UPCI is getting BIGGER!
Every year at conference, the people are getting bigger and bigger. I just watched people this year in St Louis, women who are so obese that they can’t walk, preachers with huge stomachs, is it just me or is the UPCI as an organization getting fatter by the year?
With this kind of growth we will have to double the seating in a few years and charge $100 per person for conference fees. I was watching a preacher who had to be over 500 lbs, so big he couldn’t stand up, I was wondering how he could justify preaching against smoking being harmful to your body, or being addicted to alcohol. Doubling in a Decade, Global Impact! |

It goes back decades. My memories of GC as a child were all the huge district officials on the stage. One year our Dis. superintendent spoke about sacrifice and his vest wouldn't cover his huge stomach. It was hard to listen to. |

I actually though someone was going to claim the UPC was growing.

Butter, cream, carbs, starchy, fatty foods, unhealthy oils in everything, fried foods, sugar added to just about everything... Add that to lifestyles and careers that require little-no physical exertion, and you have a BIG problem. |

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
I know "I" am getting bigger.... At least a little (still well under 160#). I was the same weight for 15 years of my adult life then got married and then (to quote a certain chef) BAM!, gained about 10-15 lbs in the first year.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
Its not just a UPC problem, it is a problem of our society, However, when you have a large group of women who all look the same it is much more noticeable.

This reminds me of a story the late Bro. Billy Cole told about a Baptist lady, (and I have wonderful Baptist friends) who told one of our Pentecostal ladies, "You ladies all look alike". to which the Pentecostal lady responded, "Well, you do too". Who do we look like! Who do they look like. When Jesus was on earth, the glory of God shone through his face. Where would you ex- pect to see the glory of God today. Could it be that is what is meant by open faces. Not covered up. Men don't look ashamed for the most part. Perhaps boastful, but certainly not ashamed. Could it be there are reasons many of our ladies are ashamed. Just wondering. Happiness and joy on the inside should be reflected in our faces. Sis. Nona Freeman mentioned when they came back to America from Africa many years ago,she noticed the sad, unhappy faces of the women. No JOY! The Kingdom of God is not meat and drink, BUT righteousness, peace and joy, in the Holy Ghost. Perhaps many received the Holy Ghost years ago, but if we have no joy and peace, perhaps we need a refilling! If you drink from the WATER OF LIFE freely and deeply, we're going to need a refill from time to time! HEY, dear Sisters, GOD GIVES REFILLS FREELY! GO TO HIM TODAY! Noticed also while shopping, etc., that many of the young people today look the same. Tight jeans with tees, etc. Male and female. So it's not just the Pentecostal ladies. I do not try to look like anyone else. I'm just who I am. Very comfortable with being who and what God made me. And I am NOT ashamed of the gospel of Jesus Christ, for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone thatbelieveth, to the Jew and also to the Greek. There was a time I did not have that power. Am very thankful to have received it. This is not to imply that all Pentecostal ladies are uphappy, overweight, etc. or have no JOY. It might be the person/persons we are following. GOD or man! Not to offend anyone, but my thoughts. Falla39 |
Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
I was riding my mountain bike today at 6 AM in the dark. Only people I saw were 2 boys near 7 AM that were walking to school.
I offer 1 positive point. The overweight people are more accepted at our church than the more liberal churches where people show a lot of skin. I also notice on the wedding pages at the peak of youth and vigor, many have become victums of carb attacks. |

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
99% of the time it is a matter of discipline and self-control. A very small portion have true physical problems at the root of their morbid obesity.
I have never been obese, but I just lost 33lbs and am more fit than I have been in 10yrs and I am 55yrs old. I have changed my diet, increased my exercise and am in training for an Ironman Triathlon. Without saying much about it from the pulpit, I have challenged numerous people at NLC. They know I'm running and have seen a change in my fitness level, but I still don't berate that "fulfilled" population (which are very few) who attend NLC. :D |
Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
It is a national problem, but IMO, there is a larger percentage of obese people in the UPC than the nation. Not counting the children, there are probably 6 people in my church of normal weight.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
I saw thin and large women at General Conference.
Could it be having all our socials with excellent cooks or eating late at night after church is common too. If the soul is happy, so is the tummy! |
Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
i thought this was about growth at first too, then i couldnt stop laughing for a bit, sad but true, but oh well, dt

As much as I hate it, I have to apologize to AFF for calling some of us jerks. I guess I should have reported myself.

To be fair, it's something we should all be concerned with. Preachers get the scrutiny because of there position, but it's an entire North America and church world problem. We are a land of blessing. Even the most poor among us is not starving. Nothing to be snarky about, and surely nothing to point fingers about. Let's do better church! This is another reason why fasting is a great idea. It helps us to connect with the majority of the world that is doing without. Humility that breeds compassion. |
Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
Last numbers I saw, there are more people on the planet that are endangered by obesity than are endangered by starvation.

Of the 20 or so people there, only 3 people were of normal weight. Over half were obese. NONE of them looked Apostolic (although about half were clean-shaven men without their wives). ;) |
Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
I was on a crafting forum a few minutes ago.... a few of the ladies had gotten together to visit, and they posted a photo of themselves. (non-Pentecostals) Of the 7 of them, 1 was ideal weight. The other 6 were very overweight.

Re: UPCI is getting BIGGER!
Could I be allowed to take a step backward, here?
In an earlier post, I put up one of those laugh thinggys. I just want to be clear, I was NOT laughing AT overweight people. I've had serious weight-control issues in my past. Being disciplined in my eating has become very much a part of my worship. My life was once dominated by extreme indulgence followed by crash dieting. But I am seven years delivered from both. I've held an ideal weight now for that long, by the power of the Holy Spirit. When I laughed, it was at the thought of Christianity's inability to honestly address this issue. We can chop the heads off the smokers, drinkers, and chewers. But it's almost impossible for us to address overeating when a great number of spiritual leaders have not conquered the problem themselves. So while I may well be a "jerk", I would never laugh at a "weight-challenged" person and I would never use the "F-word". (no, not THAT f-word) |
