Far be it from me to question Warren Buffett of all people. I'll let some of you other financial experts on here debate with the Oracle of Omaha.

He certainly hasn't endorsed everything Obama's done, but he thinks he's taking necessary steps to avert the disaster of September and it's lingering effects.

I heard from a retiree from Chrysler. He was a union employee for about 40 years. He has been retired for several years. He was all bent out of shape because, as he understood it, with Chrysler's filing bankrupty, the pensioners will lose:
dental benefits
vision benefits
medical copay
bonuses

He was not happy at all.

Data indicates that what destroyed the economy is greed. Greed is when you want something you cannot afford so you borrow more than you can pay to have it. Greed is when a greedy person loans money that belongs to someone else (aka pension funds) to other greedy people to buy things they well cannot afford at excessive interest knowing full well, with data in front of them, that the chances of getting that money paid back to the people you borrowed the money from in the first place are statistically lower. Greed is when you invest, then leverage the value of the initial investment to re-invest, with intention to double the return. Greed is when the investment is made in something that has inflated value from the greedy fellow investors. Greed is using money you do not have to take and buy things that do not belong to you nor did you earn them.

The bubble of greed started in the 80's. Movies were made about it. It was pointed out for years. Now the margin calls are in, the loans are due, the values are adjusted to actual rather than inflated, and the greedy are whining and blaming someone who has been in government office less than (4) months for activities that have been going on and building up to this for years. The words "america" and "greed" and "consume" have been put into the same sentence for years. Now suck it up. You have nobody to blame but yourselves. Want sympathy? Borrow some more imaginary paper money from each other and buy some. Eventually you will be able to invest in "sympathy options" and "sympathy futures" that will then artificially drive up the costs of purchased sympathy. Said investments, sadly, will probably be offered by the greedy along with other interesting markets like "carbon footprint credits" and others of imaginary value.

Now ima go watch "flip that house" to see if I can "add" $10,000 "value" by making $500 improvements on my bathroom (laughing). Looks to be a busy day.

It appears your sources do not come from the recipients. It is a published fact that Saudi, with 1/10th the population of the US, consistently ranks 2nd in the world in annual humanitarian and direct donations to developing countries. These have historically been in the form of "block grants" but because it is mis-used last year the Saudi Government initiated a "watchdog group" to monitor them. Your source is from an article asking the US and European countries to pony up less than 1% of their GNP. The article does not ask Arab countries because the requestors do not have to. The Arab Gulf States here already pony up.

So, a country with population 304MM with (how many times per capita income?) contributed 4X the amount of a country with population 26MM. These numbers carry all the way back to the 1970's and indeed Saudi aid has reached up to 4% of the GNP where the US languishes somewhere back in the .3-.4% range. American "aid" is generally military in nature and we have discussed that in another forum (re-thanking you for the Osamas of the world) Yet Americans feel that they are the "most generous country".
The fact that this is money that you did not have in the first place does not stun me either. The US is listed because the US lists itself. Saudi is listed only here and there because the recipients list it for them. Aid convoys to the people of Iraq leave here ALL THE TIME. Just because you do not acknowledge them does not mean they do not exist.

Filling the coffers of wealthy, hair-sprayed preachers for a tax write-off does not make you good people. It only helps you sleep better at night.

America is my country too.

MY return recommendation is trade "generous" for "greedy" then sleep in those beds you made in the houses of inflated value you borrowed money from the pensions of working people to buy. You can sneer all you want when working people have to leave to have a better life. Neither your sneer nor the opinion behind it changes the outcome one whit. Over 1 in 10 in America itself live in poverty. That says much about your generosity.

What would impress me is if the Saudis were to up and treat their women like people instead of property. 1 in ten in the US may live in poverty, but 1 in 2 in Saudi Arabia live in oppression and bondage. Bad choice of examples.

Besides, all the dollars in the kingdom belongs to the royal family. I could be a Saudi prince for a day or two...

Most everyone else there doesn't own anything but sand while the king and his soak up what is underneath it.

Gee I live here. I do not see this at all. All my co-workers have their own homes. What's weird is that they do NOT have mortgages. Different banking system. Fee-based. An eye-opener for me. But - maybe you know something I do not. Something besides how to apply an even shiny coat of hairspray or tuck your belly behind your belt for church. You probably "heard about" or "read about' something, right? The cure for ignorance is travel. If you can afford it, someday, after all your credit cards are paid and stuff, why don't you VISIT sometime then go home and write about what you experience rather than re-write something someone else (who has also probably not travelled either) talked about.

I am american, and i can state with flat up fact that fewer numbers of saudi women are mistreated here than those who are beat up, raped, and murdered every year in the US. In fact, I know none. I have not seen, read about, or heard about a single murder here since I came. Weird. I know a LOT of saudis. They DOTE on their wives. Very strong, proud families. On the other hand, most of those living in poverty there in the US are women. Re-recommend that you address this issue at home before patting your own backs as 'generous' and then looking overseas for strangers to example as "worse than me so I can sleep peacefully in my mortgaged home under my credit budget".

BTW, I grew up in Egypt and don't have any debt (that is deliberate).

I agree with you in some area's.

1. That our country is run by a bunch of useless, thieving morons from corporate offices to the White House. Has been for quite awhile. I typically vote the constitutionalist ticket.
2. That most of the problems we have in the Middle east exist because the aforementioned morons can't seem to get a grip on the fact that America was in part founded on the principle of not meddling in other country's business.

I grew up in the US and was a full part of the culture reflected by the posts here. The cultural differences are discussed at length here and on other parts of this forum. The difference between what I see and observe and what I read here and in other places amaze me sometimes. It is easy to brush off opinions from those who tolerate 16,000 murders a year on their own streets and spend so much time, energy, and resources searching for bits and pieces of information to prove how great they are or how right they are or how much better they have it. I will not embrace the "lifestyle of debt and greed" ever again. No matter how patriotic that lifestyle "appears to be". There is nothing, in my mind, to vote for. No matter who is on the ticket I know for sure that by the time they finish their job in their elected office I, my children, and now my grandchildren will somehow be additionally robbed.

It sounds like Saudi has opened up quite a bit. We almost moved there in 1975, at the time all the expat oilfield people had to live in isolated compounds and weren't allowed much contact with the people.

My observations aren't all just from propaganda, Sharia law can be really harsh on women, and Wahhabi's are so strict that their standards would make even the most conservative Apostolic shriek. I grew up around Sunni's, and they were good Sunni's like I was a good catholic. Funny though that religion was never a thing to come between friends.

As for Obama wrecking the economy? It was wrecked before he took the helm. But like someone said above, I find the man very very frightening.

If it wasn't for ministry calling and such I would possibly embrace the expat lifestyle once again, possibly never to return. Unlike all my neighbors I am not tied down by a mountain of debt. Don't have much, but I am free, and that is priceless to me. Even if the day job was to go away tomorrow it would pinch, but me and mine wouldn't be in a tent and dining at the soup kitchen over it.

To be honest about all I love about the USA today is the landscape and the ideas upon which it was founded. Does that make me a traitor, nope, it makes me a Patriot. Because I believe in the constitution and bill of rights just like it was written, before the yahoos twisted it beyond all recognition. The traitors are in corporate boardrooms, plush offices on wall street, the house of representatives, the senate, the supreme court, with king traitor himself sitting in a funny shaped office at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.

The standards are still the standards. The Mutawwa (religious police) still send expats to the store to buy scarves and still chew out husbands if their wives and daughters dress immodestly. It is not like it was some kind of secret before they arrived so it's hard to drum up sympathy lol. They (we) are guests here after all. My wife dresses the same as she did in the US and her home country so we never get bothered. My Saudi friends really seem to dote on their wives. They normally just "assume" I am christian. The laws are strict about mixed company of singles but that is straight up Islam aka keep your hands and eyes to yourselves until you get married. Pity some form of that can't be taught back home.

Most of the expats buy SUV's and roam the middle east (laughing). Dubai, Bahrain, other places. We're still getting used to the macho highway stuff (are Egyptian drivers just plain crazy like the drivers here?) but we are getting out and about more and more.

Where they (Saudis) really need work is treatment of poorer expats like household help and such. Breaking their contracts, enslaving them, taking their passports, trapping them is not Islam and it not what Islam is about. Recent establishment of a human rights department or some such to deal with these cases is a good first step.

There are cases of mis-application of Sharia law -reference the case where that moron judge allowed the 8-yr-old girl to "marry" to pay her father's debt. There was a lot of anger here about that, she was placed with her mother until things were settled, and last week I heard the court granted a "divorce". That particular case was so far outside Islam and Islamic law that there was not much convincing needed.

Freedom IS priceless. Our number one reason to make the decision to pack it up and leave. Best of luck to you and yours.

Yup. Egyptian cabbies could give NYC cabbies the heebie-jeebies. My mom and I were in a cab when the driver saw a cobra in the road. The guy stopped, rattled off to us to wait, grabbed his non-paying passenger reset tool (big stick) and went out and waged valiant battle with the mighty snake. He finally killed the thing, cut it's head off and threw the body in the trunk.

Got back in the cab, and from what we could translate bbq snake was on the menu for the night.

I miss that place. Alexandria is an awesome city.

Another great place. I didn't get to spend much time there, the Museum of Antiquities is not to be missed. I don't believe they let people go into the pyramids anymore, but I am sure the camel ride around them and the Sphinx is still operating :D

The Cairo Hilton has rooms with views looking at the Pyramids across the Nile, (at least it did in 1974)

Alexandria is nice most all times of the year, breezes coming off the Mediterranean makes it easy to see why the Ptolemy's built their palaces there.

As shocking as this might sound to some but Greed also made our economy one of the most powerful in the world!

Greed makes companies larger....it also helps make more jobs. Greed left without any sort of regulation though is detrimental.

What hurt us was the push to pass out unqualified loans like candy to kids on Halloween, selling those bad loans and corrupt politicians and CEOs like of the Fannie Mae and the other one.

Also what hurt us was the fact that all this was being warned about a LONG time before you know what hit the fan and the powers that be did absolutely nothing but let it ride. It's kinda of like a drunken sailor at a craps table winning 5 times in a row and not walking away and blowing it all on one last roll.

It was not all Bush's fault. His major fault was getting us into two protracted wars at the same time that we are still dealing with and has become a financial burden while being less than a fiscal conservative in other areas of spending.

This financial mess was building on his watch and part of the problem was his man was head of the SEC, but the Democrats are just as guilty in many areas

The most telling thing here is that these Democrats ALL pointed fingers at the regulator. They did this all throughout the Bush presidency to cover their own screwups and corruption and the sad part is they got away with it with the help of the media

I have to agree with you. I will also like to split my remarks between plain speculative greed and good, solid, business building by hard work capitalism. Arguably capitalism can be defined as the positive use of greed. In my view there is a moral and ethical requirement to accurately value things that goes with a free market. Cross those morals and ethics, and undeniably this was done, and you are left with a need for regulation. Which little by little destroys the capitalism that, as you said, made the US economy the greatest in history.
