I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
This morning we received word from corporate that there will be no merit increases for FY10 (our fiscal year begins in May). Also, the Executive Committee has decided to take a 5% pay decrease.
I'm just happy to have a job making the same thing I have for the past year. I'm sure others will see the glass half empty, but why? Shouldn't we be motivated and not unmotivated? I know I am. Knowing that layoffs could have been an option and still could be in the future wouldn't it be best to do your best now more than ever so that you are more valuable? I'm just thankful for my job and want to help others see the bright side of this. |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
My company also announced they are foregoing merit pay increases this year. I should know in the next few weeks if I have a job or not!

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
They could have said the entire workforce would have to take a pay decrease or there would be layoffs-- so it could have been worse.
I'd be like you-- and just be thankful for the job. |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
We're not getting any pay increases this year -but we ARE hiring a few new teachers for next school year (this coming Fall). Oh yes, and we're a private school with no federal funding.

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
You most definately have the right perspective.
I too am thankful for my job even though it hasn't given me a raise in 2 yrs. I look at the glass as being 2x's to big. |

They are talking about laying my husband off in April. :thumbsdown He would be the last person they would want to lay off, so I'm hoping and praying some things begin to change. |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
As someone who has found themselves unemployed after working 20 years for my previous employer.... I would have gladly taken no pay raise or even a reduction in work hours as long as I could have kept my job...unfortunately for my company "Catholic Charities" that was not an option they even considered.
So definitely see the glass as half full if you at least have a job no matter what the situation. I've been looking for employment now going on 6 months and there is just nothing out there....:sad |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
You have a glass?!?!

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
I believe you have the right attitude, Renda...
I live in a state this depends heavily on the Big Three. The company I work for is headquartered in Canada and is internationally diverse, but our plant primarily supplies parts to GM, Chrysler, and Ford. Kinda scary at times...I've had one layoff this year, and am not anxious for another one. The main thought in my mind at the time was at least I had the promise of a job to return to. However, anything can change, and without notice. I keep praying for the prosperity of our corporate office, and our local plant in particular, as well as remembering that the Big Three isn't my source. In all of that, knowing that like David, I've never seen the righteous forsaken or His seed begging bread, it is still scary times. There are others far worse off than me for sure... |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
Right way to think Renda...
I thank God everyday that I work in the medical field. I have many extended family members without a job right now. So far, there doesn't seem to be any fear of financial difficulties with our company. It seems there will always be sick people. I was so thankful as they handed out a nice bonus this past Friday along w/pay stub... it was very nice. I was able to purchase a nice car for my daughter to drive...actually it will be a shared car w/her sisters. However, even with the ecomomy around us...there were actually people complaining in this Network that the bonus amount was too small!!??! :crazy some people don't have a clue. I've had those more negative thinking people tell me that with universal health care, my job will change...but I just say "God will provide" if that happens. We just have to learn to trust God through all things. |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
The day my company announced there would be no merit increases and that our bonuses would be about half of normal, the executives all got massive stock grants.

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
We've learned the lesson in being grateful for even having a job three years ago. After Walt's aneurism, the cost for health care for his whole company skyrocketed because they kept him on as an employee. I've talked to the person in charge of that department and know that to be a true fact.
So the fact is that his company could have saved themselves alot of money by just getting rid of him. But they did the right thing and kept him. We will be forever grateful to them - even if there is never another raise ever (there was last year, by the way. But I don't expect one this year. Not with this economy) You've got the right attitude, Renda. Funny how an economy like this causes us to look at things in a much more realistic way, don't you think! |

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
the glass being half-full or half-empty....depends on if you are drinking or pouring. i tell those who think it is half-empty...stop drinking and start pouring. i am about to see the reality of it....my current position will be liquidated in about 4 months.

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
We are living in turbulent times! The systems we have depended on for so many years in this country are broken and I do not know if they can be fixed! But I do know this one thing we serve a faithful God- who does not break his promises.

Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
I agree, the glass is 1/2 full.
I have a job and no lay offs. I would not be surprised to see hours cut...........but nothing changed so far. Psalm 37:25 I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread. |

When my husband was diagnosed with cancer, they not only gave him a leave of absence, but his co-workers donated PTO time so he wouldn't have to go without pay. He got more than the 6 weeks he was off! We are ever grateful. People can be very kind. |
Re: I Choose to See The Glass Half Full
"...My cup runneth over"
I admire the faith and optimism of all my friends who have posted here. My faith is made strong by your determination to trust God in spite of the circumstances. However, maybe we should see the glass as FULL rather than just half full. Our cups, as it were, are in the Lord's hands, and in Him is the FULLNESS of all we need. Paul said that "it is in Him (Jesus) that we live, move and have our being". God promises to meet out every need and, when we have faith that He has all things in His hand, we can ".... come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Hbr 4:16 The "fervent, effectual prayer" of the righteous that James speaks of in 5:16 must meet certain conditions. Those conditions are scattered thru out the Bible: Jhn 14:13 And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. Jam 1:6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 1Jo 5:14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: When those conditions are met, we can trust the Lord to fulfill His promise to supply our every need. So... as long as we allow Him to maintain control, our cups are not only FULL, but they run over. This may be my way of "whistling as I pass a graveyard" as, yesterday, I was handed my check at work and was told not to report back until further notice. Could be the rest of this week, or it could be permanent. We just don't know yet. I did go for another interview Monday for a job closer to home and, with benefits. So, please pray with me,, with faith and in Jesus Name, that His will be done. Thank you all for the faith building posts. God has not failed us yet, and He's not about to now! |
