Are Mice REALLY That Dumb???

While sitting on the sofa watching TV last night, my attention was diverted to our staircase which is in my line of sight.

I see a dark little blur, and hear a huge *thud*.

It was a mouse that had fallen from the floor above onto about the third or fourth step of the stairs.

REALLY?!? :uhoh

Yes, really!

It must have been a bit stunned because it didn't know what to do, or where to go, giving me enough time to grab the cat near me and sic it on the mouse. Of course my dog was scaring the cat so he didn't even pay attention to the dark little blur and a hilarious chase ensued.

Stoopid cat keeps bringing them inside to 'play' with before he eats them. Unfortunately, some get away while he's batting them around. Ggggrrrr! :pullhair

Mice don't make a huge *thud,* that was a "RAT!":foottap

Ugh!

Keep skunks around - they'll keep the mice away!

I think I'd rather deal with having to eliminate mice. At least I can catch them in traps... Don't think I could deal with the skunk problem. :D

Re: Are Mice REALLY That Dumb???

My daughter saw not one, but TWO mice in her room yesterday. She puts our black cat in there, but he was all over the dresser, where they'd apparently been living. We took most of the stuff out of her room, but he wasn't able to get them.

His auntie, who is an old farm cat, was put in there also, but she had an attitude of 'I used to catch mice only when I had to, and I'm not doing you any favors for love or money', and planted her fat self underneath the desk and just sat there looking around. She refused to hunt for mice.

My son informs me this morning that he resorted to buying mouse traps. Figures. I have useless cats!!!

I feel compelled to breakdown this post. With all the talk about how we DEFINE AFF, analyzing one of the key supporters is of critical importance.:missing

The average mouse maybe weighs 4-6 ozs...how does that little bit-o stuff create a HUGE THUD. What is the MRS really hearing or wanting us to believe she heard?
It was a mouse that had fallen from the floor above onto about the third or fourth step of the stairs.
FALLEN? FALLEN? she will later go on to implicate the cat in the crime involving a little rodent locked in a battle for its life being launched from the stairway precipise by ?..... Why is the MRS covering for CAT in this unprovoked act of violence?
REALLY?!? :uhoh

Yes, really!
Why is the MRS having a conversation with herself using typed dialogue? Who is she speaking to?....the Cat? her doggie? her other self?

So...we now learn that MRS may actually be involved at the top of this mouse tormenting food chain, the director of this scene....and the CAT is her patsy.

Stoopid cat keeps bringing them inside to 'play' with before he eats them. Unfortunately, some get away while he's batting them around. Ggggrrrr! :pullhair

So, is the MRS really an anti-cat kooky eccentric that is out to make a CAT the fall-guy whenever strange sounds occur....in her mind?
Is the MRS actually inviting unsuspecting MICE onto her stairway by telling them she has leftover cheese she can't finish?
Are all the problems with AFF actually just a smoke screen to cover up the MRS' sinister cat-n-mouse games?

....inquiring minds NEED TO KNOW!

When my lovely, silly dog was alive, we had several mice in the house. Now that's he's gone, our cat came home and no more mice.

I think our cat has a boyfriend that's been hanging around. I feed them both in the mornings. I don't particularly care for cats, so our cat is simply called Gato and the other one doesn't have a name. LOL!

Re: Are Mice REALLY That Dumb???

We currently own our third cat. He supplements his dry cat food diet all by himself. We find baby rabbit pieces and bird feathers on the front porch.

In another state and city, cat #1 was seen eating mice, birds, chasing dogs (really!:ursofunny) The cat was part siamese. We lived near a large field where weeds and insects flourished.

Earlier I had a serious cricket problem in the basement :sad Imagine sorting the clothes to add to the washer and having crickets :chirp
jump out at you.
Shortly after getting the cat----the cricket problem ended:thumbsup
If I had known her worth we'd have found a cat sooner.

Cat #3 was spayed but still has cat friends. We've always allowed our cats outdoor privileges. Spencer has "cat" friends that come to our deck in back or porch in front. There are two cats that visit...gender unknown:whistle

Ron was right...it wasn't that small of a mouse that made that big of a thud.

We bought these stoopid little no-contact mousetraps. It's like a little mouse hotel, they go in, but never come out. After seeing that 'mouse' last night, I now realize why we've never caught one in them, but the outsides have been CHEWED! They are too big to get in! :toofunny

My husband, not knowing 'The Mouse Story' yet, came home from the grocery store with these GIGANTIC mouse traps!!!

They are HUGE!!! They're like 3" wide by 8" long! :uhoh

That ought get-er-done, eh??? :toofunny

Now if I can just keep my dog and cat away from them.... :thumbsup

Re: Are Mice REALLY That Dumb???

Mrs, is your cat declawed? Mine is front declawed. He will lick the mice and may sit on-and due to size almost suffocate-them, but I've never found evidence that he's killed one.

That is a pretty big 'mouse'... But your husband's traps may be too big. If they don't do the trick, I've heard that if you get a five gallon bucket, put a brick small side up in the center, water all around up to the top of the brick, peanut butter on the brick, they'll climb in and can't get out. I don't know what to do if you catch one this way though... Unless you turn it lose outside for cat training...

Re: Are Mice REALLY That Dumb???

Human perspective: Mice are really that dumb. That's why they run around in mouse mazes all day and don't boycott scientists, right?

Mouse perspective: I got where I was going and I'm still alive right? Let's see you jump off a ledge at least 18x your height and keep running! Fit, that's what I am!

Maybe what you need is a bigger cat. :thumbsup

You have some pretty big mice!!! Are you sure that isn't rat size??

The average mouse weighs 35-42 grams....that's about 1 1/2 - 2 oz.

You must feed yours well!

That being the case, it really makes me wonder how something so light can make such a huge noise. I mean, just how sensitive are those ears of hers anyway???

No Mary, he isn't declawed. He's an inside/outside cat. Spends most of his time outside. That's why I have mice IN my house...he catches them OUTSIDE and brings them INSIDE to eat. Well, at least that's what he USUALLY does. AFTER he plays with them. But sometimes they get away from him...apparently!

I'm pretty sure it's one of those field mice. They have huge ears, and are just a tad bigger than regular ole house mice. Hence the *thud* :winkgrin

And to explain the *thud* a bit...they are newly built stairs, so it's just the hard wood step...no soft carpet to land on...too bad little mousey!

One time we DID find a dead rat in my son's closet...so I KNOW how big a rat actually is! Unless of course it was a baby neutria. I wasn't gonna inspect it! :bolt

The Mrs,
Our cat is a total outside cat and we don't have mice inside. The difference may be that ours is not quite tame. You think that makes a difference? She will let me pet her while she's eating, but she won't let me touch her otherwise. The other cat that is hanging around won't let me touch it.

Anyway, peanut butter on a mouse trap is the best. They can't grab that and get away. :thumbsup

We used to live in a house that was surrounded by maze and corn fields. Once when we came home from being out of town a HUGE hole had been chewed by the back door allowing the rat's entrance. We didn't know where that rat could be!!! My husband bent a tin can and nailed it in place because we were so tired. He didn't want to repair the hole that late at night. We put out some poison and it ended up dying under the bath tub!!! We were getting ready to move to our new home and I'm so glad for that - nasty!!!!

Sounds like you have a rat infestation in your house. You should turn off your TV......grab a broom, rags and cleaning fluid and start cleaning your house! :gotcha :D
