Facebook Newbie

Talk about confused!!!! I wanted on Facebook to keep up with my cousin's son who is finishing 4 years of treatment for leukemia. God has touched them and brought them through so many trials. He's having a "No Mo Chemo" party in January. Navigating thru facebook has been a real learning experience for me!! any advice? (other than don't post anything too personal?)

Sure,
You can be my friend http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref...n2?ref=profile :D

And Farmtown is way better than farmville.

That is about it.

What is that all about, anyway?

They are games where you plant crops, raise animals grow your farm. At first I figured it would be boring but it is actually kind of fun.

Go to the Applications button on the lower left of your browser, click "browse Applications and type in FarmTown in the searchbox in the upper left.

think I'll wait on the games 'til I learn how to "navigate" - thanks for the info!

The farming games (and fish tank games, and mafia games, and etc.) are awesome ways to waste enormous amounts of time! :toofunny

(I don't do them, but my wife does. I have other ways of wasting time. :heeheehee)

I've never spent enough time on FB to really understand it. Is there a way to adjust settings so people can look me up by my user name (missourimary) but never see or be able to search me out by my real name?

Farmville is better, and more fun.

You mean people on this board, or people in general? :D

The premise of Facebook is that you use your real name. Unlike the way MySpace started, it's the real name thing that makes it work. And unlike Myspace - by default, people that aren't your friend can't see hardly any of your personal details.

It's a good system, because people can usually just see enough about you to know whether they know your or not, then if (and only if) you approve them as a friend, they can see more. I always advise women to use "First Maiden Last" name configuration (if married, obviously) because it makes it easier for old friends to reach out and find you.

There are some caveats. If you join a Network, sometimes that opens up your profile a bit more. For instance, when you sign up, you will likely be asked what city you are in -- then you are encouraged to become part of that network. It's not bad to do that, but you will want to adjust your privacy settings to limit viewing by people your don't know.

I will try to find some links to tips on how to configure your privacy settings. But, by default, you are pretty safe (unless things have changed since I signed up).

It really is cool. I just found a childhood friend that moved away from my neighborhood when we were both 7 years old. Hadn't seen or spoken to her since that time. Plus, I have reconnected with tons of people I never expected to see again. I dig it.

Here is a link that might help.

Re: Facebook Newbie

Most people I know would know me by my user name. If the privacy settings work the way that the link seems to show, I might be able to work it out. There are a handful of people that I don't want running "searches" and discovering my use of FB. Some of my "friends" have run searches of people on FB and hurt them by twisting what they found.

That's why I won't use my real name anywhere on the net, other than one personal e-mail account.

Mary,
Settings is next to your User Name.
When you hit that with your mouse a menu will drop down.
Select Privacy Settings
Select Profile Information - Here you can choose "Only Friends" or "Only Me" for the various options. I have both (Only Friends and Only Me) selected for the various options in this area.

Also under Privacy Settings, you can select "Block List". Type in anyone's name that you don't want to ever be in your life on Facebook. :D

I'm on Facebook my self, befriend me if you like,I usually turn down the game requests, and I have gotten several of them, one reason I don't know how to play them.
I do enjoy using the chat thing though.

Re: Facebook Newbie

You can set your privacy settings so no one can find you, even if you use your real name.

Also, I don't recommend using the applications, because I've heard multiple stories of people getting viruses from them.

Great advice - beginning to get the hang of it a little better - how can I change my name to include maiden?

My advice: If you're a really private person, you shouldn't be on facebook. It's for transparency and not caring if people (including strangers) know [nearly] everything about you. :D

Can't quite remember where you change initial settings, but under profile there should be a place to add a middle name. Most people just put it there.

I tend to agree with this. But if you're careful, you can limit information to friends only --- assuming they don't have big mouths offline ;)

Also, just limit the amount of info you include in your profile.

At first, I thought FB was terribly confusing and I didn't have a clue what to do. But now I think it's fascinating!! I've connected with so many old friends from my childhood and Bible college and all over the place. It's awesome!

Just remember that whatever you post goes out public, unless you send a message through the inbox, or do the chatting.
