Personal Encounter With A Copperhead Snake

While sitting on my front porch last night talking to my son that was sitting at our picnic table. I felt a hard thump on the back of my chair. I looked at my son and asked what was that, he said I don't know. After a few seconds I looked down and saw a snake crawling under my front door into my house. As my son ran to the shed for a machete to kill it with, I tried to watch to see where it was going in my house. My son said Mom go get in my truck. I said why it's not coming toward me..lol I was more concerned about his baby boy inside the house than myself. After searching for a good 5 minutes he found it under our entertainment center, he killed it by chopping off it's head. He brought the snake to me so I could see if it was a chicken snake, which I thought it was at first. Nope, it was a 4 ft long cooperhead. The head was still moving and I said Robert do something about that head, he said it's just it's nerves Mom. I said I don't care kill it!!!!!! He said it's dead, I said not dead enough. Holding the body of the snake in front of me, blood dripping, I was talking to my husband on the phone who was at work. He said tell him to burn the head, whew he burned the whole thing, thank the Lord. I know God protected me, it could have fell on my head or bitten me. I am thinking I want to move out of the country.........LOL

Yep, doing that today. This is not my first encounter with copperheads. It's about my fourth, this one was just much too close.

*scream*

I'm so glad you were able to escape the nasty critter, Cindy!!!!!

I HATE snakes. They are in close proximity to us due to country living and nearby water, and every time I encounter one I become more terrified of them!!!!

Jeff killed a cotton mouth in our garage awhile back, it had crawled up a broom right next to the door from the laundry room to the garage, and was hanging out at about his waist height. NORMALLY, the kids go out that way, but that day they ALL went out another door. THAT was just the LORD!!!!!

Jeff hollered, "OH, MY God, HOLY MACARONI", and I thought, "Mouse? No, that was too much scream to be a mouse." LOL!!!!! He slaughtered it with two shovels and a hoe. It was about 3'. Or 4'. Or maybe 10. I don't recall.

Glad you were alright!

I hate venomous snakes! In B.C.s southern interior we have a desert with Scorpions, Black Widows, & Rattlesnakes!

I remember driving along the highway with the family in that area in the summer & you could hear the rattles in the side of the rocky cliffs!

I shot a copperhead by our birdbath. Knowing one of the sistah's was coming by to drop something off - the children and I coiled it up at the end of the sidewalk! When she drove up she was honking and honking her horn!!

Hilarious!!!! We came out of the house smiling. :toofunny

Glad everyone is okay, Cindy! That would be a very bad bite!!!

My mom killed a rattler that had crawled in the house and was coiled under the kitchen table using a garden hoe (this was in texas). Funny thing is she thought it was this rattlesnake plaster cast thing my grandma had had, she yelled at my little brother to pick that snake up and put it away... then it MOVED.....

Hate snakes, one good thing about CT is they are rare, but copperheads and rattlers are on the rebound, and heaven help you if you do much as give one of them a dirty look. The tree huggers will throw you under the jail.

Safest bet here is to just let it bite you....:D

I don't think so!!!! I really don't know why it fell like it did, but I am sure thankful the chair was between us!!!!!!!!! I have killed one in my kitchen with a pickle jar years ago. And met one in my shower, so I am very familiar with them. They usually run away as fast as they can slither.

YEs, Glad you are ok, My aunt Betty stepped on a copperhead in her backyard in Houston one night and it bit her on the leg. Luckily copperhead venom is not all that potent, she spent a day in the hospital and was on her way.

Did I mention I hate snakes? I was wlking with my daughter when she was about 10 and we walked up an a grass snake , that poor kid screamed and jumped so high I think she gave the critter a heart attack, that has been our only snake encounter in CT, and we go hiking often.

I sure am glad chicken tastes like chicken. It saves us from eating so many varmints to experience what chicken tastes like.

Wife called me on the walkie-talkie, one day, a bit frantic. She was walking the dog through the woods. "Tim, quick, what's that rhyme? Brown on red, ... black on yellow, ... how does it go??"

She saw a snake with colored bands. The rhyme she wanted was "Red on black, friend of Jack. Red on yellow, kill a fellow". Turns out, it was a friend. We think. :lol

I am 4' 10 1/2" and it was almost as long as I am. They don't get very big around though usually, compared to a rattler or moccasin.

Depending on the perspective, chicken could taste just like snake.

Yes, probably. Copperheads mate for life, and usually travel in pairs.
