Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

It seems hard to believe that some say AFF has caused others to change what they believe. Do you feel members here are too weakminded and have allowed debate and varying ideas to sway them?

Have you change?

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

No. :) The process of discussing a matter helps me refine my own beliefs, but I haven't changed my mind on anything just because someone on AFF "said so."

Overall, my belief system is the same as it was before I ever joined FCF. The only thing that has changed for me is that I'm more tolerant of other folks' views.

I’ve changed my stand on various things but I don’t think I’ve changed my beliefs. For example, I was raised in an ultra-conservative church that was very rigid and legalistic. I stood by those teachings for years, embracing them and teaching them. However, in my heart of hearts I was far more moderate. When I came to AFF I met Apostolics who were full of faith and love for Jesus, but who were far more open minded and less legalistic. I began to feel comfortable in allowing my true beliefs come to the surface so my stands changed somewhat…but deep down my beliefs never really did. AFF gave me the format needed to cut through what I was taught so that I could truly articulate what I really believed. For this I am thankful. I’m far more “spiritual” now and less “religious”. However, it’s caused me some significant stress in my community of faith because I’m far more moderate than most Apostolic churches around me. So in a lot of ways I’m a man without a home.

Yes,

What I have held sacred for years is now questionable.

All this time I believed I knew the truth, I had it figured out and no one could convince me other wise.

However, I have seen reality and embraced what I now know to be fact without a doubt.

The forum has help me realize that I am not the only one who believes like I do. I have learned about things that I would have never known otherwise.

This is how I view AFF - not changing beliefs, but allowing those that haven't had a place to discuss different issues to feel comfortable discussing them.

What's wrong with changing one's beliefs? Why do you call it "weakminded", as opposed to, say, "teachable" or "open minded"?

And no, AFF hasn't changed my beliefs. But Renda is right - a place to discuss things that you've had on your mind.

Amen!

I have not "changed" my beliefs. I was well into a time of reflection and maturation when I stumbled upon AFF. My views have benefited from debate and dialogue, but I have not changed my core beliefs. But, IMO, there are some people who would benefit from opening their minds a little. I'm not "weakminded," but I am "open-minded" - clearly willing to admit that I don't know or understand it all. And I'm also intelligent enough to recognize that anyone who DOES think they know or understand it all is ignorant.

Good post - as was the one from Timmy. At some point, someone has had an influence on every one of us. The idea that what we "first" believed is the absolute truth and we have nothing else to learn from others is silly. I haven't changed my core beliefs by being on this forum, but I have re-evaluated my stances on certain things.

Repeated what I have heard others say.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

If someone feels that way - it's really sad.

Just because one questions, discusses and comes away from a discussion more informed doesn't make them weakminded.

Bingo. But who wants to admit that?

It hasn't changed me at all. I have found many that believe as I do and many that don't. I haven't found anyone that I 100% agree with all the time.

I want to be more like Jesus and I haven't found anyone that has achieved that yet.

I will!!!

I have no problem with that. I'm about as transparent as you can get, and I gladly recognize that there have been many who have influenced me - and not just on this forum. If someone thinks he/she has not been influenced by anyone, they are delusional!

Again, echoing what Derrick said, I haven't changed my core beliefs, but I have been challenged to "prove all things" and have re-evaluated my stance on some things.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

My interaction with other people on and offline has at times made me re-evaluate some things that I hadn't ever taken the time to study or search out for myself. After study and prayer, I've changed on some things. On other things, my beliefs remained the same.

But most of that occurred before the inception of this forum. And it was never a matter of someone's arguments winning me over..I considered other's arguments but always studied it out for myself.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

This forum and the internet in general has given me an opportunity to see that there are many different ways to look at scripture. It has caused me to think, reevaluate and study what I believe. It has not caused me to change any of my core beliefs.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

I haven't been here long enough for it to change me, but I'm really loving the forum! :)

I'm in a strange place.... at heart I'm pretty much a "liberal", but I've always attended ultra con churches (well, the church I attended as a child wasn't ultra ultra, but certainly not liberal). For complicated reasons, I'll probably stay where I am for a while. So, since I can't really air my views publically, it's nice to have this place where I can participate in conversations with widely varying viewpoints.

When I read the infamous Fudge book several years ago it helped me feel vindicated. I realized I was not such a maverick and certainly not backslidden, reprobate, or a heretic. I was just "old time" Apostolic and believed like the Apostolic/Pentecostal pioneers preached, taught, and practiced before the "three-steppers" took over.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

Yeah, it has really messed me up. I am now singing Kathy's Song to Jesus Himself.

And so you see I have come to doubt

All that I once held as true

I stand alone without beliefs

The only truth I know is you

And as I watch the drops of rain

Weave their weary paths and die

I know that I am like the rain

There but for the grace of you go I.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

I've changed.

A few years ago, I'd have refused to watch a JCM Reunion DVD with singers who had left the UPC and forsaken the "Look".

I recentlly purchased the DVD and not only watched it all but enjoyed it and even felt the Holy Ghost while doing so.

I am proud of the change and hope I never return to the old judgemental self that I use to be.

All current Apostolic pastors and new candiates for the ministry should be forced to lurk here for a minimum of 2 years.

Thank You AFF.

Re: Has AFF Changed Your Beliefs?

I'm not sure?

I found AFF not too long after coming back to church and my beliefs have changed, or shifted, or something. But I don't really think AFF is responsible. I think it's been the growth and studying I've been doing. AFF has definitely given me things to think about and to study, and made me rethink things a few times over.

AFF has caused me to do some of the following:

1. Think
2. Believe
3. Engage
4. Discover
5. Ask
6. Observe
7. Prove
8. Become
