"Jesus is my Boyfriend" music

I'd read about this new phenomenon before (google it-believe me, you'll find a number of articles) but experienced it first hand with a song I heard today entitled My Romance.

Look at the way the flowers bloom for You
They want to show You their beauty Lord
Running waters dance, You and I romance

Chorus:
Unto You be all the glory.
Unto You be all the glory (repeat)

Bridge:
The angels dance around You
The earth it sings about You
Open up the heavens Lord
Let Your Kingdom come to earth

my praises all surround you
my soul can't dance without you
open up the heavens Lord
let Your kingdom come to earth

What say ye? Is it possible that some Christian music is getting too close to that line?

What line? Maybe it is just the feminisation of the church we hear so much about. I really don't have a problem with the lyrics even though they are a little lame.

I thought the song was mediocre. It was the whole , running waters dance , you and I romance that had me a bit uncomfortable

This a good song. I wouldn't describe this as a "Jesus is my boyfriend" song.

I don't think there's anything wrong with these songs, but that's JMHO. I guess as a man, it would be a bit weird to sing some of them. I remember hearing one about "the kisses of your lips" and that was a bit much for me.

The songs from the website I cited weren't songs I personally have any feeling about-in all honesty, I have not heard half of them. It was just something I found on Google that I thought would add to what I was saying

This is part of the words we are singing from the song Love is Here

Come to the lover
All who want

Question: what's the difference between these lyrics and verses from the Song of Solomon which are an allegory of Christ and the church?

Is it just phobia of singing intimate words or what?

This is kind of what I was thinking. God, Himself, uses some fairly intimate language to illustrate His relationship with us.....His bride. It's His idea, really. I think a lot of it, as long as the message is not anti-biblical, is a matter of taste. For instance, I don't do country and we don't "twang" @ NLC. As long as I'm pastor, we won't do that! Don't mean to be offensive....I don't preach against it, but that's not who we are and it's not who I am. :D

I'm with Soldout on this one. Some of these songs are just a bit too much for me.

I don't mind singing about loving God, or saying that I can sing of His love for ever, but this kind of stuff just emasculates the church and chases more men away imo

Re: "Jesus is my Boyfriend" music

Maybe it's just me too but there is one song we sing that I actually like...except for one part where a very deep voiced male sings and then it seems all the females in the praise team repeat what he says without the guys...since I can only hear female voices singing back up I honestly feel kinda stupid being part of some dudes female backup singers lol..

Sorry but it sounds limp

I've heard this phrase "Jesus is my boyfriend music" before and it's really stuck in my mind. As I was reading through some of the lyrics to these songs (that I know and really like), I almost wanted to blush. They are a little "boyfriendy" aren't they? Don't know if that's really good or bad, but I can see where a lot of men aren't comfortable singing these songs.

I don't like the "Boyfriend" genre at all, but I have to admit you do have a point. Unless of course SoS was never intended as allegory.

Either way, I don't recall much "Song of Solomon type" praise in the Bible. It seems to me that most of the psalmists actually praised God in more majestic terms. Of course, I could be wrong, but that is more of the type of praise that I am attracted to. To me it's almost like how parents need to be parents and not their childrens' "friends"...I'd rather my relationship with God not be romantic and sensual in those terms.

Re: "Jesus is my Boyfriend" music

http://mattstone.blogs.com/journeysi...im-not-in.html

For the third point to make is a theological one. Jesus is not your boyfriend, not your fiance, and not your eventual husband.

By God's grace, Christians get to enjoy a wide range of relationships with Jesus. We are described in the New Testament variously as Jesus' slaves, Jesus' servants, Jesus co-workers, Jesus' friends, and even Jesus' brothers and sisters. Since the plural form of each of these is used, it is correct then for me to say, "I am Jesus' slave, servant, co-worker," etc.

But the New Testament never calls Christians Jesus' fiancees or his brides. Instead, it is the Church collectively, and only the Church as a whole, that relates to Jesus this way - just as individual Israelites did not relate to Yhwh as so many spouses, but only the nation of Israel as nation was his beloved bride.

So I'm not singing to Jesus that I'm in love with him, because I'm not. I love him, and I aspire to loving him with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength. But I do not aspire to being in love with him, and I'm sure he understands.

I wish our worship leaders and songwriters did, too.

Not sure if I agree completely with this article, but I found it to be an interesting perspective.

From where I'm standing, I am in love with Him. Certainly not like with my wife, but I have no problem stating that I am in love with Jesus. I know what I mean and I don't mean that He is my boyfriend. That's just weird! I don't recall any songs we sing that are "boyfriend" songs. :D

Me neither, but some of those he listed I don't see anything wrong with. It's just not a style we sing much.

Some songs are sappy. Some people are just sappy. LOL!!!! Sappy people like sappy songs. It's a personality thing!!! :)

Also, the whole superior "vertical worship" trend is partly to blame. Folks are trying so hard to sing TO God, that sometimes it does come across like a cheesy love letter, and forget that it's just fine to sing ABOUT Him, or sing testimony style! :D

There are some songs, though, that I LOVE to sing or listen to when I'm praying. I agree that some songs go too far, but that doesn't mean all worshipful songs are "boyfriend" songs. I don't agree that "in love with Jesus" is inappropriate, either.

My daughter has a friend whose father is an executive with a major Christian recording label. This friend gave my daughter a CD compilation of some of the worst songs submitted for consideration to the label by amateur songwriters hoping for a break.

They were astonishingly bad. This thread made me think of one song in particular that was based on the scriptures that we "die with Christ daily". A big part of the song was a line something like "so KILL ME, KILL ME, KILL ME!!!!!!".

I have no doubt the songwriter was sincere but boy was it bizzare and in bad taste.
