Bad Weather - Heavenly One Affected

Just received a voice mail from HO and the bad weather has hit in her area and her house has been damaged.

Trying to return her call now.

Talking to her now - she's okay.

Her house is okay, but trees down around it - siding off - shingles off - no electricity.

They weren't home when it happened.

It was straight-line winds.

I am glad it isn't worse, what was it a tornado?

In her area it was straight-line winds (100 mph), but a tornado did hit about 20 miles from her.

Glad she is okay!!!

We've been wondering why the wind had been blowing so strong in our area for three months! We've never had this happen. Not as strong as 100 miles, but we can get anything done outside because the wind won't stop blowing!

Oh no! Straight line winds are NOT FUN. I'm glad she's ok and hope the house is a quick fix up.

Re: Bad Weather - Heavenly One Affected

Straight line winds can be just as damaging as any other nasty summer storm. It's over 30 years but I still have minor panic attacks when there are severe thunderstorms or tornado warnings.

Our storage shed and some contents blew away and we lost a window. We were huddled in the basement and eventually water was running on us so we feared the worst. It was caused by the broken window, but when you're in the dark with strong winds blowing you expect your roof to be gone!
Many neighbors had roof damage and thoughout the city there was lots of damage. We were in a brand new neighborhood so no trees to come down.

Re: Bad Weather - Heavenly One Affected

Thanks for the thoughts and prayers.

The weather reports indicate that an inland hurricane hit this area. The devastation is widespread and is seen everywhere, even now. I have pics of what my area looked like that day, but I'll post them here another day, as I'm working a lot and need to get to bed soon.

What's absolutely amazing is that just one person was killed and only about a hundred injured. The devatated areas pretty much go from the Mississippi River to Evansville, IN and from West Frankfort, IL almost to Paducah, KY. Look it up on a map and you will see how widespread that area is.

LadyRev, my daughter, and I had to climb through brush and trees just to get to my house. I was driving when it hit, and I literally felt that I was driving in a tornado for 30 minutes to get to safety. A large limb hit my van when I went under a falling tree, but the only damage I received was my passenger sideview mirror being destroyed.

We saw large trees just falling over like they were sticks in the grass. Shingles and siding flying off houses, hitting my van, and power lines coming down across the highway as I was driving under them.

Most roads were impassible from falling trees, and my road wasn't clear for three days. Curfews were issued for a few towns that were hardest hit, mine included, and driving downtown after dark was quite eerie when you understand that the entire town was without electricity for three days.

No gas, grocery stores being able to only take cash but having to calculate taxes with a calculator, and lack of supplies like ice and water made life quite surreal. LadyRev and I went to Mt. Vernon to stay there for three nights, and I came back home after taking her to the airport, as I work midnights and sleep all day, so I didn't need electricity, although I had to shower and get dressed at work.

I will try and post pics either later this evening before I leave for work or do it tomorrow morning before I go to bed. The pics don't do justice to the reality of the situation however, but my memory is seared forever. I hope I never go through something like that again.

Thanks again for the thoughts and prayers.

This is the first I've heard of this, because I was out of the country when all this was happening, I guess. I'm so sorry for what you've been through. We've been through that tornado-mess and it's not fun!

Hi, H1, so glad that you survived!...We have had several tornadoes in our area over the past few years. Personally, we had no damage to our property but I lost a very good friend in a tornado a few years ago.

God bless,
TL

Sherri, most people not in the area affected never heard of it either. The news outside this area reported just storms like it was no big deal, but the National Weather Service said it was an inland hurricane. If you saw the radar, it looked exactly like that, and the 100+ MPH winds also proved it.

TV stations were running on generators, and for those without power, some radio stations stopped all programming to take phone calls from people with questions and updates. It was great how everyone pulled together and continue doing so.

Some might think looting would be a problem. Not here. Two guys were caught trying to break into a gas station a few days after the storm. They were caught and bond set at $200,000 and they never even got in the place! The sheriff was on the radio stating that the jail had plenty of room but certainly was no picnic since they had no power, meaning no AC and no hot food! :ursofunny

Cell service is ok now, but for a few days, it was intermittent with calls not going through. Thanks for trying though. I've been pretty busy with working, but I'll call you soon.

Thanks, my friend. I'm also going to be seeing the city attorney to find out if I have any recourse to not paying rent in order to clear the trees off. The owners don't care what this property looks like because they have no money, no insurance, and they are being foreclosed on. Meantime, it's difficult getting out of my driveway because I can't see oncoming traffic because of the tree in my way! In addition, I can't mow or anything because of trees and brush, so I'm going to check out and see what I can do.

However, I will be moving out of here around July 1.

I'd say that under the circumstances you shouldn't have to pay anymore rent at all unless they get the mess cleaned up. I realize that it was an act of God and not your fault, but that's just the point. It was NOT your fault. And they are the homeowners, not you. Good luck with that one.
