Why Do People Sleep Late?

I just wonder about why people sleep late.

I'm not talking your occasional sleep in because of a rough day.

I'm not even talking about sleeping in a little on Saturday morning.

What I'm talking about are those who people who, were they left to their own devices, would sleep until 10am... 11am... noon... 1 pm etc.

Those same people are those who tend to fight sleep to the last dying moment and finally give way to sleep when they can hold out no longer.

At night their take on life is... why go to sleep... it's "early"... there are things to do... fun to be had...

In the morning that same sleep that they struggled with until the wee hours of the morning is now their closest and dearest friend whom they don't want to part with.

This is one mode of thinking that I cannot seem to relate to.

Why do they do it?
Why not rise and greet the day?
Why not go ahead and start that day that they will be struggling to keep going a few hours down the road?

I wish I knew. My 16 year old is one of those people.

Re: Why Do People Sleep Late?

Many people are hard-wired to be night owls. I'm one of those. I feel energetic and productive at midnight, 1 a.m. That's when I do my best work.

I HATE MORNINGS.

In the mornings I'm sluggish, can't think, and want to punch anyone who wants to have a cheery conversation. And no, going to bed earlier doesn't change that. Or 'making' myself get up early. I've gotten up early for years now, but I still feel awful in the mornings. Even if I go to bed at 10 or 11.

For one thing, I can't sleep if I go to bed that early. I'll toss and turn all night.

It's just the way God wired some people. My preferred schedule, if my lifestyle would allow it, would be to go to bed at 3 a.m. and get up around 10 a.m.

(another thing I've discovered in my lifetime is that early birds never understand night owls. Lol. And of course I'm married to an early bird. ;) )

And I'm married to a night owl.

When I wake up in the morning I am ready to turn on all the lights, crank up the music & sing out loud.

When we first got married I would get up in the morning and do just that. I learned quickly that this wasn't kosher in the least.

I can now get up in the morning and quietly go through my little routine and never make a sound.

I am working today but, generally, on Saturdays my son and I head to the next town and go to Lowe's and buy some material to add to, fix or modify something on the property. By the time we get back (usually around noon) the women folk are generally all stirring by then.

It keeps the peace and helps me get things done around the house. :)

Don't begrudge it too much. Teenagers need more sleep than other age groups, even toddlers. :)

One of my best friends is just like you!!! :)

I prefer to get up early, but if I get in bed really late, I sleep late, because I need 7-8 hours of sleep no matter what time I go to bed. I get a lot of work done early in the morning--it's a very productive time for me. My husband is NOT a morning person. He doesn't sleep late, but sometimes I wish he would. :D

If I sleep too much, it actually makes me feel more tired and groggy than if I got too little sleep.

What early birds need to understand about night owls is that sleeping late isn't a sign of laziness anymore than going to bed at 8:30 p.m. is a sign of laziness. :thumbsup

In fact, someone who goes to bed at 8:30 and gets up at 6 is getting 9.5 hours of sleep/night, compared to a night owl who goes to bed at 1 a.m. and gets up at 9 or 10....they're only getting 8-9 hours.

Children need to be on a regular schedule, and as they start getting close to job-working age, they do need to learn how to get up earlier. I remember when I just had Hannah...Jeff would get up at 5 a.m. to get ready for work, so I would cook breakfast, then get Hannah out of bed and put her in my bed. We'd snuggle until about 9, and then get up for the day. I LOVED it.

I don't do that anymore...Jeff has decided he just likes to grab a cereal bar and some coffee, so that makes my life easier.

Am I noticing a trend here?

It appears, so far, to be mostly the women folk who are "hard wired" to sleep late.

As long as household responsibilities are being attended to, I don't see it as a problem. :)

If you have teenagers in the house, their age probably explains their oversleeping better than their gender.

Nope. I can't sleep late anymore because I have 3-year-old, but it is my natural tendency to stay up late and sleep late. Now I stay up late, get up early and not get enough sleep. Fun.

Jeff likes to stay up late--he gets a lot of work done late at night, when it's quiet.

He stays up late, even when he has to get up early, which probably explains his morning grouchiness.

no idea, my internal clock wakes me every day, saturday sunday and holidays within 5 minutes of 5:10 am. Doesn't matter if I go to bed at 9:00 or 11:00. at 5:10 I am awake aware and can't go back to sleep.

My daughter, left alone will sleep until 2:00 pm even if she went to bed at midnight. Weird

I'm one of those people as well. :)

Got to sleep at 2 am last night. Of course I am up earlier this morning trying to tackle a computer problem (and the company related to it -Adobe).

Normally it works out well because neither I nor my wife are early people. We both having waking up and being out the door in 20 minutes on a work day, down to a science.

I have 4, and get them out the door alone. In 20 to 30 minutes. I don't do mornings well either. I'm totally a night owl.

Jeffrey didn't sleep through the night until he was nearly 2! He would sometimes go to bed early, but then wake up around 11 or 12, and stay awake for 2-3 hours before going back to sleep. :sad

I hate to admit it, but he would often end up sleeping with us, because otherwise we got zero sleep! His doctor claimed being in the NICU messed up his inner clock. I don't know if that's true, but we were all miserable for quite some time.

My husband sets his alarm for an hour and a half earlier than he has to leave for work.

I had a temporary job where I had to leave at 4:15 a.m. I set my alarm for 4:00 and was out of the house on time.

To each his own, I guess. :)

Brother Alvear usually goes to bed before I do and gets up long after I do. His body requires more sleep.
So we are all different creatures with different needs...

I have no idea and I'm one of those people. I don't sleep late, but I'll try to fight sleep off like no one's business. On Saturdays though, I usually have to tell my wife to wake me up by 10.

It's a hard habit to break, but I'm slowly doing it.

It might be because in my younger years I work 2nd and 3rd shift, but that has been years ago. For some reason I just can't bring myself to go to bed at 10 pm unless I've had a few really hard days.

Yeah... I'm speaking from the other side of the fence but, to me, it is about how one thinks about things.

In my mind i look at my bedtime in relation to what time I need to get up. So... if I need to get up early then my bed time adjusts to allow for my sleep needs.

It appears that, in the minds of those who love to stay up late and sleep late that the primary point of consideration is how late they want to stay up. They will go without sleep. They will sleep during the day... all else adjusts to allow for their night owl habits.

Now... when my wife went to work I would look around about 9pm and, friend, she was out...

So she says that she is a night owl and would say, as others have, that she is hard wired this way... but when a job made her get up every morning then habits changed.

So... it all seems to be a choice that is made in deference to a preference.

We rarely get to be before midnight -either of us. But my alarm goes off at 6:15, and after hitting the snooze exactly three times (yes, every morning), I get up, shower, and am out the door in 18-20 minutes. My wife takes a few more minutes because she needs to spend some time with the blow dryer, but otherwise does the same thing I do.
Now when were both able to sleep in we usually celebrate by getting to bed around 1 am, then easily sleeping till noon.

Yeah... I usually get up and about by 7-7:30am on my days off. Every great once in a while I will just go hog wild and sleep in until around 9-9:30am.

But my son and I are usually out of the house by 7:30 on saturdays. Why stay in a house where you have to sit quietly so that others can sleep their lives away. LOL

I worked at a donut shop quite a few years ago (I know I know... "...gotta make the donuts...!"), and got up at 3 am in order to be there by 4. After about a year I left the job and was back to my normal pre-donute shop sleep schedule within 48 hours.

Dittos. However, over the years, I am tired and in bed by 10:00 usually. However, I need so much sleep that I usually get up between 6:45 and 9:30 depending on the day. Don't tell me to get checked out by a doctor, been there, done that. I have been this way my whole life and am wired that way. I HATE that I am like this. But, I have no choice. My husband has finally accepted it. When we were first married , he was on my case all the time.

My husband is like this. However, he has been taking a sleeping pill a couple of times a week to FORCE himself to sleep more as he has a tendency to get high-wired and very cranky if he doesn't.

There are 4 of us living in our house and only one is a "woman folk" (that'd be me). But all 4 love to sleep late. Justin would stay up all night and then sleep all day if I'd let him. Keith is ready for bed by about 10:30, but he'll sleep till noon every chance he gets. Walt needs the most sleep of all of us. He turns in about an hour before I do and would sleep until 10 or 11 if he could. I am a terrible night owl. He have to force myself to get off of the computer or to stop cleaning or whatever I'm doing so I can get to bed. If I make it to bed by 11:00, I've done good. But I never fall asleep right away. I read for an hour or two in the bed. Then I'd sleep until 9 or 10 if I could. On Saturdays I do :)

Before we were married I worked 3rd shift in the nursing homes. THAT was perfect for me! I LOVED it!!

I'm a morning bird. Like to go to bed early and rise early. :)

I do NEED my 8 hours of sleep. I can get by with less for a day or so and then it is catch up time.

But my energy is usually gone by noon so I have to get all I can get done in the morning. Even if I try and pace it, I am still tired my noon.
