Need something effective to repel snakes.....

Seems the mothballs aren't doing the trick anymore--

I hate snakes!!

Last night as we were leaving for church-- we killed a baby copperhead on our driveway. It was about the size of a pencil. Michael thought it was a WORM-- and wanted to keep it for a pet.

Usually where there's one-- there's at least half a dozen of those things.

I hate snakes!!

This is the first time we've seen one of those in many years. I know that living close to the river like we do, we are going to see snakes-- but I don't have to let them live in my yard. There has to be something effective to keep them away.

I hate snakes!!

The lawn is kept cut short -- and larger snakes would be easy to spot.. but the thoughts of there being more of those babies out there is keeping my kids in the house unless hubby is home to be out there with them.

Did I mention that I hate snakes?! :aaa

I remember my Daddy telling me that the best snake repellant was to always carry a flashlight........
Of course, he said you have to carry it real fast. LOL

Oh! I also hate snakes. Stepped on one while barefooted as a child while climbing across a fence. I don't remember climbing back across that fence... but some friends with me said they never seen anyone jump as high as I did that day. LOL

BoredOutOfMyMind 04-19-2007 08:35 AM

Best Repellant?

U-Haul.

Ducks will do it every time.

Eat them up when they are young.

I have "heard" that putting a rope around your tent would keep them from crossing over it.

I have also heard that if you will crumble those things (white round disk that hangs on the side) you put in your commode would keep them away also. Has a strong odor.

I hate snakes, and sticks that LOOK like snakes. :)

chaotic_resolve 04-19-2007 01:25 PM

Hire an Appalachian holiness saint to come and take them away . . . :happydance

COOPER 04-19-2007 01:33 PM

Try putting out bird food. Lots of bird food. I have seen a blue jay eat a baby snake.

Also cats help keep them away.

Here in Amarillo we like to have Bull snakes around, they kill rattlers.

Your right if you saw a baby Copper head there is more. Need to find the nest.

Ferd 04-19-2007 01:40 PM

What cooper said. keep the birds close.

I dont know if this one is true or not but diatmatious earth, i belive will irritate the snakes and drive them away. might want to google that.

I recall an incident while visiting with an uncle in the mountains of West Virginia some years ago, when some of his GUINEA FOWLS began making a lot of noise. When I asked him what was causing them to do that he said they must have found another snake, so off we went to where they were. When we arrived where these Guinea Fowl were prancing back and forth, cackling like crazy, there lay one of the largest Copperheads I have ever seen. My uncle took a garden hoe and killed it. I remember him telling me that those Guineas were the best defense one could ever get against snakes. He told me they won't try to kill them, just that they raise such a loud ruckus when they spot one, that they won't stop until it is either dead or gone.

Now that I think about it-- when we had outdoor cats, we NEVER saw snakes. Unfortunately cats don't survive long here outdoors-- due to coyotes, etc.

I guess it's worth a shot...

Plus I'll throw bird seed all over the yard.

Anything reasonable is worth a try I guess.

Theresa 04-19-2007 02:20 PM

forgive my ignorance, but if she puts out bird seed, will it sprout and she have a yard full of weeds???

My husband blames that on the weeds that came up under the deck.

This thread made me register. Congratulations! I haven't posted since NFCF.

I've heard that golf balls work. Scatter some around where you think the snakes are. They think they are eggs, eat them, and then die when they can't digest them.

Carpenter 04-19-2007 03:05 PM

Buy a goat. Snakes hate goats.

Cheaper to plant Moth balls unless you have a driving range where they are cheap to buy buckets of used golf balls.

Come to think of it....My neighbor across the street knocks golf balls into his field. He has about three acres un cut.

He also had a pony back there too and many cats and dogs.

And we let a bull snake loose back there. If we find a bull snake it goes in his back Field.

Have not seen a rattler yet in three years.

The bonus is you can then have the entire church over for Putt-Putt. The draw back is you will never get the lawn mower out for fear of seeing this...

Tina 04-19-2007 08:19 PM

HAHAHA!!

I think I'll skip trying the golf ball trick. Hubby is dangerous with a lawnmower already... he doesn't need any help.

At the end of the summer last year he threw something with the lawnmower into the big window on the side of my minivan. Don't want to go through that ordeal again. :D

Thats why you plant one or two where the mower can't get to them....remembered .....My grandmother would put them in the nests where the chickens layed.

We have LOTS of rattlesnakes. I purchased this Snake-A-Way product and went to Wally World to purchase lots of the Naphthalene mothballs (there are other types of mothballs that will not work).

When I saw the ingredients of Snake-A-Way, I went to the farm store and purchased 50 pounds of sulfur. I put lots of sulfur and mothballs all around - even under the generator. One day I found a sleeping rattlesnake coiled up right on top of my mothballs and sulfur under the generator. I still spread mothballs all around in hopes the sleeping snake was drunk or lacked the ability to smell. :lol

BTW - If we want more snakes, we feed the birds lots of food. The bird food droppings brings in the mice and rats. The mice and rats bring the snakes and badgers. We quit feeding the birds because of the mice, rats, and copious amount of snakes that congregate. I'll assure you they are not there to listen to the bird music.

I've seen a few of those chicken snakes when I was a kid! Scary creatures! I hate snakes and those palmetto bugs that fly.

I did not read the other posts but snakes and cats don't mix. That is the reason when we lived more rurally we had outdoor cats. Also you can use moth balls.Snakes hate moth balls.

Well I saw some snake-away at the pest control store.

But it sounds like it might not work according to the above poster.
