Pit Bull vs. Porcupine

2 Attachment(s)
A pit bull was in his backyard in southern California , minding his own business ... until this porcupine invaded his territory. The brave (but not very smart) pit bull immediately challenged the porcupine. Bad decision! The porcupine won this short contest.

A vet sedated the dog, and then removed a total of 1,347 quills. The dog survived.

Sometimes defense is the greatest offense.

There is a saying that relates to my family coat of arms, and the hedgehog emblem on its shield: "The cunning fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing!"

Having seen what pitbulls can do to babies - I think the porcupine made a wise choice!

My daughter has a pit bull.

If they are pure bred and you take time with them while they are puppies, you won't have a problem with them. The mixed breeds are the danger.

I hate pitbulls with a passion. Our next door neighbor has an evil pitbull that will continously growl at you the whole time you are in the back yard. If you are so much as 4 feet away from the fence, he will try to jump over the fence. He is so big he probably could get over it, he just hasn't figured this out yet. I was out there one night, and he was trying to dig under the fence to get to my son!!!!! It's sad that I can't let Kristian enjoy his own back yard.
We can't even buy our son a puppy cause the pit would kill it.

One of these days I'm gonna buy a pound of chocolate..........

 I am not fond of pits, but I wouldn't wish this on any animal. That is unless it was coming after me. In that case I would consider it a divine intervention.

Re: Pit Bull vs. Porcupine

That has to be the dumbest dog ever, not the breed just that dog. We used to live in an area that had a lot of porcupines and our dogs would get into them now and then. Usually 10 or 15 barbs in the face was enough to convince them to move on. That dog had a hard time figuring out he couldn't win that battle.

I have a pit who doesn't know she is a dog. She is a 100 pound baby who sleeps in the bed with me and my hubby!!

I can't stand dogs in general and pit bulls and rotwielers in particular, but I wouldn't wish that on any animal. Those quill pictures are worse than the time My mom's dog lost a fight with a huge rattlesnake.

Personally, I think that the greater potential that the pit bull has to be a killer should keep them from being a domesticated animal. I hear all the arguments about how they are raised, but dogs of all breeds are raised improperly yet we do not see them be as lethal as the pit bull. My own personal take is that I would let the owner of any pit bull in my neighborhood know that if it attacked my child, I'll be coming after them (the owner).

Seems that pit bull would not have had near as many quills as souvenirs had it not been wanting a major piece of that porcupine. There's your Guiness Book for ear, eye, nose, lip and tongue piercings. :)

When a porcupine throws its quills like that, does it regrow new ones? I've often wondered that.

And I have to wonder if that pitbull got so many quills BECAUSE it is the nature of a pitbull not to let go once it begins an attack? I've always heard that if a pitbull starts to attack someone or something, its jaws will LOCK, making it unable to let go.

Re: Pit Bull vs. Porcupine

New quills grow to replace lost ones. They love salt. And - I suppose - salty dogs (lol).

A man was walking into a Walmart when a guy shouts from a distance while catching up to him, "Hey Mister, is that your pit bull in that black truck."

"Yeah, why?"

"I'm really sorry to tell you, but my dog just killed your dog."

Angry, the man asks, "What kind of dog you got that can kill my pit bull?"

"A chihuahua!"

Taken back, he asks, "Mind telling me how your chihuahua killed my dog?"

"He got stuck in his throat!"

Pits and mixes can all have good temperments. They are prediposed to be great with people - particularly kids. The danger is taking into account what they are capable of when handled by idiots.

My issue is that idiots buy all breeds of dog, yet the pit bull continues to be an issue when it comes to fatal attacks. When the margin for error becomes so small and the potential for fatal attacks becomes so great, you are not dealing with a true domesticated breed. IMHO

Actually, I think the idiots gravitate toward pitbulls because of their reputation. Thus perpetuating the cycle. I do agree that pitbulls are much more capable of damage than most breeds, so I understand your position. I actually like them, but would think twice about having one.

I'm telling you (and this might sound crass and un-Christlike to some), but I would make it abundantly clear to anyone who has a pit bull around me that in the event that that dog attacks my son, shooting the dog is a given...I would most likely shoot the owner as well. I think it is a travesty that people are allowed to bring that potential for fatal attacks into countless neighborhoods and not be held accountable to the degree they should.

Re: Pit Bull vs. Porcupine

Dr. Brady Barr measured the bite force of a pit, a German Shepherd and a Rottweiler. The pit bull came in LAST. The Rott had the strongest bite followed by the GSD. What makes Pit Bulls potentially dangerous is their fight drive, not their jaws. They were bred to fight other dogs to the death, and they are most dangerous to other dogs. A German Shepherd(I own one-my beloved "Cassius") can be trained to attack a human more readily than a pit, but they also respond better to the command to stop attacking. Once a pit gets started, they go into gladiator mode, and they're hard to stop(probably why this one took so many quills). Having said all that, has anyone ever seen "The Dog Whisperer" and the pit bulls he has that act like precious little lapdogs? Training by the right person trumps breed related agression, period.

Yeah, that's called animal cruelty and there is a room without a view and an orange jumpsuit that would fit those people quite nicely.
