Costume dispute!!!!
I'm in charge of sewing and preparing the costumes for our Easter program. I've been doing costumes for years and I have a question. The Director and I are not arguing, just discussing, for the record. :D
Background: I like to be historically accurate when I prepare a costume. The play is a narration, some script and a musical. We have one part where the women, taken in adultery, is thrown at Jesus' feet. Problem: The Director wants me to shorten the women's sleeves because she wants her to have bling, bling showing on her wrists. I don't have a problem with that, but I'm not in agreement with the shortened sleeves. In John 8:3 the Scribes and Pharisees bring her to Jesus quoting Moses's law - that bears out that she is a Hebrew. She is saying that this is Mary Magdelene in Luke 8:2 and I don't believe it is the same woman. I don't think just because she committed adultery that she was a Hoochie Mama. LOL! I think she would dress as the Hebrews dressed. I don't see her as adopting the dress of the Romans or Greeks, per se. So, would you shorten the sleeves or leave them long? I have to do what the Director wants, but this just bugs me! |

*cough* However, that aside, I'm more interested in the "bling" they want her to wear than the shortened sleeves. |
Re: Costume dispute!!!!
Like the bling bling on Rebecca's arms?

I think if there is any way to find out what she had on at that time thats what the costume should look like.

Re: Costume dispute!!!!
Does the director want her hair shorn too?
I think most make that role look "slutty" to make the point. The sleeves could be below her elbow and still reveal bling on her wrist. Or even if the sleeves are long if they are full they will reveal the bling when she moves her arms. |

I think that would be more appropriate. |
Re: Costume dispute!!!!
Okay, drama is all about creating impressions on the audience, and if you want to create the idea that she was an adulterous woman, e.g., at least something of a hoochie mama, then I sort of agree with the director.
However, she wasn't a prostitute--she was caught in adultery. So I agree that she probably just dressed normally. I think the look would be better achieved if she wore something that looked like an under-dress without the robes and mantles that went over their clothing (all the draping), and bare feet. (Like she was just pulled out of bed) |

She already has a full headdress we purchased at a costume place in Austin on Monday. I am totally against that too! I made a handband with coins - she should be wearing that!!! She's Hebrew!!! The women that holds the bowl for Pontius Pilate should have the headdress! I am very annoyed, but pretending that I am not!! She said, "I don't want to be historically accurate." :thwak |

Re: Costume dispute!!!!
Alert for the Director....
Women who wear skirts to the knees, sleeves to the wrists and hair to their knees commit adultery too. |

Re: Costume dispute!!!!
For two years in a row, the young men who played "Legion" in our Easter Drama left the church and went down very WAYWARD paths.
So we did away with that scene. Then the next two years, the young ladies who were "caught in the act of adultery" ended up pregnant out of wedlock. And one of our Judases betrayed our pastor the following year. Weird??? BE CAREFUL what roles you play in the Easter Drama!!! |
Re: Costume dispute!!!!
I vote for the night-wear look with a sheet wrapped around her. THAT would show what God did for her more than some bangles on her wrist.

Make a band of elastic and pull the sleeve up over the elastic to hide it (don't sew it on the material) - that way she gets the shorter sleeve and you save the costume to be used again with long sleeves. |
