Bars..

Ok to pastors on here a question for ya

Do yall preach about bars and the outside sinful world alot to your congregation...LOL

That seems to be all I hear lately is alot of talk about bars and (The World and how bad it is) I would find it safe to say that the people I go to church with do not go to bars we have a really small church so why preach on it....I did not learn anything biblical yesterday at Sunday school because the preacher was complaining about the Outside world so much..It was a visiting preacher also.

My pastor said this yesterday, "your problem is not going to the casino and losing your money, your problem is not fornicating, your problem is not getting drunk and getting arrested, your problem is that you don't believe in Jesus Christ for your salvation."

The AT&T slogan came to mind when I read this thread title: "More bars in more places." :lol

Why would someone need to go to a bar?

Nobody needs to (or if they do, they have a problem). But a lot of people enjoy it.

Why would someone need to go to a library? Or the park, or church, or a concert?

I really don't go to bars so I wouldn't know anything about it.

If something is wholesome or productive, I see nothing wrong with recreation or entertainment, but what is wholesome or productive about a bar or a bar environment?

Maybe he was reaching for that one lost sheep among the other 39? It is not uncommon for a Saint to lead a double-life and wear various masks.

Maybe a 'bar' encompasses all efforts involving self-medication outlets?

Can you share what you learned in Sunday School the prior week when it was not a visiting preacher?

Playing pool, learning how to play pool, putting a quarter in the juke box, talking with friends plenty of productivty in a bar...See people always see the glass half empty I choose to see it half full...I always try to look at the positivity in everything...

But you were not able to find anything positive in the visiting preacher's message to the gathered Saints.

Hustling the patrons at the pool table to make rent money. See that is productive.

I think some people go to bars for the same reason that some people go to church,

"Making your way in the world today takes everything you've got.
Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot.

Wouldn't you like to get away?

Sometimes you want to go

Where everybody knows your name,
and they're always glad you came.
You wanna be where you can see,
our troubles are all the same
You wanna be where everybody knows
Your name.

You wanna go where people know,
people are all the same,
You wanna go where everybody knows
your name."

OK, point taken. But there is a lot of variety in bar environments. Some are just people having fun, talking, laughing, meeting people, enjoying life. Yes, there is the flip side, too. Bad things can happen there, and they are more likely to happen there than, say, at a library! :winkgrin

Still, my point is really this: different strokes for different folks. ;) I wouldn't want anyone to go to a bar that doesn't feel comfortable there, any more than you would want anyone to go to .... Oh. Wait. I was going to say "church that doesn't feel comfortable there". Never mind. :toofunny

I guess looking through your glass-half empty lense you fail to see the wisdom of KWWS's insights involving.....

"outting a quarter in the juke box".

but there are plenty of good things that go on at the All-You-Can eat Buffet after Sunday service, right?

Re: Bars..

I don't think KWSS's initial point was that it's a good thing to go to bars. He was wondering if it's necessary to preach against bars repeatedly in an established church.

I wouldn't think so. I can't recall the last time I've heard it preached.

I think spending a lot of time preaching against the evils of the world is not very productive. We should spend more time preaching about how to show people who are in that world JESUS.

It was a visiting preacher so this is not a case of spending a LOT of time unless this preacher visits a lot of the time.

KWWS apparently was accustomed to receiving something biblically edifying in Sunday School because he commented that he did NOT receive any such thing during the visiting preacher's message. This also speaks to infrequency of this topical focus.

Reminds me of an old Ray stevens song.

"Flock, a-ha. I just wanna say a few words about them discotechs. People's in there smokin', people's in there drinkin. People's in there dancing, a-ha. I tell you flock, a-ha, them discotechs ain't nothin' but a regular Sodom and Gamore, a-ha. Where you goin', Virgil, a-ha?"

"I'm goin' over to one of those discotechs!"

"You come back here, Virgil, a-ha!"

Maybe the visiting preacher was tipped off by the pastor that a certain AFF member frequents bars!:ursofunny

I haven't heard bars mentioned from the pulpit for at least a hundred years. I once heard that preaching is confessing. A preacher sometimes harps on something because he himself has problem with. T.S. Tenney told us this one day when he was the special speaker in our Ministerial Ethics class back in the last century.

Other than young adults hoping to meet someone, are bars really a big deal. Obviously not where I hang out.
I know my younger coworkers go to bars on the weekend.

Most restaurants serve liquor now anyway.

Re: Bars..

When I was about 20 a supervisor at work was leaving, and my work associates planned a going away get together.

Since we worked in the evening, they "unofficially" shut down the office.
We all went to a bar (drinking age was younger!).

They served food and everyone got drinks. It really seemed to bother everyone since I didn't "drink".
(My 1st choice --- Diet Coke--- wasn't invented until 1982 so ....)
I drank lots of 7up. Whenever I finished it, someone made sure I had a refill.
This was before free refills:ursofunny But I don't think bars give pop refills anyway.
What stands out in my mind was the desire that I also have a glass of "something". Apparently people don't like to drink alone:foottap

(we were all on the clock so to speak and returned to the office after a couple hours)
My only bar experience.

My only two experiences in bar were loud and smokey could not even hear the person I was trying to talk to... did not drink anything because I could not see my way to the bar cause of all the smoke...LOL

Not only do most bars give free refills on plain soda, if you are the DD you usually get it totally free (meaning that you don't even have to pay for the first one).
