A recent poll of more than 350,000 Americans on the importance of religion revealed that the nation is separated into enclaves of widely divergent viewpoints on faith, with some states and regions clearly religious and others significantly secular. Gallup conducted a telephone poll of 355,334 U.S. adults, asking the question, "Is religion an important part of your daily life?"

As one might suspect, states from the "Bible Belt" scored the highest, with 85 percent of Mississippians and 79 percent of Tennesseeans, for example, answering yes.

The poll also revealed, however, that in addition to the Bible Belt, the U.S. also has a pair of "secular strips."

Well, TN is MOST RELIGIOUS. I'm not sure if that's a good thing or a bad thing some days. Religion won't save anyone, but everyone down here seems to think they're "saved" because somewhere back years ago, they went to church or signed a card or something.

Well, its definitely true that religion doesnt save anyone, but having a religious mindset is a good thing. At least that makes them more receptive to the possibility of accepting the gospel.

I remember when I was at a church in NYC and we were in a area that was very secular-minded. It was amazing and disheartening to me how many people in that area just had no regard for church or religion in general. Even when we were handing out tracts in the area, some of those folks would look at us and walk past us like we were trying to hand them piles of do-do.

Here in GA, as in other parts of the south, its a much different environment. I feel like here you can talk more freely about God, religion, etc, and people are a lot more receptive to it. It's a significant difference, and a very good one.

I guess I'm cohabitating with many of those who are pert' near heatherns, TR. Even Auquila's got more Bible thumpin' neighbors then me. My state is "Less Religious."

Arkansas is religious but I don't know that it means anything. I agree with Sherri, everyone thinks they are saved, from the dope dealers to the angry church deacons.

We're average as a state. As a city..... very very high percentage Catholic; an example>> 6 catholic high schools.

I agree with you…been places where people are not open to talking about God or prayer.

Glad I live in somewhat of a religious state… in our small office of 21 people.. I know what it is to get together with co workers and form a circle and I’m often asked to lead prayer when someone is sick or going through trials of life… prayer and God is the first that everyone turns to around here… makes it very easy to talk about God. I couldn’t imagine living in a place that was more secular minded…

My whole region, New England, is the least religious, and Vermont is the least religious state in the nation (or so I heard at Winterfire this year)... That's why I am hoping to plant an assembly in NH and VT one day.

Alabama is a very religious state ,everybody thinks they are saved because they have shaken a preacher's hands and have signed a card or something ,there are Southern baptist churches on every corner.
Alabama is big on religion but not big on truth.

Unless they were to set up BEER as a god. Then we'd be MOST religious.
