One Less Anti-TV vote? WD Presybter leaves UPC?

Well I heard a UPC in the WD whose pastor is a presbyter and is an Ultra Con is pulling out of the UPC. Perhaps Thad can confirm this. I wonder what is the point in pulling out now. Does it benefit anyone? I mean besides the fact that the pastor will not have anyone to tithe to?

Nahum 04-17-2007 05:53 PM

How sad.

BoredOutOfMyMind 04-17-2007 07:12 PM

This man decided to wait until after District Conference to withdraw.

If it is who I think it is..... PM me.

CC1 04-17-2007 07:14 PM

What is his reason for withdrawing and what is the point of waiting until after the district conference?

Pivitol vote for

1- Super as Ron Mullings is stepping aside.

2- vote to allow Southern California churches to create new District.

I don't know why he is leaving. I know another strong voice on the WD board is not allowing his name to stand also.

PM coming Boom...BBL

Scott Hutchinson 04-17-2007 09:53 PM

Are these men starting a new org ,or are they joining a group like THE AMF?

I hate to say it, but all of this bashing of good brethren as "ultra-con" this & that smacks of being juvenile. There may be a more suitable word, but I cannot think of it right now. It's as though some folks don't have anything better (more constructive) to do than slam someone else.

It is clear that you are intelligent; it would be nice to see you put yourself into something more edifying.

It's clear you can read...so you mind point out where I bashed and slammed? Perhaps if you think the term Ultra Con is a slam, you can explain it to me. I though it was a designation for someone more conservative than just a conservative......

These type of **Newsflash** postings have been a part of our group from the beginning. Nearly all need to be taken with a grain of salt and all need to be questioned. I believe Prax did question the validity of the event.

The event is a true account having been told for a long time on another board.

As far as you questioning intelligence....well. :aaa

Not exactly. Why your stance on this, since you are not UPC?

So true. It is amazing how many twists and turns things take before the real deal emerges.

I think we will all be surprised how it turns out.

I would be interested on your take on this, Agape, as well.

Nahum 04-18-2007 11:29 AM

There is no way the tv resolution will pass.

Ain't gonna happen.

I was UPC. I have friends that are UPC.
Let's say that you are a conservative upc preacher and you preach against tv.
Now let's say that one of your new converts somehow finds out about the UPC okaying, even promoting, tv ad.,etc. How do you handle this?
TV is the last straw for most of the cons still left in the org.
I hope and pray that the TV resolution will be soundly defeated, BUT I "think" that it will pass. Some mighty big names are sponsering it.

I won't be surprised. I have consistently predicted the resolution will fail yet again. Not because a majority of ministers don't support it but because there are enough moderates who are intimidated by the idea of the cons leaving enough to join with them in voting it down to "preserve unity".

A "unity" which I doubt will be kept anyway since the cons are itching to leave over other weighty matters like video screens at conferences, short sleeves, music, etc.

Big names or not, the men on that floor will not be swayed by pomp and circumstance.

I have a bigger problem with the big names bragging on how they violate the rules. If a hotel room does not suit you, check out. No need to picket the corporate offices.

I have always had this wild scenario in the back of my mind. I know it is "wild" but nevertheless!!!!

What if the TV resolution fails again this year as I believe it will and a year or two in the future. At some point if this impasse seemed permanent it would be interesting if some of the TV advertising proponents jumped ship enmasse and joined the ALJC.

I would think that especially since the ALCJ's fortunes have been plumenting these last few years with some prominent members jumping over to the UPC that the ALJC would welcome this shot of fresh blood that could include some of the bigger churches in the UPC. Some of these pastors might find themselves having instant leadership roles in the ALJC!

I do not think this will happen but it has always intrigued me that the ALJC allows using TV to minister which would make it the logical home for UPC preachers who want to do that.

I don't understand why KP and MH didn't go that path back in 1977.

And I agree with you. Some have said KP was wrong for the WAY he did the jump.

I don't know of any large ALJC TV out reach either.

Seems this idea of allowing preaching on TV is a moot point at sometime. They are on the net with video, sound, effects, and promotion. So the new Media Center of the Future merges all together, and where is the the line at then?

I am old enough to remember when KP left and he kept a very good spirit and attitude about it. The same could not be said for the UPC Texas DS and some others.

A lot of people tried to stir up trouble for him. I remember when I was in Bible College some UPC churches were complaining that KP's TV program was being show in their Metropolitan area. They accused him of trying to "prosletyze". The funny thing was that when people called in for info about Acts 2:38 ,etc the telephone counselors all had UPC manuals and directed people to their local UPC church!

Aren't there other things, not mentioned in the manual, that preachers preach on? If the TV thing passes, I don't see how that would mean those opposed to tv could no longer preach against it.

Heh heh heh

Our favorite line is to ask him if he knows he is preaching.....

It will be nice to see folks walking in a Straightline again!

Of course they COULD and WOULD still preach against it.
It just would take some explaining to a new convert if they heard that the org that you belong to FAVORS using TV when you BELIEVE, and rightly so, that using TV is not good

Monkeyman 04-18-2007 02:40 PM

If the thing passes and UC's leave, will ALL their saints go with them into unchartered waters (indie/another org/a new org) or find another UPC church? Thoughts?
I think most would go but a significant number would not follow a pastor for leaving over advertising on TV

Not anymore than explaining why the church teaches against other things, like sleeve length, or whatever else that particular church teaches on.

I was raised up in a ALJC church in Knoxville, Tn. The church there has had tv ministry for about 20 yrs or more. It accually started with a radio broadcast then went to tv. Now the fact of the matter is that tv is the cheapest, quickest way to get into homes. Our broadcast cost I think 400 a month and that is combining the tv and radio. Over the years the cost has increased. But the main thing is that there are about 35 families that have joined the church over the years because of the Tv broadcast.

I am not saying 35 people. Families. Some of the people that have come in have felt the call of God and started ministies. One man and his wife does a church at a truck stop for truckers. 35 families not to mention the people that those 35 have won. That church there runs close to 900-1000 people. Most of which might not have been there if were not for the Tv broadcast. There have been down points though. We were told not to come to several UPC organized events such as choir singing at JCm and others. Now there are no walls there, because we have proved it can be done and stay true the truth!

The bottom line is that no one can ever, ever, ever convince me tv does not work. It might not fly in your area too well, because of time slots or whatever. But it works. My father and I produced the program for a long time and I can tell you it is not too hard to do with the right equipment you can have a great program.
