Word is part of Microsoft Office so no, it does not come with it. However it SHOULD come with Wordpad in the accessories group.

Neither have I.

It kinda makes you wonder about people who claim it as a major problem with Windows.

There are some major differences between the Windows and MAC platform (obviously) which are brought about by huge differences in design philosphy. For one thing, Windows IS more vulnerable to malware/viruses/trojans for a couple of big reasons: One, Windows doesn't force the user to compute the "Bill Gates Way" the same that Apple does. With Apple it is "Steve Jobs way or the highway" nor do they have as stringent of requirements on 3rd party app developers. The second big issue/difference is that Windows has attempted to maintain compatibility from one version to another for years and years whereas Mac breaks comparability with almost every major release of the Mac OS.
In some ways the two mirror politics and freedom. With freedom comes more responsibility and a bit more turmoil from the lack thereof.

It really kind of depends on what you use them for. I used to get the BSD too frequently while doing heavy video or design work. I don't have that problem with my Mac. I can do multiple things at the same time and not have a problem at all. In window, it was pretty much one heavy thing at a time. Not all have my experience, but that is what I found and I was a Windows die hard for decades. Mac works for me seamlessly when Windows wouldn't.

If it has been several years since you did video editing on a Windows machine, you were probably using Pinnacle software which was horrendous for crashing. Remember it is usually (nearly always) the application that crashes, not Windows. Applications and bad drivers. Starting with Vista 64 bit, MS started requiring all drivers to be signed which has really brought a level of stability that has never existed before.

I used to be all Mac. Generally use Windows now. Macs crash too - trust me. Ya'lls been watching too many (very well done) Apple commercials. Just try to deal with FireWire and Final Cut for a while. Sometimes it won't "just work". :lol

Randy, I'm curious. What do you use for video editing? I'm definitely NOT a fan of Pinnacle. Nor of Roxio. Right now I'm using ProShow Producer by Photodex and having great luck with it. It's very user friendly but still has enough different things you can do with it to keep things interesting.

Also, can anyone tell me this: if I am running Windows XP and things are working fine, is there any advantage to switching over to Windows 7?

Been a Mac man for less than 2 yrs. Used Sony for video editing and Adobe on the PC. Now use Final Cut without any problems. I don't use FireWire, I use USB 2.0 for video transfer because the cam doesn't have FW. I do FAR more with my Mac than I did with my Windows machine and I don't have near the problems nor do I spend hours on the phone with tech support Microsoft blaming the software vendor and the vendor blaming Microsoft......literally scores of hours on the phone over the years. With my Mac, I just git r done! NEVER thought I'd be one of "those" but alas, I have left the Pacific Northwest for Cupertino! LOL

I was using Adobe premier quite a bit. There is a bit of a learning curve but once you get the hang of it it has all the power and features needed for anything short of a major Hollywood production and even then, it is probably sufficient.

We have nearly a hundred Macs at the school I am the IT guy for. Trust me. They DO crash and have major issues.

If XP is working and you have the applications you need, then there is nothing to fix (just make sure you keep up with the latest updates).

But Windows 7 really is nice. It's ability to detect and (correctly) install the right drivers is working the way it should have when XP first hit the streets.

Thank you, Randy. I appreciate that input. XP does work fine for me with the exception occasionally of a glitch in ProShow Producer. But that's only occasionally. It'll shut things down with no warning at all. Not the whole computer. Just that particular program. Geesh! But other than that, I have no complaints. So I suppose I'll leave well enough alone. Boy, I hate to say that cuz I LOVE to try the new things as they come out. Strange, eh?

that "third party" issue is probably also why there were so many BSDs....especially when it came to drivers
