Do Your Kids Dress Like Bankers?

I'm just wondering. When your teenage boys go to youth convention, do they dress like bankers?

Why do we make our kids dress like that for conventions and camps?

Silliness!

I think they'd have better attendance if they advertised convention as dress casual.

Dumb thing is, we expect them to dress that way at summer camp as well.

It's 95-100 degrees in the summer, and we still expect our kids to wear suits, ties and dress shoes.

I don't get it.

That's the way Jesus and the Apostles dressed
so we have to dress that way too.
Anything less is disrespectful to the House of God
and is unholy and on a slippery slope.

Weren't you told you need to give/bring/wear your best for God? God wants your best, including clothes.

Seriously?

Do you really think folks view that as a standard, and a tradition?

I've heard this said over the pulpit in the last three months. God looks on the heart.

Can't say I remember any of the NT writers telling us how to dress when the church gathers together to worship God. Must be a tradition or custom of man.

The last time we let my son go to camp it was his last time...2 hours of the kids running around the auditorium (in the spirit)then the preaching after the extreamly loud music...

This funny because we just went and bought all 3 or our sons suits! They all are so excited to wear them, when we brought them home they couldn't WAIT to put them on.

We got them for Easter, I guess we still have some old school in us.

But I will tell you that for the last few years or so, they usually dress pretty casual to church.

Dressing up for Easter or church? I am totally kewl with that. I just bought a new three piece.

But folks should get over thinking it's a required or "holy" thing.

Re: Do Your Kids Dress Like Bankers?

I don't think all customs or traditions of men are necessarily bad. I think dressing up for church is just that - a custom. Certainly has nothing to do with salvation.

If a church has a tradition of dressing up, whatever. As long as you don't make anyone feel badly who doesn't. Most churches I've been in are fairly balanced with this. It hasn't been a big deal.

It's been customary in America to have different dress codes for different places. You don't dress in the same way when you go to the park as you would to go to a dinner at a five-star restaurant. Church has traditionally been one of the 'dress-up' places. I don't think that's a horrible thing.

Re: Do Your Kids Dress Like Bankers?

My son will be dressed like a banker this coming Sunday, in a brand new suit--and he will look oh so cute in it! AND, he's proud as punch to be wearing it. ;)

There is NOTHING wrong with dressing up. If someone wants to go casual, there's nothing wrong with that either. :)

Some kids enjoy it, some don't. I say let them dress up if they want to (camp or anywhere), and if they don't, let them wear neat, clean casual clothes.

By the way, bankers aren't the only sharp dressers. My son dresses like his Daddy. And my girls dress like their mother. And grandmother. And aunts.

I seem to recall that the virtuous woman in Proverbs 31 clothed her family in fine clothing. ;)

Thank you, Abigail. I had to walk away from the computer before I responded. lol

We have a young woman that is new to our church. She is very heavy set, but has a pretty face. When she first started attending she would hardly look you in the face. One day she showed up in a very feminine outfit with black beaded slip on shoes. I don't know how she walked in them, BUT she wanted so badly to feel like a lady!!! She received the Holy Ghost a couple of Sundays ago. There is such a difference in her appearance now - she is so happy.

I was raised to dress up when I came into God's house. :thumbsup

I am one for dressing up, completely. Keith loves a brand new suit and I love brand new...well everything.

The last few years have been hard for us to buy brand new church clothes all the time, it's easy when you are an adult you can wear what you already have. (To be completely honest though, Keith's mom bought the boys suits this year)

But for kids, it can be a bit expensive when they are constantly growing, to keep them in nice new church duds.

Anyway the statement above reminds me of something my mom used to say about clothes, she would say it doesn't need to be new and expensive but clean and pressed.

So at least if I can not afford the new, I try to make sure their clothes are clean and their shirts are pressed. (teeth brushed combed hair!)

Nothing wrong with that!

I'll have you to know, Baron, that I LIKE dressing up. :) I look for excuses to wear fabulous clothes!!! :D Recently our pastor gave us permission to be slightly more casual on Sunday mornings--and I plan to ignore it completely. I'm a girly girl, and wearing pretty dresses and heels just plain ol' makes me happy! :girlnails

My two daughters are complete opposites--the youngest has always liked to wear frilly clothes, but the oldest shuns all forms of ruffles and lace. Still, of late, Hannah has taken to wearing heels and dressing up in a sleek, classy style (still with no lace or frills).

People are different--some like to dress up, some don't. I think it's nice to dress up and be clean and shiny when we go to church--but I hope no one is so silly to believe it is a requirement. It would be just as silly a conclusion to label those who dress up as shallow or judgmental because they choose dressier clothing.

For that matter, I've seen the casual dressers criticize those who dress to the nines as being vain, and dressy dressers criticize those who go casual as not taking God seriously. Neither criticism is necessary or accurate. :coffee2

Bottom line: This is such an unimportant issue, that it should be left to individuals and families with no harsh criticism in either direction.

Liz,
This is very awesome. When our son was around 6 years old my husband had been laid off from his job. I said, "God, I need some black, khaki and navy pants for our son."

The very next Sunday morning, a lady in church handed me a pair of black, khaki and navy pants in the exact size for our son! She said, "I had these and thought you might want them." :thumbsup

I also remember a time when I told the Lord that I needed a new wardrobe of clothing. Shortly, a friend of mine. who had a wealthy MIL, brought a huge box of new clothes to me. She said, "I thought you might like these." :thumbsup

So, if I don't have the money - I do have a prayer! :thumbsup

Does fine clothing mean dress clothes exclusively? There are nice casual clothes, including jeans ...

Yep! Me, too! I own about 30 pairs of heels, and the collection continues to grow! :D I also love beautiful clothes.

And I don't think it kills my teen boys to wear suits. Doesn't hurt them to spiff up once a week. They slop around in jeans with holes in them the rest of the week.

But of course, once again, it has nothing to do with what God requires or even expects. It's just our current custom.

Well, I'm not a girly girl as I'm more comfortable in a suit, but I do like dressing up! And do look for occasion to do that. I love when we are driving to church and my husband says, "You know, you are still a nice looking woman." :thumbsup

Very silly, indeed! Most of the boys and girls I know LOVE to dress up for camp and other functions.

That is so true! I love this BTW, great story to share with the ladies!

Amazing things happen when we choose to pray! =)

But I was raised to always dress up for church, unfortunately I see this trend dying.

But like you said above about the new convert who dressed up for church, it was like a boost to her self confidence.

For some it's like a shot in the arm to their self dignity.

Yes, I certainly did, Subby! Another time my husband was laid off. We lived on a country road and I loved to walk in the mornings. I told the Lord I needed some new walking shoes. About a mile from our house. on the side of the road, in the middle of nowhere, was a pair of Reebok walking shoes in my size!

I brought them home and set them on the dryer. They were still a little wet from the dew. My husband walked by and said, "Where did you get those tennis shoes?"

Yes, I am sad to see the church looking like a concert in the park, JMO.

And, YES, women need some self-confidence and a normal women just wants to feel like a lady. She wants acceptance. She wants healing from a wounded heart.

It is so beautiful to see this woman, in our church, changing.

Well, I expected to have money come my way, but He sent the shoes instead. LOL! I may have felt guilty, as my husband was laid off, and not bought a brand that I like - so - God made sure that I got what I wanted! :thumbsup

During that same time our washing machine broke down. Before we started school, I told my daughter that I wanted to pray that God would get us a new washing machine.

The very next day my MIL called and first thing she said, "Do ya'll need a new washing machine."

I said, "WHAT?!!!!"

She got a little irritated and repeated herself. LOL!

She had washed a knee-high in her washer and they thought it was broken, went and bought a new one, hooked it up and used it. Later, my husband's father looked closer to see what was wrong with their washer. Too late to take the newest one back, so they called to see if we wanted it. I think God did that for me! :D

Re: Do Your Kids Dress Like Bankers?

Pentecostal churches are one of the few churches left where the men are kind of expected to wear suits!

I always had a problem trying to figure it out. On one hand it is a sin to wear anything that enhances your appearance (jewelry, rings, etc.), and then they turn around and dress to the nines for church and conferences. Go figure!

I felt guilty at first for not wearing a suit to church, but now I'm totally comfortable.

I dress business casual for work, so my church attire is the same as my work attire. I don't dress for church like I'm ready to go to the park and play with my grandchildren!
