New Year - Happy or Not

An optimist stays up till midnight to bring in the new year, a pessimist stays up till midnight to make sure the old one leaves.

I am doing a little of both because 2009 just plain stunk. Praying for a better 2010.

Anyone haveing watchnight services?

What's a "watch-night" service? :lol

Re: New Uear - Happy or Not

so glad we're not "watching the night"!!! I'll be snoozing away, knowing 2009 leaves and 2010 arrives without my help!!! of course, there'll be fireworks going off to wake me and remind me!

Re: New Uear - Happy or Not

I won't be at a watchnight service. Only one other time in 19 years do I remember not having watchnight service. (The church I was in at the time didn't have watchnight service in 2000. We were told to stay home and be in prayer... after all, the world as we knew it was supposed to end.)

2009 was unique for me, but tomorrow is only a day from today. My great grandmother believed that whatever you do on Jan 1 you will do all year. That's never worked for me. Still, I think I'll sleep the new year in! :D Or maybe I could manipulate the old wives tale... I could just log onto AFF at midnight!

Re: New Uear - Happy or Not

All NEW YEARS are happy for me when I fondly remember the most special
one of going from 1999 to 2000 the night that my two youngest sons whom
were in late teens then, remarking at our New Years Eve night gathering/service that "there is no better place to be than here in church for New Years"....
AND that night my mid son whom is now 28, rec'd the Holy Ghost!!!

AWESOME AWESOME night that was!! I will NEVER forget it, he had been baptized like oh, about 4-5 mo. prior and THAT was a most exciting spiritual baptism fest I can remember my son is truly annointed and has since come
into his own in wondrous spiritual ways., it almost just comes to me that
I had named him Matthew when he was born, as a name outta the Bible not even knowing then that it means "gift from GOD".

It just came to me that when he said what I quoted above, within an hour or so, he had the VISIT of visits!! Woohoo!

And so our church has always had the midnight gathering each one I remember being sooo marvelous! It truly IS the best way to ring in the New Year right! ;)
Our church family all together praising and giving Thanks to our KING!!

I KNOW without a doubt that 2010 is going to be a year that GOD fulfills
many promises (and then some) for me and my family! HE is so good!

NO! That's a time to spend with family, IMO. We don't have to do church on every holiday. JMO!

Y is there a U in Uear?

I'll miss having watchnight services. There have been some very good ones, a few bad ones, and one very sad one in the last 19 years.

(Sad one: We were at one service when we got a call; someone on their way to the service was killed in a car accident. That one was rough.)

We are not having services tonight. And even if we were, I couldn't go. Still can't do stairs with this cast. We have a chairlift, but I don't like Cedar Point - why would I like a chairlift!! No thank you.

We're just staying home. That'll be the first time in many years that we've done that. My brother usually has a party which we go to, but he's not doing that this year. Justin is going to go with his friends to hang out at one of their houses and play video games all night. Keith is probably spending the night with one of his friends (that's where he was last night and knowing them, he'll just stay another night). So Walt and I will sit here and watch the ball drop, kiss and then go to bed. Sounds good to me.

That is so sad! Goodness!

We attended a Watchnight Service at a neighboring church. Very old and huge church - very cold inside!!! The ladies at the church we complaining about the cold water we were going to use for the footwashing part of the service. Just complaining for about twenty minutes or so! LOL!

I was a new convert and just sat there watching and listening to them.

The minute we started washing each other's feet, they all burst into tears. Hilarious!! :toofunny

Tears of repentance, or was the water cold enough to bring tears to their eyes? :heeheehee

I didn't know this, but years before I met my husband, he had taught a Sunday School class in that very room the ladies had assembled to do the footwashing. LOL!

Yes we are having a service tonight, but we are ending it way before 12m, more like 9:30. We cancelled our mid week service to have a service tonight.

We will have singing, solo's, testimonies with food and fellowship to end the evening.

I have never understood that!! I always feel like a weirdo when we do footwashing (actually they have kind of phased it out, I think) everybody is crying, and I always feel like I am cold and unfeeling because it just doesn't really move me... I started just staying away when they were going to do it. I think my actions have shown people that I am willing to serve, I don't need a ritual to prove it!

To be more correct, Biblically, shouldn't the pastor do all the washing, of everyone else's feet? :hmmm

LOL! I have to say that except for that one experience, I have always enjoyed footwashing.

For me, it is such a solemn reminder that I am a Servant to my brothers and sisters. It focuses very deeply on our humility and our call to serve.

I know we understand that to be true all the time, but that particular service has always been moving to me.

I understand that, but for me, for some reason there has always been a disconnect. I don't know why, I don't mind doing it at all, but it always winds up being so awkward. While I might say a simple prayer while doing it, my partner invariably winds up sobbing, and then I just feel dumb and inadequate. Not a great experience, I feel somehow like I have ripped them off, so I just started avoiding it!

Re: New Year - Happy or Not

I've never been to an Apostolic communion service that didn't include footwashing. I was taught (years ago) that footwashing was a sign of cleansing, getting the "dust" off since baptism. It was also taught that if you didn't participate, you were "none of his." Far cry from the newer pastor's idea that communion shouldn't be served because it isn't safe... if you eat "unworthily" you may die! (I'm not there anymore, BTW.)

I think these are both extremes, but I still miss footwashing... and communion.

I think some react differently. I am moved by it, but I can't say that I end up sobbing.

Some of the deepest feelings I have had are never expressed openly. Just too deep to cry, KWIM?

We have had a tremendous move of the Holy Ghost is many of the footwashing services.

Very extreme. And the "unworthily" is taken, totally, out of context. It is speaking of not remembering or honoring what Christ did on the Cross. That is what would make you "unworthy".

I don't get emotional either-and feel awkward too. I just go through the motions to get it over. Like washing dishes- Sorry if that offends anyone but I can totally relate to what De is saying here.

I'm not a big crier either. The only time I can come close to breaking down is when the pressure has been applied for so long, I can't take it anymore. That doesn't happen often, but when it does, I have a big meltdown.
