Thanks, it was pretty exciting! She kind of thought that it might happen while he was over here for Christmas, but she was TOTALLY not expecting it then! She had to work on Sat. and then they went shopping for a little bit, and then went to get foot massages together.

After that they went by my parent to pick up a few things, (he is staying with my parents) and then they were going to come to our house and play with the Wii for a while. Instead, he led her out to the back yard, where earlier he had set up a ton of candles and flowers under the gazebo, and sat her down and began to play "their" song on the guitar and sing to her. He had written an extra verse, which included the proposal! She flipped out! The ring is BEAUTIFUL!!

The funniest part, she was so concerned because my parents were leaving (as planned) when they got there, and she said, "well maybe I should leave" (because they were going to be at the house alone for a little bit.) That is one of the "rules", and she didn't want to be there alone, lol! My mom was so flustered, she didn't know what to say, so she said "well, it's ok, it's just for a little bit, nobody will know!!!!" LOL!!!! Lana was SHOCKED! LOL!

How sweet of him!!! When's the wedding date?

My son informed me yesterday that he will NOT be marrying his girlfriend of three years - ever! "Don't even go there, mother. I am NEVER going to marry her." :toofunny I'm glad he finally made up his mind. He wasn't saying that last week. :toofunny

The wedding is still quite a while from now, they are planning on the fall of 2011, no date yet. She has to complete her bachelors here to be able to continue her education there, and that has always been my requirement, she has to have at least a 4 year degree before I will sign off on a marriage.

Of course, they are old enough to do what ever they want, but I am very blessed to have a loving daughter who wants my approval! They have both taken their time with school, which I think is great, you don't get to be kid for long enough! I feel bad for him though, he has a four year Bible college degree that is pretty much worthless, so he has had to basically start over with his schooling.

Yes, they approve, apart from the Sweden issue. I don't think that they will ever be quite OK with that, but it is after all her life! I had to make my peace with it... of course I am also actively looking into all my options for eventually moving there. ;-) I am not going to spend the rest of my life on the other side of the world from my only child and eventual grandchildren! No way!

It's time to learn the language!

Since you have your own thread now, we need to know how they met!

They met while he was over here going to Bible college, he was at a youth convention, and was in the band, and she was one of the praise singers. They started dating I think about a year later, and then broke up after a year. They were apart for a little over a year I think, and then they started talking again after he went back home. It has been a long distance relationship every since, but they have stuck it out, it's the real deal!

She went over and stayed the whole summer this year, so she has a pretty good idea what she is up against as far the changes in culture and language. She loved it... which makes me happy and sad, if you understand me? The bad/good thing about the language issue is that it is very easy to be lazy about learning it because most of the people have at least a basic knowledge of English, most of them take it in school. Of course, that is British English, but close enough! So, you can get by, except for most of the signs and things of that nature are in Swedish.

Congrats! That is very exciting. I have a cousin who moved to Finland to be with her daughter and grandchildren. Her daughter went to Finland on an internship to work with a company and married a co worker. She comes home a couple of times a year to check on her mom.

Thanks Cindy! He is quite the romantic! They are very cute right now, but I think she is already starting to get sad about him leaving. He will be here until next Tues. and then they wont see each other until the spring, she will be going over for his sisters wedding.

Thanks!! How did your cousin do at first, as far as acclimating herself? Is she happy with her decision?

LOL, I think romance is great, but it is apparent from your posts that you and your wife are a great match and very happy together, and that really is what is most important! :cupidlove

You are 100% correct. WE wouldn't change a thing and neither will your daughter and son-in-law as long as they both agree on what they want to do (for a wedding) and after wards (the marriage itself).

The seniors in my school have a "wedding project" that they have to complete in the second quarter of school- and I always tell that that in real life, planning for the marriage is MUCH more important than planning for a wedding.

Ain't that the truth! Ever see all the reality-style wedding shows -like Say Yes to the Dress, Platinum Weddings, and Bridezilla? The wedding planning consumes the brides-to-be for the better part of a year. Ever wonder what they are like the day AFTER their wedding when there is nothing left to plan? I am sure it is not unlike many old Westerns where someone is seeking revenge for years and upon finally achieving yet, finds they have nothing else to live for.

Exactly, weddings are nice, but I am afraid a lot of these girls are in for a shock when they realize what they should have been worried about and focused on! My daughter and I have already made a pact, we are not going to get crazy about this whole thing, and we are not going to let anyone else make us crazy over it. There are a few crucial details, and then we are just not going to sweat the small stuff.

Re: My Daughter is Engaged!!!

They have already started getting pre-marital advice on reading materials from our pastor, and the wedding is not going to be for another year and a half! I'm proud of them!

She went over and visited several times and stayed a couple of months at a time. Then she moved over- She is very happy, but she had lived in CT. prior to moving so the cold winters were not a problem.
