Italian TV suspends cat stew lover
February 17th, 2010 @ 10:50am

ROME (AP) - Italian state TV has suspended a cooking show host who shocked the nation by saying cat stew is a Tuscan delicacy he has enjoyed many times.

RAI TV confirmed on Wednesday that it had suspended Beppe Bigazzi, the 77-year-old host of a popular morning program that offers food tips and recipes in a country renowned for its cuisine.

When a young woman on the show was startled by Bigazzi saying he has eaten cat stew many times, the host defended his culinary tastes, noting Italians eat rabbit, chicken and pigeons. Horse meat also is sold in Italian shops.

His critics included Health Ministry Undersecretary Francesca Martini. She says Italian law protects pets from mistreatment and that Bignazzi's comments contradict growing public sensibility toward animals.

We have two cats.

One is about 14 years old. We inherited her when my daughter moved out of state 10 years ago. She is my wife's cat and does not have much to do with me.

The other cat kept hanging around our patio doors when it was cold and snowy. We put out food because we wondered if it had anything to eat. When we were able to get it into the house we took it to a vet and had her checked out. She was about a year old and in pretty good health so we left her there to be neutered and have her front claws removed. We brought her home and kept her in a back bedroom for a week to recover. Now for the past two weeks she has the run of the house. The older cat has not accepted her yet and some times there is hissing and growling.

The new cat runs from me but a few times she has sat near me on the couch or at the foot of my chair and let me pet her.

What qualifies as a pet? If someone owned a cow is that a pet? Some people have pet cows. If a cat is wild, can it be eaten?

I would never eat a cat, but I think this is silly to react this way.

Hey, what do you call an Italian with 2 cats in the Tuscany region? Ranchers :ursofunny

You are right in that Prax...

Out here in the west a lot of folks raise what I call scrub horses, instead of getting a good sire and mare and raising quality.

Then when they can't feed them they let them go.

Well, up to last year, there were a couple of men that were finding them, buying those horses for little to nothin, and sending them to the slaughter houses in Chicago. There they would butcher them and send the meat to FRANCE!

But... a lot of do-gooders got the brilliant idea that it was inhumane to slaughter them for food so they outlawed the practice.

Now the horses are dying because of starvation.

About a year before we moved from Wisconsin, a state senator tried passing a bill allowing cat hunting. Of course the animal rights, tofu eating, arts and croissants, ultra left wing Madison crowd had a fits like you can't imagine (or CAN imagine if you know the type).
But.... I have never been a hunter but would have picked it up right then and there had the law passed! Hermes, my Border Collie, would have done a great job herding them up and driving them within range of my shotgun.

Sam, I don't think you were supposed to get serious about this subject but since you like cats maybe you can clue me in. When we moved into this house a little cat claimed us. That was five years ago. My wife passed away nine months later and I remarried two years ago to a lady who hated cats. Now she claims my cat and the cat won't have anything to do with me.

Neither of our cats, the one we've had for 10 years or the new one have much to do with me. My daughter has 3 cats and they have nothing to do with her husband. My son and his wife have about 3 cats and they are friendly with both him and her and their 2 children. We have neighbors on the street behind us who have 2 cats and both cats are friendly with both of them.

I don't know how you figure out a cat.
They just sorta do what they want and when they want.

Re: I love cats......

I just have to tell this story. We had a Malamute (Large husky, sled dog) who was an absolute angel to kids and people. In all of my life, she was the best dog in the World. One problem; she loved cats....to death. She would kill a cat in a New York minute!

After 12 years of a very productive career of killing my neighbors pets, she had 18 notches in her belt. I always tried to warn my neighbors and friends, don't be deceived by her loving nature. Don't EVER let your cat near my lazy and docile pooch.

Well, in her 12th year she became very ill. She could hardly move or walk. We knew the time was coming for that dreaded visit to the vet. She was so tame we could leave her in the front yard with no chain or leash and she would just wag her tail and enjoy a friendly pat from people walking by. Everybody loved her.

So, my next door neighbor decides to get a cat, and we failed to inform him, don't let her get a wiff. Even in her sick condition, she might muster up the strength to go for the KILL. So there was Sheba, laying on the front lawn as usual, sleepy and and content.

We had run to town and my neighbor comes walking outside holding his cat. He walks over to give my WONDERFUL, LOVING, dog a pat. He figures, hey why not let Sheba kiss the kitty. He lays this cat right in front of her snout, and you guessed it, her JAWS of LOVE clamped in ferocity on this guys cat, in what seemed her unmerciful manner, without moving an inch. He couldn't believe it!! He was stunned! Where'd that come from???

I said sorry a million times, but under my breath I couldn't help but laugh.

A few weeks later, Sheba went to doggy Heaven with that 19th gift..........
