Fat Burners
Has anyone here tried fat burners like Xenadrine, or Lipozene? Are they effective as advertised?
Firstly, let me state that I'm not looking for a "magic pill" that will make me lose weight. I know what it takes. I was at 257#, and after lots of hard work and eating discipline I'm now 195#, but I want to get down to around 155#, my height is 5'8" and I'm 47 yrs old. This is what I do- Tue,Thur,Sat I do upper body weight resistance training and 30 min on exercise bike. Mon,Wed,Fri,Sat I do the exercise bike for an hour. Everyday I do "crunch twists" for my abs. I consume around 1500 calories a day. I went from a 42 waist, now I'm at 35. But I can't seem to lose my gut and "spare tire", at least not as fast as I would like to! I don't think I'm burning off muscle mass because I take protein supplements.I also limit my carbs to less than 150. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm not looking to be freakishly musclebound, but wouldn't mind being a little "ripped".:thumbsup :doggyrun |

The part you are at is what takes the most time. Getting the 6 pack visible. IMO, 1500 sounds a shade low for what you are doing, I'd be surprised if youre not burning a little muscle, whether you are taking in protein or not. Its good that youre doing resistance training with the cardio:thumbsup Are you calipering your bodyfat (weekly/biweekly)? I feel that is the best way to tell your progress. I have been running 3-5 miles almost daily, and do weight training as well. I have been working toward the ripped abs myself for the last few months(since June), and theyre coming slowly. I'll be slowing down the cardio at the end of December, and hitting the weights harder from theron, to pack on some muscle hopefully. (Im on a 2300-2500 calorie diet)I ve been losing a little fat every week but my weight has stayed the same for almost 2 months now. Yet the calipers show me losing fat in the stomach area, so I know Im making progress, it just takes time. There only about $6 if you dont have them. I havent tried the fatburners, so I dont have any input there. Sorta scared of 'm. Lots of water:thumbsup |
Re: Fat Burners
Fat burners can trigger anxiety and clinical depression in some folks.
I know this from personal experience. If you can avoid fat burners, please avoid them. |
Re: Fat Burners
I used Stacker 2 a couple times back when they had ephedra in them. They seemed to work well then. I could feel the burn and they actually kinda gave me jitters from all the energy. Now they don't have the ephedra and they do nothign for me.
I try to just do eliptical machine set on the Fat Burner setting and then do weight lifting. I don't aim to max out, just build up some healthy muscle. The muscle will help you burn more cals. I don't know of any magic pill honestly. IN High School I set a record for sit-ups in 15 minutes time. I did over 500. I still didn't have "ripped" abs. I couldn't shed enough of the belly to show the 6 pack. I aim to be healthy, not look like Matthew McConaughey. |
Re: Fat Burners
All the old fat burners with Ephedrine worked really well but I don't know if that is around anymore. Honestly, I would stay away. My wife has tried them all and they put her in a bad mood and she doesn't really lose much weight anyway. Lifting heavy weights and eating healthy has helped her lose all of her after baby fat.
I agree with shag, I don't think you are eating enough calories. Additionally, you should be eating breakfast, shacks, and lunch to properly fuel your metabolism. I noticed that you didn't mention doing weights with your lower body. You don't want to miss out on weight training the largest muscles in your body. |

1500 calories a day is good for someone who is trying to lose weight. It just depends where you're getting those calories from and when you're eating them. Another thing you may want to try is riding your bike to work. If you can work more aerobic exercise into your lifestyle, you'll see more progress. Just don't let up on your protein and weight lifting regiment. |
Re: Fat Burners
I am 5' 11" and weigh 189. I would love to be able to keep my muscle mass and get to around 178. It is so hard. Just two months ago I was visibly "fatter" and was 181 but as soon as I started back lifting I was up to 194 almost overnight yet am almost a pants size smaller and have less fat visibly. Now I am trying to lose the fat but keep the muscle but it is slow go. Maybe a pound a week if I am lucky.
It doesn't sound like you are that overweight to me. |
Re: Fat Burners
fat burners-HA- what a waste of money. I get better results with coffee and green tea.

Re: Fat Burners
I've never tried fat burners. But I did loose 70 pounds while on the South Beach diet. A year and a half later I've gained 18 of it back though. lol
I have to get back into it. :) |

I have tried the some fat burners before. They helped me get started on my losing 70 lbs. I used Hydroxycut, but not to the exact directions. I used a lesser dosage because I didn't want to over do it. There are some good ones out there. I read what your goals are so I would take either Atro-Phex by BSN or Spirodex by Gaspari Nutrition. All of Gaspari's things have independent studies done on them and if you read those they can give great insight. I would also recommend do up the intensity of the cardio some. I don't run much because it really jars my back, but I am trying to get it better. I acutally do the elliptical machine and I do it rather hi-intensity. I do 1 hour at generally 50-60 rpms or 3-4 mph if I am doing the "manual" setting. I like the intervals or the mountains because it helps tone the legs not just burn calories. Now keep in mind it takes burning roughly 3,500 to equal 1 pound of fat. The key is to do things that keep the body burning calories while you are sleeping, eating, etc. Basicically you want it to burn while you are not working out. Swimming is also a great thing to do. ManofWord is a great person to ask because of all the high-intensity stuff he does for his races. I always try and push myself to go farther and harder, but make sure that you do it wisely or else you be like me now. I haven't really lifted in 3 months because of shoulder issues. I haven't lost muscle mass because of protein intake and light lifting. I am sure that you are eating well too, but shocking the system isn't bad. You could eat raw like veggies and stuff for a month and the body fat will drop and you can slowly add some dairy and or lean meats like fish back. I am recently a vegetarian, my wife and I. I continue to drop weight. I feel great and take vitamins too. I do eat some dairy and fish, but mainly just a plant based diet. The other day we went to Paradise Bakery and order their Vegetarian Sandwich and Tomato Soup. After we ordered the Manager told me that the soup has a chicken stock base. I took maybe 3 bites and it tasted gross (it used to be my favorite) and I was literally sick the rest of the day. Good Luck! |

If you can swim and swim well it could be a huge benefit. Obviously it tones your arms and legs, but it is also a great core work out. Also Plyometrics really work, P90X is pretty much Plyometrics. But swimming is great. Look at ManofWord below. He is in Triathlon shape so take it with a grain of salt, but I am envious. http://www.apostolicfriendsforum.com...iathlon&page=3 |
