Rex Johnson kind of church in Dallas area?

Now that I have read that people really appreciate Rex Johnson in Austin TX, I wonder if there are any churches in the Dallas/Ft Worth area like his church? I guess really, it would be best if it were on the southeast side, more toward Arlington than Plano.

Toward Arlington I believe would be more to the west/southwest direction, I believe. Maybe Grand Prairie, Arlington, Hurst, Euless, or Ft. Worth.

I am not real sure. People were praising him in another thread as someone with integrity, with a UPC background (I think) and such. Since many seemed to think that was such a great church, I thought I would see what is in the Dallas area.

We don't live in Dallas, but we know some people there that are looking for a Spirit led church, rather than a doctrine led church. In other words, both the music and the preaching/teaching is led by the Spirit and not by some program or programming. ;-)

So far all they have found are extremes in both directions. They find the traditional UPC flavor with the outside being of the utmost importance and the Spirit filled churches that basically sing x number of songs, pass the plate and preach for 20 minutes.

I am just hoping for some suggestions for them. I will Email them the ones that have been suggested thus far. Driving is not a problem, it is just easier to be involved when the church is not across town.

Thanks to all who help.

I go to ALC (alcplano.org). We do lean liberal on dress and such, but we are strong on doctrine, have great music and great people. If you want something further south, Foster's church is good, but much more traditional (www.dallasfirstchurch.com).

Just curious, how liberal does ALC lean? I know Mangun's daughter is the pastor's wife there now...AM isn't liberal, so that makes me curious. I hope this is not an offensive question, I do not mean it as such!

Gracie,

Based on pics posted on the church website I would say pretty liberal for the UPC!!

Well, the Potter's House is closer to Arlington than Plano, T.D. Jakes would welcome them. Most on this forum would not consider The Potter's House an option. Never mind, it really wasn't funny.:blush

I would not consider it - but not for the same reasons as most here wouldn't.

Based on the friend of a friend who attends there--I'd say they're pretty liberal. :)

Probably on par with Promiseland.

Why is that?

Judging from the pictures, and from their "What We Believe" statement, this church (ALCplano) can not be a part of the UPCI.

If so, how?

Jakes has built a huge community of believers, and I believe he is doing a commendable job in south Dallas.

Maybe because he is too liberal?? For many on AFF, though not for many. Like I said it wasn't funny.

This church's what we believe statement is about as "one-stepper" as you can get, without coming out and using the term.

From their website:

Salvation

We believe that all men have sinned and stand in need of redemption, which is obtained through the new birth by faith in the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ. Those repenting of sin and being born again become children of God and heirs with Christ.

The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is active in the world today and that the baptism of the Holy Spirit, with His accompanying gifts, is the privilege of all New Testament believers.

I agree with this, but this isn't how the UPCI presents the Gospel of Christ.

Oh, and by the way. We are not one-steppers. We DO, however, believe in presenting a simple message to non-church people that visit the website (the target audience, after all) - and that is that they need God, and we're there to help them find Him.

But what is preached is once they get in the door is pentecostal doctrine. I understand the arguments that you should just "lay it all out there". I get it. I understand that opinion. Maybe it's valid. Alternatively, I think there is a lot of validity to this approach.

I don't speak for my pastor or the church - these are just my thoughts.

:thumbsup

Ok, so these folks really preach and teach something a little bit different from what the website represents.

Yes, it's basically just to the northeast of Dallas. It's a very close suburb.

I've seen the building, but didn't know you had already moved into it!

It's huge.

There is a really good church in Richardson, TX. Pastored by Rev. George Hancock, and Bishop John Kershaw. They run approx 450 and although card carrying UPCI it is a strong doctrinal church with a moderate-liberal standard of dress. A good mixture of conservative to liberal. I recommend this church...Christian World.

Blessings, Rhoni

It actually doesn't seat a lot more in the sanctuary, but the property is really large and we now have better facilities for Sunday school, youth, etc.

That is a very good church. I have many friends that attend there. I have always thought of them as pretty conservative, but I haven't actually been in a while.
