Okay...explain this to me like I'm a 2 yr. old

If this has been discussed/explained somewhere else, please point me in the right direction, but in the words of the great Vinnie Barbarino, "I am SO confused!!"

For all who own/watch TV, Feb. 17 marks the change to digital. Now Comcast, our cable provider, one day says that we don't need to do a thing, that the change is automatic, and another day tells us that we need a converter box.

That without it, we will lose PBS, and everything else (we have limited cable) except ABC, NBC, and CBS.

So we sent off for the $40 coupons, went to the store to pick up the converters, and was told that cable will not work with the converter.

Called Comcast, and they said we don't need the converters at all...

Does anyone know, and can you explain it all in childlike terms?!

Comcast - you do not need the converter box.

Now, go get a cookie and don't spill your milk!

Do you have Comcast digital cable? Do you already have a box, or is your cable connected directly to your television?

If you have Comcast Cable, you’re ready already for the Digital Transition.
If all your TVs are currently connected to Comcast, you don't have to worry about a thing. When February 17, 2009 rolls around, you can just sit back, relax and keep watching your favorite shows.

My Mom is waiting for her coupon to come in to buy another box, because the first one quit working.

Let me know how cheap and you would have to mail it to La. But she may be interested.

This is the official response, but when you talk to those dudes on the phone, it's a different story.

One guy told us we would need the cable box, but not the converter...it's crazy.

Barb, if you get your TV via an Antina (over the air) then you need the converter box. if you have a wire comeing into your house from any company that you pay for TV, then you dont need the converter box.

This is a subject/question/problem that will not affect Christians.

REAL Christians don't watch, own, or even sneak a peek at tv.

If you use rabbit ears or a rooftop antenna then you need the converter box.

I do not know anyone that does not have cable.

I think half of the coupons were used by folks who will not use the box.

Watch on Ebay there will be junkies seeling them for $15.00...

My mom doesn't have cable or dish or anything. So she needed a box. She got one and my brother hooked it up for her and WAaaLaaa! She suddenly got almost 20 channels that she has never been able to get before! She is delirious!

Walt decided that even tho we have DISH, we should have a converter box "just in case the dish ever goes out and we have to rely on rabbit ears for a couple of days" Geesh! I just laughed at him and said, "go get one if it makes you happy". So he bought TWO!

What am I gonna do with the man????

If you have analog tv's you will not need any box from Comcast. Their digital signal will be converted (by Comcast) to analog signal and your tv will still work.

If you are using rabbit ears or outside antenna then you will need the converter boxes.
This will convert new digital signals to analog. Keeps you from having to purchase a digital tuner tv.

Comcast was not telling you you need a convert. Someone on TV was telling those with analog antennas to get a converter box. You have cable and a cable ready TV so you don't need anything

If you have cable, dish, etc... anything but the old antenna, rabbit ears, you should be ok.

You said you had limited cable. Some people can not get certain channels in their area even with cable. If this is the case and you have a switch box to pick them up then you will need the convertor box only for those channles.

Wrong, Prax...someone from Comcast was telling me to get a converter...more than one someone.

As a matter of fact, one little dude told me to get one from them, plus pay an activation fee.

Anyway, I thnk I have it figured out now, thanks.

Barb, how old is your tv. Most from about 2007 on have built in digital tuners.
Again I said most, some may not.

The converter boxes are ONLY to receive channels from OVER THE AIR broadcast stations.

If you have Cable or Satellite, you do not need a converter box.

If you use an Indoor or Outdoor Antenna to receive your channels, THEN you need a converter box.

Radio Shack carries the best two on the market.

There's your problem. I bet he was saying you needed a "box" as in their box - that's the only ones that Comcast would have to sell anyway. They aren't going to be selling the converter box because that means people aren't buying their services.

I have a box from Comcast on my main TV with DRV, etc., but my TV in my bedroom doesn't have a box (from Comcast) cable is just hooked up directly. He was trying to "sell" you another one of their boxes.

How confusing.

Re: Okay...explain this to me like I'm a 2 yr. old

We have cox cable so shouldn't need a converter. But the TV in the guest room isn't connected. 1st how many splits can you make ? AND the family room in basement beneath that room is totally finished......as in plastered ceiling. Hubby did not want to try and run cable and mess up a ceiling.

So we use the classic rabbit ears antenna; it is unreliable**** And we live 1 mile E of the 3 network antennas for our large metro area. The signal is sometimes too strong-----
In any event, bought the converter box. As Margie already posted...what a fun time. Now this tv gets many new stations. Public tv has a 24hr station with cooking, decorating, travel,,,,pretty cool for any folks who cannot afford cable.
