Guam will capsize

Just when you think you've heard it all.Now comes Senator Hank Johnson of Georgia who tells an admiral on the floor of the house that the addition of 8000 troops to guam could cause the island to capsize!! , unbelievable, i dont know how to post the link from youtube, perhaps Sam can help me :)

Re: Guam will capsize

Please bear in mind the district in Georgia he is from.

Outside the Atlanta perimeter, Georgia is a pretty solid conservative state.

I thought it had to be an April fools joke until I found out he said it back around March 25th. I saw the clip on Jay Leno's show and unless this congressman is a fantastic actor he was totally serious. Never cracked a smile or gave any indication he was kidding. Scary!

Here is the Youtube clip. It is 2:38 seconds long and the good part is close to the end.

So basically, if Guam's current population is increased by 14% or so, there is a danger of the island tipping over.

Rep. Hank Johnson (D-GA): "I wasn't suggesting that the island of Guam would literally tip over. I was using a metaphor to say that with the addition of 8,000 Marines and their dependents -- an additional 80,000 people during peak construction to the port on the tiny island with a population of 180,000 -- could be a tipping point which would adversely affect the island's fragile ecosystem and overburden its already overstressed infrastructure."

This statement is way too clever for Hank Johnson to have personally composed it. :toofunny :toofunny I give *them* points for trying, though.

Well, I don't know him personally. When I heard the statement, I felt it was metaphorical. I'd have to know more. I can't imagine a human being thinking a piece of land could capsize. I think I would need more information on this. Something isn't making sense, unless he was drunk or high. Honestly, I haven't checked into this statement at all. I just put out the surface information.

lol...wow, sounds like an aid doing spin.

So I guess maybe he doesn't know how long a mile is that he thinks sending a few thousand marines there means they are going to be trampling all over the ecosystem...including the coral reefs? :ursofunny

Ive never heard anyone refer to an island capsizing as a metaphor...and how are the addition of those marines going to affect the coral reef? Oh wait! I get it! Marines? Capsize? uh...never mind

I view the clip on Thursday. I thought he either always talks really slow or he was high or drunk. I was driving home on Thursday and listening to a Conservative radio station. When they began to make fun of him, honestly, I was skeptical and even though I didn't check into it further, I wasn't prepared to believe he could be that stupid without being high or drunk.

They said something about him having Hep C and that could make you delirious, but I wasn't sure if they were joking or not.

Has he done other stupid things of this nature? I don't know anything about him.

Here's what he has on his website.

I didn't pay close attention to what he was saying. So, what do you think is wrong with him? Seriously - sick, high, or drunk? The radio host said that they wanted him to take a drug test.

"Earlier today, we (along with a lot of other Web sites) poked fun at Rep. Hank Johnson's assertion that, were the U.S. to relocate naval personnel to Guam, "my fear is that the whole island will become so overly populated that it will tip over and capsize." Over at The Gaggle, we called it the quote of the day, noting that "Guam is 212 square miles with a population of 175,877 (2008 estimate)."

Now we've come across information that makes the statement seem a lot less funny. On MondayIn December, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ran an exclusive in which Johnson admitted to having hepatitis C. Reporter Bob Keefe writes:

The Lithonia Democrat's already-thin frame has shed 30 pounds in the past year. His speech is slower than ever, and he regularly gets lost in thought in the middle of a discussion. He is easily fatigued and often impatient and irritable ... To keep the disease in remission, Johnson is going through an experimental treatment that he said has been the worst part so far."

"Update: This article originally stated that The Atlanta Journal-Constitution article ran this Monday. In fact, it ran Monday, Dec. 7, 2009. Johnson's office informed me today that the congressman is finished with his treatments and—according to a March 12 press release—feels good, though he remains committed to raising awareness and funds for hep C prevention and treatment. We regret the error. You may now resume mocking his Guam comments."

First of all, he DID say it in that context. Secondly, if he's sick and therefore not as sharp as a proverbial tack, I'm willing to give him a break.

There was nothing "metaphorical" about his comments. He was having trouble even asking about the size of the island. I highly doubt he could have mustered up a metaphor. :coffee2

Nevermind I should have watched the clip first. I'm the dumb one for thinkin he couldn't have meant it that way. The hand gesture and body motion of something literally tipping over sold me thats what he meant.

I think anybody who actually watches the clip realizes that the explanation now given (by the Democrat party machine I am sure and not Hank himself) is bogus.

It is such an incredulous thing that I do understand people who have not watched the clip not being able to believe he was serious.

I don't know why ya tryin to play politics with it by bringing the whole Democratic party into this. If this was a Republican the same kinda excuse woulda been issued.

Lawd have mercy. :faint This is just down right embarrassing. He has got to go! To me this is bad for both Rep. and Dem. in GA. Hepatitis C causes liver disease, which can and does cause cognitive impairment. However, people without liver disease have had some cognitive impairment. I cracked up when I saw that video, but this is just down-right scary to have someone in his position, that clearly is having difficulty speaking and thinking. I can't even imagine how the Admiral felt sitting there. I wonder if there is a law about removing a person from office when they display conduct like this.

Frogperson I never said the Republican party would not do the same if they had a moron of the same caliber. I was only pointing out that the slick attempt at rationalizing his comments was obviously not from him and I indicated the most likely source. I know if I were the Democrat party I would be scrambling to put the best face on this fiasco.

hahaha. :thumbsup

I would have given ya the benefit of the doubt that you didn't mean it that way but there that accusatory tone toward the democratic party is again ;)

Not that it really matters. I'm sure I've made my share of comments about Republicans.

I think we have found one thing that Democrats and Repbulicans can agree on. Democrats take the cake for the most crazies comments ever said by a politician.

The only sad thing is that unless someone watches that clip, the explanation they gave is actually quite adaquate and makes just enough sense. Couple that with it being so hard to believe any person, let alone an elected official could say that in that way.... and not too many people are going to believe he ever meant it that way.
