Watched Avatar last night. Midnight show, 4-story screen, 3D.

Unbelievable.

James Cameron isn't much known for his dialog or characters, but the technical achievements and attention to detail made that barely noticeable, and the 3D characters really came to life. He certainly raised the bar with this one.

3 hour movie. I went by myself and was barely able to get ONE seat 30 minutes before the thing started.

do you have to wear 3d glasses to watch the 3d version? does the theatre sell them? planning on going sunday.

Did you experience any nausea? I've heard some who watched the 3D version had trouble watching it because of nausea and dizzyness.

I am also interested in knowing about needing/not needing 3-D glasses. I have never been to a 3-D movie before.

Am planning on seeing it tomorrow night. Wife doesn't know it yet, is she in for a surprise. Will probably have to bribe her with $10 movie nachos, she loves those.

I get new bionics the first week of January - holding off on anything theater related until then.

Dunno if I could stand to sit there like a nerd wearing 3D glasses. It's hard enough to sit still as it is.

At our cinema there is a 3-D showing and a non-3-D showing. Our cinema charges $10 extra for the 3-D movie and the glasses are included in that.

I wonder if the movie experience is worth the $10?

Re: Avatar

3D movies I've been to before have been worth the extra amount...especially it it's in an IMAX.

Hopefully I'll be able to go before it leaves the IMAX 3D here. Maybe next month sometime.

Re: Avatar

Yes, they supply glasses, but like Renda said, it makes the ticket price go up. But, honestly, you have to see it in 3D. James Cameron is the one responsible for pushing 3D capabilities into theatres just for this movie. My ticket was $14 and included the glasses. That was on a massive DLP screen in Plano, TX.

And it's not the old school glasses, they look like this:

And the thing is, any prior use of 3D has been mediocre in comparison. There are times that you feel completely immersed in the environment.

It has good reviews but not my style of movie.

My son (not the best money manager) recently looked for a part time job to help pay bills. He found one at a local theater. Now I can know in advance if it's worth my time. :jolly

He has a fulltime job (same company 8 yrs) so-------now he can pay his bills and not have time to accumulate more.:bargain

Oh, that. I thought you were announcing your new avatar (small "a"). Which is awesome, BTW. Lots better than your old one! :toofunny

Did anyone see it? I saw it last night. Wow! What they can do with CG now adays.

The actors are real though. They aren't just doing voice overs to "cartoons". They did the entire acting wearing body suits with sensers, while doing the dialog, stunts and facial movements. The mouth moving on the characters? That was really the actors.

What really impressed me was the entire planet. The Trees, grass, leaves falling etc etc..all CG

Oh and it was done in 3D

So did the theater (otherwise known as a "movie house" to those UC's out there) look like this?

Yes...it was kinda funny after the movie to see people walking out with those dumb things still on their heads. Honestly I think I can do without the effect just because I hate wearing those dumb glasses plus also they tend to "dim" whatever you are looking at

3D was interesting, but sort of a novelty I guess. At times it looks as though an object is floating about 1 foot from your face

Re: Avatar

I have seen quite a few 3D movies over the years. The first ever was Jaws 3D, mainly because we were actually at Sea World when they were filming it in the early 80's.

There is definitely a WOW! moment when the film starts, but after a half an hour or so you wish the movie had been made in 2D and could be enjoyed without the glasses (and yes, full brightness).

And in my humble opinion THIS film was the high point of 3D. They should have just stopped after this one.

And even has smoking, (according to the PG-13 rating guide)

Smoking hot babes digitized and morphed beyond all human recognition?

A guy at work said that it was a SciFi version of Dancing With Wolves, only the guy joins a society of blue people instead of Native Americans like Costner did. He called it "Dancing With Smurfs."

Amazing movie, the only other movie that sucked me in like that was the first Matrix (2 &3 bleah).

Its a must see.

Went to see this last night. I have to say, we were VERY impressed!

Just an all-around GREAT movie. Never a slow/dull moment. Good character development. Believable action. :winkgrin

And of course, incredible graphics.

We didn't see the 3-D version (3-D vision/glasses really bothers my eyes) & I don't think we missed out on anything. It seemed just as great as what everybody else has been saying about it. :D

CUDOS to James Cameron for another GREAT movie! :thumbsup

Watched it on Saturday, got very dizzy and VERY nauseated. I had to leave one time to collect myself. If I felt I was going to get sick after that I just put my head back and listened to the movie!
