Birth Order
Are you a first born or the baby of the family? Maybe the middle child? What do you do or did you do to earn a living? Or are you an only child?
Myself I was the second born, first born daughter and raised as an only child until I was 6 by another family. I was in the banking industry for the bulk of my working years. |
Re: Birth Order
After we get some input I will come back and discuss further. I think you will find this interesting.

Re: Birth Order
After a stint in the Navy i worked in a large UAW factory for 15 years. Then I sold GM cars for 15 years.
For the last 8 to 10 years I have been on staff part time at our church while also running a small maintenance company doing mainly work on empty apartment buildings. About year and half ago I added power wheelchair delivery and service work to the list of part time things I do now. I love to fish and explore the MN/Canadian border lakes and starting next year I'll be taking the month of July off from the above duties and managing a resort on the Canadian border. |
Re: Birth Order
I am a first born, married to a first born, of course our oldest child is a first born, so we have only one baby in our family... makes for an interesting situation.
I was a foster child for a while, which mixes things up a bit. I have been a teacher, massage therapist, and I am currently in school for communication. |
Re: Birth Order
Not sure how to vote here. I am my Dad's firstborn, but my Mom's middle child. My two older sisters left home at an early age, so I was raised as oldest.
I worked as an EMT until I got pregnant with my son, so now I am a stay at home Mom. I am thinking about starting school next fall, but I am not sure what I want to do. |
Re: Birth Order
I was the baby to my parents, born late in their lives. They always told me they were so glad I came along! :D
I had 3 older sisters 19, 16 and 10 years older and 1 brother 14 years older. I have been a full time homemaker for most of my married life, but I have worked a few jobs here and there. Some of which were/are waitress, cook's aide, daycare, sewing, typist, and book keeping. |
Re: Birth Order
How do you answer if you're your own grandpa? ;)

Re: Birth Order
I am the oldest of 5. Also the oldest grandchild on my mother's side of the family. My sister didn't come along until I was 3 years old. Then I was 5 when we added my brother, 6 when we added my second brother and 7 1/2 when my youngest sister came along. For the first 5 years, my sister and I were the only grandchildren.
My situation is a little bit different tho in that I have aunts and uncle who are only 10, 11 and 12 years older than me. And because we lived next door to my grandparents, and I was always "Grandma's baby girl", I almost feel like I could have been the baby of my grandparents family. Know what I mean? I have done daycare in my home for the last 24 years. I chose to do that because it was important to us from the very beginning that I stay at home to raise our children. We did not want someone else raising our kids. Just a personal thing, I guess. OR it could be because my dad was adamant about my mom NEVER working - he wanted to be the provider and he wanted her to be home to raise the kids. I guess you live what you learned :) |
Re: Birth Order
I'm the oldest.
I've worked a lot of customer service. But, I'm a teacher. Plain and simple. I'm currently in school so I can teach and get paid for it too. :) I was a stay at home mom from the time my oldest was born until I went back to school when he was 8. Since then, I've been in school and worked a variety of jobs on campus (tutor, library assistant) and customer service work (fast food, Walmart for awhile). When I graduate, I'll teach highschool history. Unless I go directly into a graduate program and work an internship on a college campus instead. My eventual goal is to teach at a college level. It's entirely likely I'll end up with a PhD in history, and at least a few degrees in math as well. :) Math is the love of my life and teaching it makes me very, very happy. It'd take me a year and a half longer to get a BS in math than it will take me to get a BA in history though. I have to support these kids, and fast food isn't cutting it. |

Re: Birth Order
I'm the oldest of 7, but was only raised with my oldest brother. The other five lived with my dad and his wife.
My mom demanded a lot more out of me than my brother, who is just 2 1/2 yrs younger than I. And today, our lives show how detrimental that was to him. I'm a nurse, but have worked since I was 15, even though I didn't get my degree until last year. However, my brother, although he owns his own construction company (and has for about 10 years) constantly struggles with money and only lived on his own (albeit with the help of his in-laws) while married for about 7 years. I've lived on my own for over 15 years, but when I lived at home as an adult, I paid rent and bought my own food and supplies. My brother never did that. Still doesn't...LOL! |

So there is significant age difference between me and the oldest (~20 years), but not me and the sib closest to me. |
