Obama Thanks Himself In Teleprompter Meltdown

LOL!!!! Check out the news article I am pasting a link to below. A teleprompter malfunction caused President Obama to thank himself and the Irish Prime Minister to read word for word a speech Obama had just given.

One of my (over-exuberant young Omaba fan) employees was SHOCKED to find out that he used a TelePrompter for his speeches.

She actually thought he was speaking from his heart and memory. She was bragging about how awesome he always did when he spoke. I meekly asked, "you do know he reads his speeches, right?" She didn't know.

That is so funny. If he's so brilliant, why can't he memorize his speeches, or speak from cue cards?

Re: Obama Thanks Himself In Teleprompter Meltdown

It sounds to me like Obama was being very kind and gracious to the Irish Prime Minister by pretending to read a speech that the Irish PM should have given if the teleprompter had put up the appropriate speech. He was making light of an embarrassing situation.

Quote:

But Cowen was 20 seconds into his second address when it dawned on him that he was giving word for word the speech that Obama had just read from the same teleprompter.

Cowen stopped and looked back at the president to say, "That's your speech."

Obama laughed and returned to the podium to offer what might have been Cowen's remarks. In doing so, President Obama thanked President Obama for inviting everyone over.

He is famous for his attachement to the teleprompter. One speech he gave in colorado at a rodeo made it look wierd to the locals to have a teleprompter in the arena. Of course the cameras are required to not show it.

Actually the cameras always show it if you know what you are looking for. The only thing you see is rectangular piees of glass on a stand placed directly in front of the speaker (or mounted on a center camera) and then on the left and right (minimum of 3 total).

Only persons looking from the perspective of the speaker using the teleprompter sees the writing scrolling across it from a computer. From the opposite side of the glass you just see through the glass.

If you have a close up camera, you can have it mounted on the camera. Every one sees the stand that supports the teleprompter.

Obama's safety net: the TelePrompter

Thu Mar 5, 1:04 pm ET

The textbook-sized panes of glass holding the president’s prepared remarks follow him wherever he speaks.

Resting on top of a tall, narrow pole, they flank his podium during speeches in the White House’s stately parlors. They stood next to him on the floor of a manufacturing plant in Indiana as he pitched his economic stimulus plan. They traveled to the Department of Transportation this week and were in the Capitol Rotunda last month when he paid tribute to Abraham Lincoln in six-minute prepared remarks.

I love it! After hearing all the trash about Bush being an idiot and buffoon and Obama being so eloquent and smart, especially right up to and after the election, it's fun to remind all Obama's brain-dead supporters of his lifeline attachment to the teleprompters.

Question ... was this on Letterman? Hey Letterman, could we have a little bipartisan ribbing and include Obama with your segment "Great Moments in Presidential Speeches" or whatever it was called in which you just loved to rip Bush apart with.

I haven't watched late night tv lately, so I'm not sure ... are they equal opportunity bashers ... or do they just like red meat?

Here's a great website from DrudgeReport.com Barack's Teleprompter Blog

The vast majority of public speakers these days use them in public speeches. I don't find it nearly as shocking as many apparently do.

Of course now he can blame the teleprompter.

There are tons of videos on youtube for example where people prank newscasters, for example, who are reading something verbatim by inserting something completely nonsensical and having them read it in the flow. Either way, my point has never been that Obama is pure, Holy, and above reproach, but that no politician is. Until we get this through our skulls, we will continue to be sold up the river and have our conservative ideals trampled by Republican and Democrats alike.

However, I've pretty much raised the white flag on this forum and pretty much stay away from the political talk.

This is what I've found written about the incident. It really doesn't read much like an incident at all:

During his second address, however, Prime Minister Cowen started speaking words that were more likely to come from President Obama. That was due to the fact that the teleprompter was showing the words from Obama's speech, given prior to Cowen's address.

Obama had to deflect the gaffe by coming up and reading from his speech again. Trying to act as Prime Minister Cowen, Obama thanked himself as Cowen for inviting everyone to the White House.

I don't find it shocking that he uses a teleprompter, I just think it's odd that he's touted as such a great speaker.... I guess a lot of that is delivery, and I'll give him that. He does have a good delivery. But what bugs me is that without his prompter, he rarely gives a good speech at all. He says 'uh' constantly. To me, someone who is a dynamic speaker should be able to do well even without a prompter.

Criticizing over teleprompters? Every President we've had has used teleprompters. What strikes me is that Bush couldn't get it right even with a teleprompter. At least we know Obama can read. lol

Re: Obama Thanks Himself In Teleprompter Meltdown

Here is a write-up describing what happened. If this is actually accurate a.) it was a gaffe by the Irish Prime Minister and b.) this thread is off by miles. I must be missing something. Are we so desperate to make him look bad that we resort to this?

The president was appearing with Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen. Obama just got done with his remarks (using the teleprompter) and Cowen got up to deliver his speech (also on the teleprompter).

Problem was, Cowen’s speech wasn’t there. The one Obama just got done delivering was still on it.

Made no matter to the Irish PM. Like a zombie he just started reading the words.

“We begin by welcoming today a strong friend of the United States,” Cowen began welcoming himself.

And he kept going. About 20 seconds later, it appeared to Cowen that he was repeating everything Obama just said.

“That’s your speech,” a startled Cowen said to Obama.

“Why don’t these things work for me? Who said these things were idiot-proof?” Cowen muttered (we’re assuming that was not on the teleprompter).

Ba-doom-ba

Not missing a beat, when President Obama returned to the podium he returned the favor.

“First, I’d like to say thank you to President Obama,” Obama said to much laughter.

Sounds like the goof-up was on the part of whoever boots the teleprompter along.

Re: Obama Thanks Himself In Teleprompter Meltdown

The first appearance by a sitting president on “The Tonight Show” may well end up being the last.

President Obama, in his taping with Jay Leno Thursday afternoon, attempted to yuk it up with the funnyman, and ended up insulting the disabled.

Towards the end of his approximately 40-minute appearance, the president talked about how he’s gotten better at bowling and has been practicing in the White House bowling alley.

He bowled a 129, the president said.

“That’s very good, Mr. President,” Leno said sarcastically.

It’s “like the Special Olympics or something,” the president said.

When asked about the remark, the White House said the president did not intend to offend.

“The president made an off-hand remark making fun of his own bowling that was in no way intended to disparage the Special Olympics,” White House deputy press secretary Bill Burton said.

So let me get this straight ....

Dumbo ... in an attempt to make fun of his own bowling, used the Special Olympics as the prop ....

YET, he didn't intend to disparage the Special Olympics...

Errr ... Eh?

If W were to have said that, he would've been hung upside down and burned in effigy.

And journalists say they're not biased or politically motivated....
