Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Family
James Dobson, the voice of conservative Christian group Focus on the Family, will no longer host its flagship radio broadcast and is cutting formal ties with the organization that he founded more than 30 years ago, the evangelical group said Friday.
Dobson, 73, and the board of directors both agreed about the moves, which will go into effect at the end of February, ministry officials said. The decision to part ways was amicable and long anticipated, said Gary Schneeberger, spokesman for the Colorado Springs-based group. Dobson has distanced himself in recent years from the organization he founded in 1977 and built into an influential force — both as a political powerhouse and provider of conservative family and moral advice. Dobson resigned as Focus on the Family president in 2003 and as chairman of the board in February. Read rest of story here: http://www.usatoday.com/news/religio...s-family_N.htm |
Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
"In announcing his resignation as board chairman earlier this year, Dobson said: "One of the common errors of founder-presidents is to hold to the reins of leadership too long, thereby preventing the next generation from being prepared for executive authority ... Though letting go is difficult after three decades of intensive labor, it is the wise thing to do."

I don't think USA today has the story right or complete. we have to hear what he says.

It doesn't sound like there was any kind of problem; he's just handing over leadership to someone else.

He discusses his winding down several months from now on the air on the second. This is for Feb 2010 I suspect the Liberal media is trying to make it's own story. |

These events are called succession planning.

So does this mean that, as a Christian, I'll now be allowed to shop at stores that say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas"? |

On the Audio, Mrs Dobson has just been sued by the atheists and is being deposed. The National day of Prayer is an enterprise she runs.

Press release
October 30, 2009 Colorado Springs, Colo. – Focus on the Family Founder and Chairman Emeritus James C. Dobson, Ph.D., will leave the ministry as its primary radio voice at the end of February, the ministry announced today. Dr. Dobson's departure from the radio program and from official affiliation with the organization he founded in 1977 is just the "third chapter in a transition that began in 2003," when Dr. Dobson stepped down as Focus president, said Jim Daly, the ministry's president and CEO. It was a mutual decision between Dr. Dobson and the ministry's board of directors, which Dr. Dobson left in February of this year, Daly added. "The Bible tells us that to everything there is a season – and Dr. Dobson's season at Focus on the Family has been remarkable," Daly said. "He has done a superlative job in modeling the graceful transition of leadership from one generation to the next. "We're excited about continuing the work he began, and following the biblical principles he's always followed, to reach today's families." Dobson, who will continue to record new radio broadcasts between now and the end of February, remains "a man of health and vigor" and will continue to make his voice heard in the public square, Daly said. "Dr. Dobson is a wordsmith, but one word I don't suspect we'll hear him using is 'retirement,' " Daly explained. He added that a series of events to honor Dr. Dobson's contributions to the ministry will be held over the next few months. "Focus on the Family has never been about one man," he added. "That's why Dr. Dobson has always refused to have his name put on any building here. It's about doing the Lord's work in helping families." Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
I haven't been able to hear his program since I moved but I always enjoyed his radio program.
I think he has been moving towards this decision for awhile now. Many churches are nearly destroyed because the pastor refused to step down until there are nearly no one left in the church. I will miss hearing his voice, but I have been missing hearing him now for awhile anyway. Did you know he had Donna ?? my mind just went blank on her last name, but she is so funny, yet she gets her point across. |

Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
I appreciate Mr. Dobson and his heart for the family, and the way he's handled his own resignation. His letter is well-written and thoughtful. I especially liked how he said he realized he was unwittingly hindering the ministry by staying on. Right now I'm attending a church were the pastor refuses to step down - and he is much older than James Dobson is - he has overstayed and is causing damage to the church. I think that Dobson has been wise to realize that and take steps to retire before damage can be done.

Somehow, I don't think that would be the proper way to handle the situation. :)
Over the years he's manipulated the church and church board to a place that they will not cross him - in anything. He is the final authority. It's a very hard, sad situation. |

But I have to ask the question I would ask anyone in your described situation. Why are you still there? |
Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
Very good question. The answer? Nowhere else to go.
|
Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
That is usually the most common (and accurate) answer. Been there.

Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
I have witnessed that situation in several places...very sad...
|
Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
And sadly tho, not a good reason to stay in some ways. I will be praying for your situation 1992...

Re: Evangelist Dobson parts with Focus on the Fami
I haven't been a fan of Dobson for a long time. I liked him when I was younger, his parenting stuff seemed good back then, but he just got progressively more political and that really turned me off.
I just think that a lot of this stuff; who to boycott, where to shop, who to vote for, is overstepping. I don't like people telling me how to feel or react, just give me the information and let me do with it what I think is appropriate. The militant stuff rubs me the wrong way. :nah |
