

I agree with you that we should be careful, and respect your conviction.

I do think if Jesus used the Candle as a symbol, an object lesson if you will, than it wouldn't be harmful to use it once a year as well.
We've never had a candle lit service, to my knowledge, but it would be neat to have once in a while.

In one church we worked in, the youth choir sang "Carry your Candle" and each held a candle. I didn't see any harm in that whatsoever. It was simply reiterating the object lesson Jesus taught himself.

Now if they asked me to pay to light a candle for my sick loved one, I'd have a problem!!!

Yep....that's kind of a requirement to be in the ministry. You start lying and people, for some reason, lose faith in ya.

(YOu know I'm just having fun, right...I've already been accused of being cranky today...)

I've seen them done before where for most of the service there are lights on, but at the end for one last part everyone has a candle and at that time everybody lights their candles - like someone in each section has their's lit and then everybody lights each others until everyone's is lit...

The way we're doing it though is just having the church lit by candle and oil lamp light for the whole service.

Basically, you can do it however you want - there's not a right or wrong way....be creative. :D

We've had a Christmas service before where we had candles and oil lamps lighted, but also had the the lights on the ceiling fans in the sanctuary turned on, but not the main lights.

Have done communion somewhat similar to that too.

I guess its up to who puts these types of services together. I never have had commounion like that.

Re: Candle light services

I think for communion we just had the lights dimmed (only the ceiling fan lights on) and there were a few candles on the communion table.
