CAN A PERSON HAVE THE HOLY GHOST AND BE DEMON POSSESSED AT THE SAME TIME?



I do not believe a person can be totally possessed and have the Holy Ghost. I do believe a person can have a demonic spirit and the Holy Ghost at the same time. I have spoken to several ministers that operate in the deliverance ministry and they have told me first hand they have cast spirits out of people that have the Holy Ghost.

Perhaps one way of looking at this is a house has several rooms. Each room is filled with different things. The human spirit may fill one and a demonic spirit another and the Holy Ghost may fill several.

I believe if a person is totally filled with God’s spirit then they would not lie or do anything contrary to God’s Word. But most folks do sin because there has been room left for the human spirit and/or demonic spirits.

Do you agree or disagree with the above statements?

I agree with you. FILLED with the Spirit disallows one to have anything else inside, though. Paul said to not give PLACE (TOPOS in Greek, which means OCCUPANCY) to the devil. Acts 2:38 is not a cure-all. We must STAY filled with the Spirit.

God dwelt in the most holy place of the temple. That is synonymous with indwelling our human spirits. But we have soul and body as well. And if our souls are not yielded to God for His spirit to influence us, the Spirit of God is locked away in our human spirits alone, and there will be darkness in our souls from sin and carnality.

I agree. Too many of us, me included, are not FILLED with the Holy Ghost. I believe Bro. Tom Barnes was as close as anyone I have ever met.

Paul told believers with the Spirit in Ephesus to BE FILLED WITH THE SPIRIT. If they already had the Holy Ghost and that meant they were always filled, why speak such an admonition to them? Having the Spirit and being FILLED with it are two different things.

It does not fill us like VOLUME being occupied by physical matter, but INFLUENCE from the Spirit being fully submitted to, will cause us to say we are FILLED.

You would not call it demon POSSESSION if someone had a spirit in them without it absolutely controlling them. DEMON POSSESSION is like SPIRIT FILLING in terminological implication. Not that the Spirit of God is evil. lololol. PLEASE note that disclaimer. Spirit FILLING disallows anything else from entering. Demon POSSESSION also implies nothing else but the devil is in a person. There are degrees to indwelling presence of both God's Spirit and a demon spirit, though.

The folks who did SEARCH FOR TRUTH bible study did a series called ABC -- and volumes 16-18 are about this very thing.

No, the Holy Spirit does not co-habitat with Satan. However, if you define speaking in tongues as the Holy Ghost, then I guess he could. The Holy Spirit is defined by the fruit it produces; love, joy, peace, etc. and it must testify of Jesus the Christ.

Much of what is Pentecostalism today is not the Holy Spirit, but rather a mystical form of witchcraft which is very subtle to mimic the true infilling of the Holy Spirit, however the fruit which is produced is aberrant and not fit for spiritual consumption.

I think most do use speaking in tongues as the evidence of having the Holy Ghost. I do know that the devil can cause people to speak in tongues as well, but the Holy Ghost should be able to discern the difference.

Yes! It is BLASPHEMING THE HOLY GHOST. Possession and oppression by spirits are Not the same ball of wax. Thats when God turns them over to a reprobate mind. This is a very basic answer to that question. Mature DM know many factors weigh-in here IF God will REDELIVER a soul or not. See Romans 1st and 2nd chapters and all of Jude. And Thyatira in Revelation 2. God or SAtan owns a person. Not both. Bound by spirits comes from sinning and isnt possession, yet...

It is not cohabitation. This is the key. The Spirit of God and the devil cannot abide in the same "room". Man has compartments in him, to use a crude example. Spirit and soul are not the same thing. When we are carnally minded and think bad things, the Spirit of God does not dwell in our souls. He refuses! We hem Him in our spirits when we mind earthly things that are wicked. So a spirit has the potential to enter the soul of a person, when the Spirit of God is not influencing that "compartment" of our beings.

God cannot co-inhabit a room with the devil.

Possession is not indwelling. Possession is CONTROLLING all a person when indwelling. But a devil can indwell a person without possessing them just as God's Spirit can indwell a person and not FILL them. We need FILLING of the Spirit to be gained and maintained.

OCCUPIED

The human spirit is a vessel, along with acting as our contact with God and the spiritual realm. Only our spirits are born again.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit. John 3:6

God actually fills our humans spirits with His Holy Spirit when we are born again. He dwells in our spirits. The human spirit and God's Spirit are then united as one, much like a man and a woman unite as one flesh in marriage. God likens His relationship with the Church as a husband and wife relationship. We become one spirit with Jesus Christ.

What? know ye not that he which is joined to an harlot is one body? for two, saith he, shall be one flesh. But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.
1 Cor 6:16-17

For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Eph 5:31

Our spirits were empty until Christ filled them with His Spirit. And now that we are One Spirit with Christ, nothing else can enter those vessels. We are intended to now express His Spirit throughout our souls and then on through our bodies in godly activity and loving deeds.

Since the human spirit is a vessel, and is indeed spirit, it can be housed by one of two types of spirits. God's Spirit, of course, is what is intended to occupy the human spirit. That is what the human spirit was created to house. Yet one's spirit can house a demon spirit if one dabbles into the spiritual side of darkness. There is a dark side to the spiritual realm as well as a godly side. Satan is a spirit as much as God is, though God is everywhere present and Satan is not.

Witches and occultists contain evil spirits in their human spirits, and act as vessels for evil as much as believers can be vessels of God's Spirit.

But a believer who has God's Spirit within the human spirit will never experience a demon spirit entering that human spirit, unless, of course, the person backslides and slips into witchcraft, or the likes. Therefore, a Christian with the Holy Ghost can never be demon possessed. Spirits of Satan must control all three components of man, namely the spirit, soul and body, before a person can even be called possessed.

God's Spirit does not possess a believer, but rather is said to fill a believer. "Possession" implies control, and God does not wish to control anybody, but desires us to be workers together with Him of our free will. Demon spirits, though, seek control.

INVASION

Submitting to God builds a barrier around us (which we will study later). And lack of submission makes for lack of protection and defense against the enemy. We must submit our whole spirits and souls and bodies to God, or the enemy can literally invade our souls and bodies!

A mind that is not submitted to God, and entertains thoughts of evil and envy, etc., is a mind that can be invaded, since there is no presence of God's Spirit in such a mind, though He be in the human spirit. But unless He can flow into the mind of the person, the Spirit of God is locked up, as it were, within the human spirit.

Lack of submission does not mean a demon is in the soul or body, but that it is possible for one to enter these areas if sinful thinking, etc., is allowed to grow into a major problem.

Paul clearly teaches that there is the possibility of a spirit literally invading a believer's life:

Neither give place to the devil.
Eph 4:27

The Greek word for "place" is TOPOS, (top'-os; "a spot, generally in space, but limited by occupancy.") OCCUPANCY is implied in this verse. We are not to let the devil OCCUPY our lives. The same word was used in describing the lack of occupancy for Joseph and Mary in the Inn.

[indet]And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.
Luke 2:7 [/indent]
The word "room " in the above verse is translated also from TOPOS, and implies occupancy. So we are to give no room within us, or no occupancy, to the devil. Of course, there is the thought that we give room to the enemy without his presence actually indwelling us as we simply give him opportunity to affect us. However, to what degree of topos can we as believers give to the devil?
"FILLED" WITH THE HOLY GHOST

And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
Eph 5:18

What does "filled" with the Holy Ghost mean? It means a mouthful! If you are filled then you are completely submitted - in body, soul and spirit. Your "whole spirit and soul and body" is "preserved blameless." That's saying a lot! (1 Thess. 5:23).

Picture this through the illustration of a bottle:

The full state of the vessel is similar to one being full of the Spirit. In a bottle that has a water level at the half-way point, the bottle is not full. The water level in this illustration symbolizes "submission" not "quantity" of the Spirit. Spirit is not restricted to time or space, so we cannot use the term fullness of Spirit with regards to any thought of "quantity".

The term "filled" infers yielded. Since the human spirit is always full of God's Spirit (made one with It after experiencing New Birth) the level of submission to the Spirit always decrease or increase in the soul and body alone. As we set our hearts to do more for God and let Him have His way, as opposed to having our own ways all the time, our souls are set to then submit moreso to Him, than they were in the past. The less we submit to God the less the level of Spirit filling we will experience.

We have mentioned earlier that God's Spirit and man's human spirit become one after Spirit Baptism. Therefore, submission is not a problem with the human, born-again spirit.

1 Cor. 6:16-17

The body of a person must be submitted to God, also. Romans 6:13 tells us that our souls and bodies must be consciously yielded to God. Submitted.

"...yield yourselves (souls) unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members (bodies) as instruments of righteousness unto God."

Yielding is necessary after rebirth. If one was immediately filled with the Spirit, and forever remained so, what need would Paul have in telling believers to "yield"? This yielding is just what we are referring to as being necessary for constant filling. One is totally yielded to God upon reception of the Spirit, signified by speaking with tongues. James tells us that the hardest member of the body to control is the tongue. So, when the Lord inspired the believers in Acts 2 to speak in tongues, He signified that He had, for that moment, gained total control over those believers.

Ephesians 5:18 relates filling of the Spirit with the drinking of alcohol. Fullness of alcohol causes base desires of the flesh to superabound. Fullness of the Spirit, on the other hand, allows stimulation to do the will of God. And just as one must have a great intake of alcohol so as to allow stimulation to occur towards excessive debauchery, one can have an increase of Spirit stimulation!

The body must be yielded to God in prayer, requesting that the Lord use it. It must be presented to Him. Romans 12:1 tells us to present our bodies to God as living sacrifices. And it emphasizes "servitude" when it tells us that this is our reasonable "service". Submission is servitude! Through yielding our bodies to God we can rightly find the victory to "do" that which we would do. Many cannot do what they will, or desire, to do (Ro. 7:18). In fact many abandon the goal of fulfilling God's will in their daily lives after trying to accomplish it and then failing. The fact is that they are not yielding their bodies to God for His use, but are trying to work in their own power.
THE TABERNACLE

Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?
1Cor 3:16

There were three main sections in the construction of the tabernacle. The temple was similarly divided into three sections. This is much like the make-up of a person.

There is the outer court which corresponds to the body of a man. Then we have the holy place relating to the soul of a man. And finally the tabernacle contained the Most Holy Place which is relative to the human spirit.

What was the purpose of the tabernacle?

Let them make me a sanctuary that I may dwell among them.
Exodus 25:8

Compare this with our experience in Jesus Christ:

Jesus answered and said, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come and make our abode with him.
John 14:23.

God tabernacles in us when we have the Spirit of God within. He dwells in the innermost man - the human spirit. If allowed, He will penetrate into the more outward man, which is the soul, and accomplish His will in the mind.

He wants to come into our minds that He may make us like Himself in character. This is godliness. He will change our habitual wrongdoings and make us meek and loving. He will actually shine through us as a light shone through Gideon's clay jars that were broken.

That he would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man; that Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye being rooted and grounded in love may be able to comprehend with all saints what is the breadth, and length, and depth, and height; and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge, that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God.
Eph. 3:16

To begin with, realize that Paul spoke this to the Ephesian Church. Not to sinners. These people were believers who had received the Spirit. Therefore, when Paul told them God would grant them to be strengthened with might by His Spirit in the inner man, we can see that simply having received the Baptism of the Spirit does not strengthen your inner man, the soul, alone. We must consciously allow God to do it. If we were already strengthened in our souls by His Spirit through simply having received the Spirit, Paul would have no need of writing these words. He is in our spirits, but now we must let Him strengthen our souls by that Spirit within.

What does the strengthening of our souls accomplish? We read that this yielding involves a grounding and a rooting in love.

"...that ye being rooted and grounded in love "

Again, we must work towards this end after we have received the Spirit into our lives. Once we are rooted and grounded we can comprehend (understand) the breadth, length, depth and height of God's Spirit. Comprehending is a function of the mind, or soul.

Paul continues and says we will then also be able to "know" Christ's love.

"...and to know the love of Christ, which passeth knowledge..."

All this ends up in our opportunity to then be "filled" with "all the fullness of God". Notice the words - "that ye might be". "that ye might be filled with all the fulness of God."

Believers may not necessarily be filled with all the fulness of God. If we submit to the Spirit of God within and experience the breakdown of independent endeavours of our human wills, which act like barriers through which God cannot stimulate our souls, His Spirit can fill us.

If we yield our souls, it can be said that God dwells in them, as well as dwelling in our spirits.

All these experiences are not guaranteed after reception of the Spirit alone. We must submit to that Spirit within so that it might move into our souls to "fill" us with the Spirit.

A strengthened soul is a mind that is set to do God's will, and therefore is aided by God to do so. Emotions are then controlled - they are not given to anger, hatred and jealousy, by God's power.

In the tabernacle, only one individual could enter the Most Holy place. The High Priest. Jesus Christ is our High Priest -

"Seeing that we have a great High Priest that is passed into the heavens, Jesus Christ..."
He. 4:14.

Jesus Christ is the Holy Ghost and High Priest who enters a man's spirit. After He does so, none else can enter there. The spirit which dwells within the human spirit is the ruling force in that person as far as the spiritual world goes. None other may claim control until the occupying spirit leaves the human spirit - whether it is demonic or whether it is the Spirit of God.

The idol Dagon fell when it was in the presence of the ark of the covenant in the same room. A demon spirit, in like manner, cannot enter a man's spirit that is one with the Spirit of the Lord.

Christ prayed that we might be one with Him. When our spirits and souls are one with the Lord, there is no room for any other influence within to lead us astray. We are in harmony with Christ and at perfect victory. This was Christ's prayer.

Only that which has "holiness unto the Lord" written across its brow can enter the temple of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost is holy.

Our souls and bodies, however, can have unholiness within them at the same time our spirits can have the Holy Ghost in them.

Eli was a high priest. A Levite. Eli's sons were priests also (see 1 Sam. 1:3). During their servitude in the tabernacle these two men were found to have laid with women who assembled at the door of the tabernacle (1 Sam. 2:22). These sons, Hophni and Phinehas, continued ministering in the Tabernacle while committing adultery! However, should they have entered the Holiest Place, they would have been struck down by God's power! In other words, sin can dwell in our souls and bodies, although God's Spirit is in our spirits. A demon spirit may even gain access there, although this can never happen with the human spirit that is made one with God's Spirit. A devil can put his foot in the outer court or the holy place, but never in the Holiest of man's spirit.

IMO, it's not complicated; Romans 6:16
Know ye not, that to whom ye yield yourselves servants to obey, his servants ye are to whom ye obey; whether of sin unto death, or of obedience unto righteousness?

The works of the flesh are manifested and the fruit of the Spirit is too. If the Holy Spirit is dwelling in you and has taken your total being captive, you will not operate willfully in sin. The propensity to sin will always be with us, but sin itself has been removed from us when we dwell in Christ.

Again, the whole concept of speaking in tongues to "get" the Holy Spirit IMO is incorrect.

The key to this concept is "righteousness" or "unrighteousness" and one cannot be both at the same time. God's promises are to the righteous. It would take me way too long to explain this, so suffice to say, I do not believe in traditional OP definition of being filled with the Holy Ghost.

When we come to Christ and surrender our hearts to him, the process of sanctification begins. If we allow that process to mature, we will move closer and closer to him, if we resist, we will stay in spiritual immaturity and never grow in the grace and knowledge of Christ.

A "liar" is one who has disconnected from the reality of the situation and is motivated by fear. All of which are works of the human spirit and not Christ.

The bible never describes us like that and to be baptized with the Spirit is to be totally filled. We are not the Travel Lodge where God is staying in one room and demons staying in another

Sis, in my own opinion (and that's all it is) I do not believe the the Holy Ghost will inhabit a man with a devil. I believe it is quite possible to sin even if one has the Holy Ghost because of a carnal nature as opposed to a demonic nature. I think we have more of a battle fighting our flesh than the devil.

That's anecdotal stuff.

I go by what I see in the word, not what some preacher says. There are lots of things I've heard said, by preachers that I have respect for... but if I cant line it up with scripture, I cant just accept it as being truth.

I'm not going to definitively say it's not possible. But I'll definitely say there's nothing in scripture that tells me it is.

And if someone is going to tell me it can happen, they've got to do better than telling me there are "multiple rooms" within man. I don't see any scripture for that either.

Much of what people are fighting, as pertaining to spirits, is oppression, not possesion. As far as us being multiple rooms, wow, I never heard that before. Almost sounds like Christian Schytzophrenic!

1 thess 5:23. No physical rooms, remember. God is a Spirit. Physical rooms are not the issue. Principally, you are not to put a candle under a bushel. The spirit of a man is the candle of the Lord. And He "lights" our spirits with His Spirit. And our souls can act like bushels with carnal minds and wicked thoughts. And His light is hindered from influencing into our souls by His Spirit.

Unless you believe spirit and soul are the same thing, you will see the distinction. Rooms are only as close as I can get to describing the distinction of indwelling places. Neither God nor evil spirits are physical. Explain how one man called a demoniac had 2,000 demons. It is not a phyiscal issue.

Paul said give no ROOM (place) to the devil.

Well I respect what you say here. But I don't think we have arrived at knowing and understanding all of scripture. But it is definitely our guideline. However, I don't think every single thing we will or have encountered is in the scriptures.

Disclaimer: I have not personally seen a person delivered from a spirit that also had the Holy Ghost. And again remember we are NOT talking about being POSSESSED of a spirit. But possessing a spirit. Hope that makes sense.

As to the terminology of the different rooms, that is the way it was explained to me and made sense. And this was by UPC ministers that have actually dealt with this.

Two of them have dealt with a lot of this including ministers having this situation.

When I think of powerful men/women of God I think of them as having more of God than a non-powerful man or woman. I don't know any other way to express what I am trying to say.

But I don't think we are all equal in the power of God. Therefore, I would express that as one having more of God or the Holy Ghost ever how you want to express it.
