I LOVE doing these!!!! LOL!!!!

Hannah, age [almost] 14, is taking riding lessons. She loves horses, and will get one of her own in the not so distant future. Her instructor has been teaching her the barrel racing routine (whatever its called--I'm no cowgirl), and turns out she has a knack for it--and she suggested that Hannah participate in some competitive races. I'm okay with it, but Jeff is not!

MY question is: Should we allow her to compete in barrel racing?

Jeff says it's too dangerous. I had to use heavy persuasion just to get him to let her take riding lessons!!!! I say it's no more dangerous than galloping a horse around the pasture. If she can do one, she can do the other.

What do you think? Should she be allowed to barrel race? I want both male and female opinions--and I wouldn't mind the opinions of a few cowboys! Would you let your daughter barrel race? :coffee2

As someone who's pastors kids participate in barrel racing--so I've watched enough of it to know what's involved--- I say sure... let her do it. I've never seen anyone get hurt doing barrel racing. I'd let my kids do it if they were interested.

Now if we were talking bullriding or something like that.. my vote would be different. :D

Of course your hubby is going to worry about her safety... she is her daddy's little girl... is she not? :) Gotta admire his concern for her wellbeing. :D

I think I would vote no on bullriding!!! LOL!!!

Riding lessons brought up the disagreement LAST year--Jeff wanted to let her ride her bike to the stables BY HERSELF! *gasp*

AFF and I won that argument. :D :D :D

I would agree that it's no more dangerous than riding a horse fast.

Does she wear a helmet when she rides? If so, I think she'd be fine.

I would. But I wouldn't push her into it, or anything else like that. Let her find her own level of confidence. Barrel racing is fun, and it'll certainly keep you and the horse fit.

Statistically, the biggest danger will be while she's traveling to and fro on the highway.

Yes, horse activities can be dangerous... but so is living. ;)

We have horses. We also have bikes, skateboards, rollerblades, ramps, and CARS. All potentially injury-inducing.

If it's something she wants to do, I'd let her do it.

Yes, she wears a helmet--it's required. I assume that it's required for races, too, but I guess we don't know that for sure....

Hannah is really into it, and she's pretty athletic. It is quite a workout--more than I ever realized.

Life is all about risk management. There is pretty much always risk involved in anything fun or worthwhile. The risk does not seem excessive in this case so I say go for it.

If we try to hard to protect our kids from risk we actually hurt htem by limiting their experiences.

Many years ago a 16 year old niece of mine was visiting for the summer and about to go to church camp when a 16 year old relative of hers was killed in a tragic car accident. My SIL was so distraught she made her daughter come home and not go to camp because the camp had riding horses and a swimming pool and she was afraid her daughter would get hurt. As fate would have it right after arriving home my niece was the passenger in a car involved in an accident and broke her back. She would have been much safer riding those horses and swimming at camp!

Good thoughts on risk management. Fear is the enemy progress and reward. Fear is overcome with risk management.

I say let her race. I did some of that before I married and I had almost no riding experience. I helped train the horse for a friend. Yes, she could get hurt. The horse could fall and pen her under it.

But I was hurt worse riding in a car.

Life has risk. I don't think this one is unreasonable, and I'm a pretty cautious person.

I had a LOT of friends when I was young that had horses and barrel raced. This was when I was in elementary school. :-) I do not ever remember anyone getting hurt.

Of course, as it has been said, she can get hurt there and she can also get hurt in the car on the way there. I think what you two feel is God's will for her is what is important. If you feel confident in His will, then the outcome matters not.

Listen to your hubby. This one will take more than a coconut pie. Try homemade Stroganoff with real cream and white wine.

Just be sure and obey or you may find yourself over the barrel!

I do not know much about barrel racing, but as long as you take precautions, provide lessons, and provide her with the necessary safety equipment I say let her follow her dream. It is a good confidence builder and experience for her.
