Athlete Dies At The Winter Olympics

A Luger from Georgia was making a practice run at the Luge Track at Whistler this morning when he came off his sled at the 16Th turn & hit his head on a pole.

Sad.

Very sad.

Seems there are no limits to how fast they can go. But I bet they pad that pole now.

There have been complaints from athletes that the course is too fast, currently it is the fastest track in the world.

Training is suspended, (obviously) & they are meeting about this issue.
1964 Olympics were marred by a Luger & Skier were killed in training runs.

Isn't a Luger a gun? I'm confused.

VIA Email fom local radio station:

Georgian athletes vow they will compete at Olympic games and dedicate their performances to their fallen teammate Nodar Kumaritashvili, who was killed during a luge practice run this morning.

given the speed I doubt padding would help. They might need to make sure the track is right though

There is some talk of putting Plexiglas around some of the corners.

Very nice tribute to Nodar Kumaritashvili with the Georgians getting a loud standing ovation.
There was also a minute of silence for him.

I was surprised, Nudar the young athlete who died at Whistler last Friday had already went down the Luge track 30 times before!
