As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

I'm sure this subject has probably already been discussed on AFF. ..... “Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.” Ecclesiastes 1:10, KJV.

But, being new on AFF let me give it a try. When I was a child many of the songs that we sang didn't come across to me like they did to the adults. For instance, we sang a song which had this line in it, "In that city where the Lamb is the Light, In that city where there cometh no night. I have a mansion over there that is FREE FROM TOIL AND CARE, in that city where the Lamb is the Light."

Well, as a child I thought they were singing, ".....I have a mansion over there that is FREE FROM TOILET CARE, in that city where the Lamb is the Light."

Can you add any more to this? What did you hear?

My Mom tells of how she couldn't understand why at church they were singing "Bringing in the sheets".

As you probably know they were singing "Bringing in the Sheaves".

That'd make me want to go there!

I heard a story of a lady who thought "I am determined to hold out to the end" was "I am a turnip with a hole down through the end." She refused to sing the song because it was stupid. :D

Welllllllllll, I wouldn't take nuthin' for my jersey cow,
gotta make it to the barn somehow
tho the devil tempts me and he tries to turn me around...

And........
Temptations, hidden snares,
often take our underwear.
and our hearts are made to bleed
for each thoughtless word or deed.
and when we wonder why the test
when we try to do our best
but we'll understand it better by and by.

A friend of mine had a three-year-old son that sang "Friend of God" by Israel as

"I am afraid of God
I am afraid of God
I am afraid of God
He calls me names"

He was so bewildered when she told him the real lyrics! :heeheehee

As teens, we used to sit in church and search our Bibles during the sermon. We were looking for any passages in scripture that could be construed as "off color" or nasty. LOL. You'd be amazed at how many there are!! Especially if you are a young teen. At that stage in life, everything could be considered shady if you think about it long enough. Weren't we awful! :foottap

I wasn't a child but that song great change?

There's been a great change in me
I'm so happy I'm so free

Brought me out of darkness Into the marvelous light

I was a new Pentecostal and with all the talk about power and the Holy Ghost I thought this line was freight train not great change

One of the men at our church thought these were the lyrics to the song "Shout with a Voice of Triumph":

Shout with the boys from China,
Shout with the boys from Spain,
Shout with the boys from China,
Shout with the boys from Spain!

I guess he pictured people from all different countries gathering together to shout and praise the Lord!

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

When one of my children was VERY young, we sang one of my least liked songs in church. It was. "Get Your Mind On Jesus". The chorus was.......

PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER,
PUT BOTH FEET ON THE FLOOR.
LET THE HOLY GHOST MOVE
FROM THE PULPIT TO THE DOOR.
SOMEBODY HELP ME SING.
SOMEBODY HELP ME SHOUT.
GET YOUR MIND ON JESUS, LET’S HAVE CHURCH.

However, my little one would sing at the top of her lungs.

PUT YOUR HANDS TOGETHER
BOLT ME TO THE FLOOR
LET THE HOLY GHOST MOVE
FROM THE PULPIT TO THE DOOR.
SOMEBODY HELP ME SING.
SOMEBODY HELP ME SHOUT.
GET YOUR MIND ON JESUS, LET’S HAVE CHURCH

She could not be convinced it was anything different LOL When she was older, I reminded her of this. She said, "Well, Mama, The way people went beserk on that song it SHOULD have been BOLT ME TO THE FLOOR." :ursofunny

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

A couple classics, don't know if they are true or not.

One is about the Easter song, "Let us have a little chocolate Jesus."

The other is about a problem an animal had called, "The constipated cross eyed bear."

I also thought they were singing, "bringing in the sheep" but I did not think they were singing "bringing in the cheese."

I'll Live On.

We always said, "Olive Oil."

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

What about the song that said Praise The Lord I'll have a new body,Praise The Lord I'll have a new wife.
When I was a kid I went to a Charismatic church that sung choruses I thought they we're singing there will be glory and Holler and praises.

Therefore the redeemed of The Lord shall return out of hiding,I thought they were singing.

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

I sang Bringing in the Sheets for years.

The worst, by far, was At the Cross.
I have no idea why I sang it this way:
At the cross, at the cross where I first saw the light,
And the blessings of my heart rolled away,
It was there by faith I received my sight,
And now I am happy all the day!

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

I know a guy when he was a kid used to sing "I am a turnip with a hole out in the end" for "I am determined to hold out to the end" I die laughing everytime I've heard him tell the story.

My daughter Bekah used to make up her own lines... she obviously heard what she wanted to in church. I'll have to remember some and post later.

Re: As a child, "What did it sound like to you?"

This world is not my home
I'm just a passing thru
If heavens not my home
dear Lord what would I do
The angels pecked on me (The angels beckon me)
'till I'm an open sore (to heaven's open door)
and I can't feel at home in this world anymore!

I listen to black gospel a lot and there's a song they are playing on the radio that I still can't figure out what they are saying - - it sounds like they are saying "it's cheaper to keep her".....

We took songbooks and tried to match up two song titles to see what kind of silly sentences we could make. Sometimes we'd get a bit carried away with the laughter and our parents would look over at us with a glare that made us put the songbooks up. We knew what would happen if they heard us laughing again--and it wouldn't be pleasant.

I remember doing the same with other girls at camp. There were day services and we'd look for other entertainment.
And, yes we found some interesting scenarios ! :smack

I've GOT to find in my old keepsakes where my fiance wrote a whole love letter using titles (page numbers in the song book)! It was pretty interesting!

yes, because if you pass gas in church,

.
you have to sit in your own pew

Nah, if you have gas, run the aisles, thinking in your head:
Give me gas in my Ford, keep me trucking....

Just toot around them aisles-then no one will know who done it! :D

In the old song "Come and dine" it's supposed to be "He who fed the multitudes", but I always sang "He who fed the mustard to 'em".

I didn't grow up Apostolic-I think I missed most of the good ones!! In the church I was raised in most of the songs were slow enough that no one could miss the words, for sure!! :lol

Some people got pretty mad at me in choir-I was singing "Jesus, build a fence." Apparently, its "Jesus be a Fence." And when they corrected me I had the audacity to say my version made more sense! :tease
