Signs Wonders And Knowing Jesus

Hi all,

What is the meaning of signs and wonders to the Christian? Most of what we hear now seems to be downplaying them. Several decades of false prophets and sinning preachers have discouraged the people.

Yet the Bible is overwhelmingly positive on this matter. Many say "seek the giver not the gift". Well that is true but If one seeks Jesus Christ how will they know when they have FOUND HIM?

Is it not because he MANIFESTS HIMSELF by some sign or wonder? He normally does not visibly appear and begin speaking to us does he? So for us to have a personal CONTACT with the Lord he must do something we can recognize as HIM speaking to us or influencing us in some way.

I believe signs are VERY important in our lives because it is the evidence that Christ is alive and active in our lives.

17 And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;
18 They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. Mark 16:17-18

Jesus said signs would be in the lives of those who believe. These signs are not limited to the ones mentioned in Marks gospel. Think about the Old Testament people. Almost if not all the people mentioned as major figures knew God through the signs he did.

Really how else can one have a personal relationship with Jesus if he never MANIFESTS himself? Reading the Bible is wonderful. It creates faith. And by faith the Spirit uses the doctrine and stories to speak to us.

But one theme of scripture FROM COVER TO COVER is that if we seek the Lord we will find him for ourselves. It would be unthinkable that a man or woman of faith would seek God in sincerity of heart and he would not respond. Only when we do hear from Heaven can our soul be satisfied. Only then can we rest in biblical truth because it is being vindicated on a personal level.

No dont seek signs just as something to be amused by. Seek the Almighty God-Jesus with all your heart. He is alive and DOES hear the cries of men for fellowship. Dont let your faith be limited by the doctrines of men or your own doubts. The joy of the Lord comes from knowing that you know HIM!

No offence but all one does here is speak in tongues..

Plus after corithians where did these signs and wonders go no k=more healings were taking place no tongues ETC..

See the way I see it is people then needed signs and maricles/wonders (sp) to prove that jesus was who he was in that time we have the bible now to tell us all this and the bible is not even in order to how things happened back then..

Yet, how can you know that the Bible is true without "signs" (and I'm willing to be rather open ended about "signs)."

The Bible is a testimony of those who were declaring the Gospel in the first century (NT). If "signs" were needed in the first century to validate that testimony, would not "signs" be needed today to validate the exact same testimony from the exact same people?

Re: Signs Wonders And Knowing Jesus

No because they did not have a bible in the NT they needed these signs and wonders cause people did not believe. We have a book that tells how it all went down we do not need signs and maricles we have the written word of god which they did not have then. If we still had apostotles running around we would not have a bible to read and they would still be performing there signs and maricles to prove to us the god is who he is....

But the whole concept of the New Covenant is that we would KNOW THE LORD. Do you feel like you know him after reading the Bible? I would say you may know ABOUT HIM but to know him takes a personal contact.

If the New Covenant is better than the Old why would we not be able to know Elohim? They apparently did in those days at least the ones the Tanak features such as Noah, Abraham, Jacob, Moses, Joshua, David, Solomon, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and so on.

Why would Elohim now become silent?

Why do you say to know him takes personal contact know one will have personal contact with him until the rapture and we are in heaven.. after Jesus accended into heaven the apostoles did not have personal contact with him.....

What Church or Religous community influences your thinking? I have had personal contact with Yeshua since 1974. Are you saying you have had no personal relationship with him ever?

Ok but I am talking about HOW can man have a personal relationship with Yeshua the Messiah apart from him revealing or manifesting himself to him?

Is ones faith in the written word of Elohim never to be vindicated by personal visitations of him?

They (signs and wonders) aren't doing a good job of proving the Bible. It's like Aaron's rod turning into a snake. Pharaoh's magicians did the same thing. Ah, but Aaron's snake ate them up, you say? Sure. Aaron was a better illusionist than they were. So? Maybe with some practice, they can get their snakes can start eating things, too.

Today, we have nifty signs and wonders like people standing up from wheelchairs, tongues, prophecies and words of knowledge, people falling down at the alter (wow!), etc. All of which can easily be duplicated by "Pharaoh's magicians" (such as Hindus and Mormons). Show me an amputee growing a new leg. That would be good, for starters. (But if a Hindu accomplishes something like that, some would say it's just the devil's counterfeit. Sigh.)

Timmy....just because someone can make a fake $100 doesn't mean that real ones don't exsist. I agree that there are plenty of fakes in and out of the church...but that does not mean that everyone/everything is a fake.

What about the miracles in the New Testament?....are they fake as well? Christ resurrection...fake?...St.Paul's survival from a deadly snake bite...fake?

Have you ever personally witnessed a super-natural event?

You have tremendous faith!!

You place your faith and trust in a book that has been copied and rewritten many times in different languages...that none of the orginal manuscriptes exsist...and you still place the care of your eternal soul to its teachings.

And yet you think it is too much to believe in the super-natural.

That we can read a book, have faith it is correct and find salvation there....but cannot communicate with the author?

Slow down for a moment... What is the difference between having Saint Peter show up on your doorstep with an incredible story about the "resurrection from the dead," and reading the same words of Saint Peter in Acts 2 more almost 2,000 years later?

You're saying that it's more believable to read a 2,000 year old book than it is to interview and question the primary sources responsible for that book?

Your "reasoning" appears to negate the Bible altogether, and I don't think that's even your intention.

Re: Signs Wonders And Knowing Jesus

Sure its true false prophets and preachers are highly visible today. My purpose however is to ENCOURAGE Saints to seek for personal favor from the Lord. Just because skeptics reject these things does not mean they are right.

The Bible itself is where we get faith that brings about PERSONAL FELLOWSHIP with Yeshua.

8: Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. James 4:8

We should desire a CLOSE WALK with Elohim. Something more than just reading about how close Noah walked with him. Or how close he was to Paul. His desire is to make himself KNOWN to the believer.

When he does that it is THROUGH some sign or wonder.

It may be an answered prayer. It may be a dream or vision that comes to pass. It may be some leading of his Spirit. If there is flat out nothing thats not good.

6: But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Heb. 11:6

Reading the Bible can help us to believe that HE IS. But the other and personal to us part of the equasion is that we MUST BELIEVE he is a rewarder of the one who diligently seek him.

In other words we want him to show us favor.

The word "grace" just means favor. If there is no favor from Elohim in ones life that means they are not in his grace.

so you do not believe that the O.T. is the written word of god...because they had it back then.

If I read this correctly...you believe that super-natural events were only there to prove who god is....but are not here today because we have a book that proves who he is? Wouldn't this book by its very nature....be super-natural?

you also mention apostoles...how do we know they are no longer around? we still have evangelist, pastors...does the church need less edifying?

not true friend. Jesus makes several appearances in books that are not included in the canon.

How do people...who have never read a Bible know god?

Please dont think I am downplaying the Bible. It is our foundation. The source of our hope. There we learn about the ways of YHWH. I also encourage people to read it daily. Memorize it. Give your life to what is written therein.

Yet I must believe if one does that he WILL be contacted by the Author.

You said the Bible is how we know OF HIM. True enough.

But you can also KNOW HIM.

As many as are led by the Spirit are the Sons of God.

not sure about the salvational steps.

the name "Jesus" is used in less than half of the bible...so is all the rest not needed?

the Biblical narrative is so much more than just an introduction to the son of god....it contains science, literature, mathamatics, poetry, history, and yes the most complete writings about a man named Jesus. So to state that Jesus is the only reason to read/need the Bible....I believe sells it far to short.

And yes....I have met people who worshiped the true God from a true heart...and had never read the New Testament.

understood.

but this could not happen...per the scripture...as every nation must be told before his return. so if we never heard...he would never return.

I honestly do not think God would go through all the trouble making sure all of the messianic prophecies are fulfilled....only to let the story "die"...due to lack of interest or missing documents. He has proven to be very creative...one might even say super-natural.:)

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

King James Version

Let God's word answer your questions.

True. But does that logic apply to leprechauns, too? ;)

My point is this: I don't think God would use something to "prove" His "Word" is true that, well, doesn't actually prove it!

I'd have no way of knowing. That close call on the highway could have been supernatural, or just good driving skills, or just luck. (And when things don't go so well, and there is a wreck, that could be God letting it happen for some reason, or it could be bad driving skills, or bad luck.) That girl on the Benny Hinn show rising to her feet from her wheelchair could have been supernatural, or just excitement and expectations and adrenaline. (And when her legs got all wobbly and Benny zapped her and she went to the floor, that could have been supernatural, too. Sure. Why not?)

I'm seriously, Bro. You spend waaaayyyy too much time watching Benny Hinn on television. You should get out more, meet people, go on a date and take up bowling or yard darts.

Actually, I haven't watched the Benny Show in several years. That one stuck in my mind. Nearly made me sick.
