Scurvy is a disease caused by the absence of Vitamin C from the diet. Since Vitamin C is water soluble it must be replaced with regularity.

On long ocean voyages where the sailor's diet was rather limited it proved to be a real plague for a time. The British Navy found the remedy in transporting a quantity of limes and lime juice on each voyage. At a prescribed time, the crew were assembled and the ship's surgeon administered a tablespoon of lime juice to each sailor.

The cure worked and British Sailors have been known as "Limeys" ever since.

(I was thinking the natives could use detaching the tracts as a test of their faith... that way the tracts mean that much more to them once they obtain them)
